what ever happened to the 4k assembly competitions... now that was a challenge... make the coolest full graphic demo in 4k compliled..;) i'm still amazed at what those guys could do with a 386/16 and a 4k program... i remember one specifically that used some vga timing tricks to double VGA resolution -- and render some really sweet 3d graphics.. (fully lighted, textured, etc) some of these things even had sound....
and another that used similar timing tricks with page swapping to get 4k colors out of EGA with some simple sinusoidal scrollers, blue ->black BG fade at the bottom..
you just dont see stuff like that anymore;)
I know it's all non-open source and non-portable to other platforms... but that wasnt the point... some even required a specific VGA card and/or sound card... and if you had 'em... DAMN! hell.. you never even see cool stuff like smooth scrolling in text mode
It's a pity that society encourages sloppy and inefficient code.. but... what can we do about it?
how about this: have your source publicly available so that you're encouraged to write code that is efficient, portable, and easily readable...
bah think of it in terms of video games... you have mario, sonic, bonk, etc... all side-scroller games.. only real difference is the graphics, target platform, maps, etc. other than that.. then engines would look almost identical.. and yet nobody in that industry has gotten in trouble for copying the idea for the game... same thing with FPS games, tile based RPG's, etc...
i'm sure of all industries, the gaming industry has the most secrets and patents...
and i'm sure there has been a lot of cross-breeding of employees between the companies...
As long as you're not violating any patents and you're not copying code or using the other guys' formal design.. I say it's fair game...
I dont have too much experience under my belt.. although a lot more than most people my age... but i've used previous experiences from other companies to implement new systems or projects on MANY occasions...
then again.. i'm no expert in law... and unfortunately.. the world seems to be run by lawyers these days... (and it has been since forever)
gullible people spawn gullible people... i used to talk to this one girl that was enthusiastic about the 'rapture' and couldnt wait to die and meet god... she was 16 then heh needless to say that i cut the relation. those types scare me... it's hard to believe that people like that are actually out there.. I honestly had no idea those types were still around till a college bio class i was in... i remember losing all faith in mankind at that point. i honestly thought that stuff was just another set of childhood stories.. like santa clause or the easter bunny.. I never did put much faith in them... despite being raised catholic.. none of those stories ever added up or made sense to me..
nice feature.. despite all the bitching... If you dont want the module, dont install it... I i never was big into the visualization stuff... one plugin that i'd cream over is something to allow xmms to use mplayer as the back-end for all media files. xmms has a nice clean interface (thanks to winamp) and mplayer plays almost every format out there (and i'm sure real support will be cleaner soon and sorenson will be added) a tad off-topic --- does anyone else have trouble playing rm files in mplayer CVS? -- It dies after about a minute and 9 seconds on all rm files.. and the sync is off HORRIBLY
There is no evidence to disprove of a flood. There are fossil records of 'misplaced' sediments from around that time. If memory serves, several other 'holy books' also mention 'great floods' The 'holy books' are sure to have some historic truths, how they were (are) interpereted is another story. Unfortunately, all these old accounts of history are very much written as interpereted, not necessarily as observed and only as observed. Also, if i remember correctly, the bible (or its precursor) was never put down in writing until a few centuries (or was it melinia (sp?)) after the first recorded events were supposed to have happened.
"Impressively large flood, yes. Catastrophic flood, I don't think so."
agreed. Obviously a bad choice of words... but then again, this stuff is usually written by 'writers' and not the people responsible for the findings;)
It claims that it's a 32 bit overflow problem - and in unices it will cause the child process to terminate. This post almost got me thinking i had to upgrade to a new version...;) If you're running on a sane OS, The bug seeme negligable.. so a few people will have to hit reload if they try to do funny stuff. (It's not easy foreseeing 'issues' with dealing with a non-open or standardized OS) isnt using a good server software on an OS that really WAS NOT made for server functions sort of like using a bandaid to cover up leporacy? (sp?)
i cant believe it! a machine more l33t looking than mine! MUST GET BUBBLE WINDOW, DO SOME CUTOUTS AND GET MULTICOLORED LIGHTING!
(i thought a blue LED, a few backlit lcd screens and a nice paint job would be sufficient!)
time to bust out some tools and get to work!
Is it just me? or is half the fun of having a pimp machine making it that way?;)
I've never really run KDE much.. and i honestly couldnt knowingly name more than a few 'KDE' programs off the top of my head, although the ones i could name are excellent pieces of software even though they may be slow on non-modern machines. (which is true with most software written these days) Either way, both KDE apps and gnome apps run in the same gui simultaneously without having either of the WM's loaded (although the libs need to be there) The only thing I see having an effect is the general theming of the widgets. It'd be nice for X to have a single widget theming setup and have all window managers/programs use that -- and let the window managers and desktop environment programs do their main job -- create the general underlying interface for running programs I love having a choice in how my interface behaves. Although i would definitely like to see all apps have a common look to 'em if i wanted them to.. regardless if they're gnome, kde, or the more classic X widget sets. (I also like having some select few programs have a totally different look -- and sawfish does an excellent job doing that under gnome)
I have the power management functions i need up and running.. I never trusted the HD shutdown thing in *any* OS..also never trusted the full sleep function on *any* os.. that includes windows which claims to be king of power management. Besides that, I have the basics like screen blanking, auto-shutoff, battery monitoring, etc on my C Series Fujitsu lifebook (Slackware 8, 2.4.18-pre9) via APM.. It works great... The problem is when you have issues with power management under windows (like i always did) you just shrug it off as a hardware incompatibility.. if people have trouble with it under linux.. then they assume something's wrong with the OS. Power management has always been problematic for me... and I've just learned to avoid certain aspects of it... regardless of OS.
I have a couple friends doing Debian packaging. I believe they'll be shipping with KDE3 on the next release...
But anyways, It's nice to see a few new things with out-of-the-box releases.
I've never really tried redhat - but I have tried Mandrake - I wasnt too thrilled about the autoconfig programs trying to tell me that the default out of the box NVidia driver is better than the one i had.. Ended up disabling all that stuff, and eventually switched back to my first distro, slackware...
I know redhat does a lot of auto-config stuff.. How well does it work?
dont most tv's have a main and secondary audio channel? and 'closed captions' ? would be nice to see that technology put to some use...
--- just a thought..
I totally agree... I've been using rox for quit a bit of time.. and it screams on my athlon 1.5 and P3 1.13
windows, nautilus, konqueror, -- all have the same problem -- laggy and non-responsive when you have tons of files in a directory.. rox just blazes through it.. my only complaint -- when a file has an executable flag - it automatically runs it -- but i'm sure there's a option somewhere to turn that off... I just havn't looked..
sure, windows XP, nautilus, etc might be an eyeful.. but... performance is what I prefer.
self healing? That's easily done with tripwire, and a local backup of known working configs (and occasional remote backups), a bunch of bash scripts, crontab, etc. I'm a fulltime student, work fulltime and also have my own web hosting business. My server pretty much takes care of itself and i collect the money. The only thing i ever do is stuff the envelopes and lick the stamps;)
It totally blew the minds of all my M$ liscence thumper co-workers when i showed them my server setups.
The Pandora's box has been opened a long time ago. I see this as an exciting new potential. It may be unpopular now, but 50 years ago, who would have had laser surgery to fix their eye sight (if the technology was available) which sane person would get full reconstructive surgery from a birth defect? How about test-tube babies? All technologies have both good and bad potentials. I don't see these new technologies as anything to be afraid of. I trust humanity as a whole to do the right thing... we all havn't died off yet...

replying to myself again.. but... just remembered... xine also plays sorenson now.. and i've heard they're working on adding it into libavcodec

maybe not but mplayer CVS plays it

It makes you as dorky as that freak whose parents bought him the calculator watch for his birthday in third grade.
... Maybe that's why i was never popular in school..
... and i doubt the Ti-85 filled with games i wrote myself helped much...
is it just me or does this sound like a super-scaled down projection TV with a higher resolution?

Are there any *useful* tasks that can be done on beowulf clusters? (besides password/encryption cracking or seti at home, fractal generation)
Is beowulf ever used for (photo-realistic) 3d rendering, weather prediction, etc?
