    Of Course.

I see the internet and P2P playing a big part in making this happen.

Naturally, all of this requires computing power on the scale of hundreds of times the power of todays fastest CPU's, but there won't be a Paradigm Shift in the GUI until we kill the Interface part.

No i'm totally not kidding, and i find it offensive that my post was modded down as a troll. I'm being completely honest here.

Perhaps i should have said that the BDE was the bane of my existence, but that my hands are tied becuause the software that i use is intimately tied to it.

While i agree that the BDE is slow to start, and a management nightmare, it doesn't change the fact that a whole horde of applications were developed to use it. Now that Borland has all but forgotten about it, us BDE users are screwed!

While it seems that Delphi, Kylix and JBuilder are going strong, Borland has all but abandoned the (seemingly) less profitable Borland Database Engine. Too bad, too since a lot of applications make use of the BDE.

I'm using such an application right now, and due to some size limits on the BDE's config file, i'm unable to use it as efficiently/effectively as possible. Borlands tech support doesn't cover the BDE, and the only newsgroup on the BDE is not monitored by Borland folks frequently enough (if at all).

While i can understand scaling back certain aspects of one of your product lines, to shift focus/userbase to newer/better products, we're talking the BDE here for Pete's sake!

    It's just frustrating.

From the initial installation to the Yast2 manager, software installation and removal is as good as i've seen in a Linux distro. While the Ximian initial installation is pretty slick - piping the page source to the shell, and the Red Carpet installer is nice too, i prefer Yast2 over both red carpet and up2date.

**News Flash** Marketing works - especially if you have a solid product like BeOS was. Do you think MicroSoft and AOL would spend the wads of cash on marketing if it didn't work? Hell I'd be willing to guess that 40% or americans think that America(n) Online is the Internet.

While it may not be the developers' job to market BeOS, they need to be more aware that marketing plays an ever-increasing role in the success of any product - including Operating Systems.

  14. under foot on Will Digital Cinema Wipe-Out Today's Movie Theaters? · · Score: 1

There's a brewing controversy in "hollywood" about who should pay for digital equipment in theaters. Theater owners say it's too expensive, and there's no guarantee that the format of digital cinema that's being projected today will still behere, even 10-15 years from now (compared to 35mm).

Film distributors say, the equipment is expensive, sure, but you only have to buy one copy of the film, and you can show it on several screens at once, and move it from screen to screen easier that you can currently.

i tend to be with the theater owners on the issue if save for the Hoyts and other conglomerates... but i think the days of the independent theaters is going, if not already gone.

I think that once a standard gets hammered out (if ever) that a large chunk of the cost will be absorbed by the distributors, since it will be tons cheaper to distribute digital films (got a DSL connection?)

Then again, i've yet to see a digitally projected film (aside from finger shadow puppets..oops wrong digital), so i have no idea where i fall in the whole analog vs. digital debate.
