I personally think that the most important factor to consider about open source especially KDE and associated programs is the fact that you can quite easily translate them.
Nokia made lots of noise advertising that their phones can display messages in Zulu.
Meanwhile, KDE and Konqueror are very quickly being translated into as many of the 11 official langauges we have here (English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Sapedi, Sesotho, Swati, Venda, Tsongo,Tswana).
I think the most important part of getting people computer-literate is getting them to be able to use the tools in their own language.
ac3 is the *standard* way to encode sound for DVDs. So if there is no open-source way to decode ac-3 then there will be no Standard DVD open source DVD player.
This is another hurdle.
So... welcome to the (other) world of non-open standards.
Ok, yes. but when the Zulus armed with spears defeated an entire 2 Battalions of the British army armed with guns one day at isandlwana - who hasn't won a war against the British?
My Posting is probably off topic but so is the one I'm replying to.
They messed up one of my orders and I complained to them and they sent me the correct item free of charge (postage included) and because it was too expensive for me to send the wrong one back (international postage is very expensive) they let me keep the original.
So at least complain to the company and let them correct the mistake or keep quiet but don't post to a public chatgroup if you aren't prepared to complain to the company itself.
Altavista finds 7 website with the word "e-pliances" on it and 11 with "e-pliance". Including one that is a whole article about the e-pliance. So, run away..now..quickly..

The good times was indeed a virus sent via email.
If you note the strictest definition of a virus (in computer terms and normal use of the word) it means something that replicates itself.
The actual email informing everyone of the virus is the virus itself and it replicates itself by preying on stupid email users.
You could argue that it creates loss in that it kills bandwidth and takes time to read/delete/etc.
"Lets not forget, the tracks on which DVD players expect to find the CSS keys and region info is also pre-burned with 0's. I have no idea how you'd get a movie on there that would actually play in a DVD player... "
Simple. Make a player that looks elsewhere or alternatively makes this stuff up. Get the user to enter what region the disk is from and the player should already know a few keys. This is assuming you are playing it on computer though.:)
I think a better analogy is more along the lines of you buying a trainset and taking it apart to see how it works.
Its yours so you can do what you want with it.
If you find out that the product has poisonous gas coming from inside it and you think consumers have a right to know about it then you are welcome to publish your findings.
The fact that the company is not happy about this is obvious and they will do everything in their power to stop you.
First one would need to learn how to 1. speak english, 2. read. 3. type. 4. learn programming. Without access to education, electricity, time and money having an internet connection is putting the horse before the cart.
If I recall correctly a company charged for a service where you'd email them and they'd print out the email and mail to someone. Not sure the point of this but I think this was in the early days of the Internet when not everyone had a connection.:)
The point is not that they have broken any rules and such. Its just that they are not adding anything at all. The point the article is making is that you may as well just get hold of Red Hat or Mandrake and not bother with LinuxOne's product.
Why did a company come out with a rip off of Red Hat that is worse than the original?
But in the book 1984 the government has the ability to change most things and theory is that they could have changed the date too. So maybe 1984 is somewhere in our future;)
"Eh, who says that OpenSource means "release something that isn't finished"? Is there someone like RMS, ESR or Bruce Perens claiming that you have to release unfinished products? I don't think so."
Actually, if you think about it thats *exactly* what Open Source is all about. The whole point of releasing the code is so someone out there can improve on it. *grin* No piece of Open Source software can be considered truely finished.
yes and all those programs used in the 1970s were not meant to last all the way into 2000 and hence are the main Y2K culprits. Program properly because you never know who is gonna do what with your program;)
His name is actually Major Boothroyd. "Q" is the name of the branch of HMSS (Her Majesty's Secret Service) that makes the gadgets and such and not actually a person. At least in the books. I guess in the movies with a character called "M" they decided to have one called "Q" as well. In the newer books they have a woman nicknamed "Q-ute" who is head of Q Branch.

I know you are joking about but Meester Taco can do what the hell he wants with his own code as it is just that - his own code.
They are not allowed to keep other people's code secret as it is just that - other people's code.

Interestingly enough, here in South Africa a great majority of the population doesn't have cars, electricity, running water, fridges etc etc.
;)
100% of the population has access to a radio.
Makes one think
I doubt it.
Remember when the PowerPC came out?
3 huge companies threw all their weight behind the chip and it was meant to herald in the new era of Risc processing. The intel chip was doomed.
That was a few years ago. What happened?
But in the book 1984 the government has the ability to change most things and theory is that they could have changed the date too. So maybe 1984 is somewhere in our future ;)
This is very off topic - I appologise but I figured that the people reading this group would be the ones ho could help me out.
I have a creative labs DVD kit (drive and dxr3 card).
Is it possible for me to make (and play) my own AC3 sound files?
er, there was a palm driven lego set on /. not so long ago... used jini technology :)

Coincidence?
...thats fine but I've patented the puntuation so *you* owe *me*. ;)
I'm sorry but please re-read your post with a perverted mind. Its rather funny. I think it was "ribbed" that did it for me.
