Katz, why are you so anti-Christian? You say in your essay that freedom is for moral man and people should be courageous to discover new things. It is through Christianity that both of these things reach their fullness. The enlightenement came about because of Christian thought, people in the middle ages began to study the world because it is God's creation and as such, is good. And because people began to observe the world, the scientific method was developed from people looking at God's creation and trying to understand it. So Christian thought began the process which resulted in the enlightenment. Also in the essay you mention the American and French revolutions as results of the enlightenement, but the American revolution included many Christians and many people who had a theistic philosophy, these people used principles derived from the Bible and from John Locke who believed in God. The American revolution was moral people with Christian principles taking a stand on right and wrong, against tyranny. The French revolution was anti-Christian and used secular ideals, everyone who has taken a European history class knows the result of that revolution.
I don't care enough about Apple and it's software to read the whole license myself, but my_trust(RMS) > my_trust(BP) + my_trust(ESR)--and since even those two luminaries *cough* disagree, I'm taking away a belief in the non-free-ness of the APSL.
Which is not necessarily bad. They are doing what they want to do which is fine. Just don't try to convince me they are trying to further the altruistic goals of the FSF.
Ive been searching the whole month for any X11 server that has support for S3 Trio3D. I hope this one would work. Is this a time-limited beta release, I hope not. I have tried Xi Graphics demo (at http://www.xig.com) and it worked fine with my card but its only 10-minute demo per session and expires on April 1,1999. Sigh.:(
Yeah, I guess this is pretty cool stuff. It's about time though. I wouldn't even consider a PDA until it has FULL network connectivity... otherwise what's the point?
Personally, I'll pass on all this proprietary crap. The sub-notes are getting smaller, the palmtops aren't getting THAT much better. Surely it won't be more than a few years before somebody comes up with a PC-compatible palmtop. That's right, a real PC the size of a palmtop. I want a real processor, real RAM, BIOS, hard drive (maybe solid state, not spinning platter), ports (miniature is fine with me as long as there's a port replicator), and a keyboard and stylus. Then I'll run whatever OS on it I like.
A palmtop, be it PalmOS or CE is just an overgrown graphing calculator. I want a PC that size. Until then I'll stick with my HP48G, my Dayplanner, and my real computers. IMHO the current batch of palmtops are overpriced junk that do a poor job trying to combine all these devices. Surely somebody could make a 486 100Mhz or something the size of a palmtop, couldn't they?
You've confused the word "free" with the word "free" again! Money's got nothing to do with it. Most shareware comes with zero source code, so it's not free by the FSF standard. That's why they used the word "free" to make this clear.
I found that when combined with Oratcl, it makes a good CGI/Oracle glue language. Of course Perl can be used in the same way. I know that linking tcl against the proprietary Oracle libraries makes me more evil than Bill Gates, but hey, it pays the bills.
Red Hat's product isn't Linux, rather it is the convience of having all the parts of Linux in one place, easy to install. It's a "value added" product. The reason people pay Red Hat is that most people would rather not download and compile hundreds of packages themselves. In contrast, say your company tried to sell an easy to use Word Processor under GPL. One person can buy the word processor, give it to his friends, post the source on his web site, whatever. ALL LEGALLY! Because the GPL demands that it be freely redistributable. Most people, given the choice of paying $99.95 or legally getting it for nothing will choose the latter. Some may feel guilty and buy it. As for support, if it's an easy to use product, most people won't bother paying for that, either. If support is to be the means of making money in an all Open Source world, you are going to see some reallly awful software in terms of usability. This is why I feel GPL and commercial software can't mix for most companies.
Scriptics does not sell TCL, they are selling a development environment for TCL, so John is taking the hard work that John and Employees did and making money off of it. Anyway, If I recall correctly, IBM took that mystery project and added it to its proprietary "Websphere" product.
I've pointed this out in the past. I was amazed at the responses. It seems that the developers don't mind having other people make money off their work, and they themselves not getting a cent.
I see a troublesome trend emerging, Company releases source code, hackers fix it, company exploits loophole in its public license, and sells proprietary code based on what it got from the hackers, in essence a free labor pool!
I have looked at quite a few PDA's recently and I am really drooling over the Palm V and now the Palm VII but I am wondering why thier so expensive.
If you compare them with the machines that run Win CE and that come with 8 megs or more it seems you are getting a lot more for your buck for the Win CE machine.
Is there a specific reason why the Pilot is expensive?
1) The Linux port doesn't run. Period. I've RTFM'd every damn thing in sight and nothin'. Just "can't load library" messages. Yes, I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH or whatever it was.
2) The Mac nightly build is actually just a bunch of C header files. Where's the Mac (68k) executable?
I have to note that the two slowest things about/. are:
1) adfu.blockstackers.com is INCREDIBLY slow. I usually have to hit cancel to be able to see the page (which is fully loaded otherwise). This is unacceptable in a banner.
2) images.slashdot.org sometimes does the same thing.
AND, since I'm already on the topic of banners:
/. Feature Idea: Since I have icons turned off, I'd like be able to move the banner to right next to the page title (assuming I have to see it at all). This would give me an extra inch at the top of the window allowing an extra story.

anything competes against the xeon? whtts so good about xeon?
Posted by Nr9:
imo just the opposite cuz G4 dies are much smaller and they've got better fabs(ibm) and there will be multiple core G4s(G2K?)
Posted by Nr9:
nop, the 1 meg xeons are ppros with mmx
pIIs are lower

multiple cores not execution units

hmm, a *.edu URL, how typical. When you get out of College, and have a family to feed, your perspective will change.

How will the Unix versions be built? Are they sticking with Blotif? I thought I heard them talking about using GTK awhile ago.
