  1. Re:Play's well with penguins. on ATi Radeon 9700 Full Release Review w/ Benchmarks · · Score: 1

I can second that, I bought an AIW Radeon 7500 recently (for the realtime MPEG1/MPEG2 encoding in Windows), and in Linux using the "ati.2" drivers from the GATOS project (gatos.sf.net) with XF86 4.2.0 it works beautifully. I haven't pushed 3D too much, just played XMMS's OpenGL plugin but it works smoothly and well. TV is good except the sound chip doesn't work so I have to patch audio into the soundcard directly (no RF support either, though that might have changed recently, just Composite and SVideo work but that's all I use--I don't have TV out where I live)
3D performance in Windows is definitely good enough for me, but I don't do much gaming so my requirements aren't too high.

Overall I'm very impressed with the card, and it's definitely a worthy successor to my old ATI AIW Pro (Mach64). It even comes with a remote control, and the "ati_remote" CVS drivers work well, though I had to tweak it a bit so it doesn't repeat buttons nonstop when I quickly press them.

I think one alternative would be to switch to an amp setup, and have a 1/8" stereo to RCA cable going into the preamp inputs... I'm pretty sure the voltages coming out of a portable player could drive that, though I've heard some amps take 6V inputs, but have a switch for the 400mV inputs (anyone care to confirm?)

DMA mode with the CDROM causes some random hardware lockups, but they go away briefly. I've never had a lockup due to my HDD; then again all I have is an ATA33 and an ATA66-based HD, and the ATA66-based HD sits in standy mode a good portion of the time (it's my media/swap disk drive and this machine has 256MB RAM in it, so swapping doesn't occur too often)

I believe engines can be modified to run on pure alcohol without problems; somewhere I think I read that it requires designing engines with higher compression ratios. I think ethanol isn't really much of a problem, but methanol can become one due to corrosion. Also I read somewhere that ethanol burns hotter than gasoline, so temperature could be an issue. But I've heard of Brazilians driving on 100% ethanol, so doubtlessly they either modified regular gasoline engines or have engines built to take 100% ethanol, all engineering issues accounted for. The engines we use in the 'states are, obviously, designed and tuned to run on GASOLINE efficiently, and the 10% ethanol maximum is probably just the maximum tolerance the engine can take before combustion is hampered.

I suggested to him TridiaVNC (www.tridiavnc.com) since the latest release supports Tight encoding, so I gave him the Tridia vncviewer.exe binary and set it up on the Oracle machine. He said it was so good compared to hextile encoding that it felt almost as good as running it locally. He was on a modem, while the college is on a T1. I tried it myself from home and I must say, I was impressed. Sure, the Start menu doesn't pop up instantaneously, but it doesn't take more than 2 seconds to pop up. Considering how I'm used to running telnet over my modem line, I could tolerate it well enough. I also tried a Tight VNC session to my home computer; I was able to play Xtris well enough without trouble, minus maybe tuning the speed down a notch or two to make it more comfortable. The school-to-home session was 8-bit 640x480, the home-to-Oracle-machine session was 800x600x32bpp

Yeah, but, Sony is probably thinking that the sale of characters represents lost potential profit, because there is 1 character (and thus 1 set of monthly fees paid to Sony to create it) but 2 people involved. Sony would rather have them both create their own characters, and have twice the revenue as they would have with the character-sale situation. So, ultimately, it comes down to profit motive. Watching Sony lose this case would be an enjoyable conclusion :)
