  2. Wrong- Linux community betrayed Corel on Red Hat Breaks Even, Beats Street Estimate · · Score: 3
How can you say that Corel betrayed the Linux community? They didn't have to come out with their OS or their apps or release their work on WINE or contribute printing code or anything else that they've done.

It seems ever since Corel committed their GPL violation about a year back (quickly corrected btw), the linux community has had nothing but scorn for Corel. Slashdot is full of comments trashing Corel and Corel Linux or Corel's CEO or what have you.

I'm reminded of the stories in recent days about Mac OS X bringing UNIX to the masses. Well, a year and a half ago, Corel Linux was an honest attempt to bring Linux to the masses. But by not supporting, and worse, openly bashing the effort, I think the Linux community shot itself in the foot.

So how can you blame Corel for scaling way back on Linux? If their help is not appreciated, why should they bother wasting their time?

I'm in a job right now programming Wince devices for deployment in a large corporation. As a Palm user, it's hard to think about anything in windows ce as "trimmed down." The interface has a lot of annoying little problems:

not every application has a close button. Since wince actually splits memory into "program memory" and "storage memory" this eats up alot of ram, unless you enjoy closing the program manually with control panel or using the highly efficient and intuitive "ctrl-q" (which of course means bringing up the keyboard).

there's also no easy way to switch between open applications without using the "memory" app in control panel. This gets really annoying after awhile.

the file explorer always defaults to My Documents. This doesn't sound too bad....until you've drilled down in the hierarchy and click on an image. Hey cool, it opens in IE. Lets look at the other images in that directory... use the icons at the top of the start menu to switch back to the file explorer....and you're back at My Documents. Not fun to have to switch directories again.

I could go on. I've never used the iPaq extensively, but the Casio is slooooow compared to the feel of the Palm OS.

Regarding the development stuff...yeah the free IDE's are nice, but actually developing for wince involves alot of headaches and annoying workarounds. It's hardly a "snap."

  7. Desktop Linux. on Corel Linux - Not Quite Dead Yet · · Score: 2
The main problem corel has had with their distro (and with all their other linux stuff) is that while linux on the server is flourishing, linux on the desktop is still stalled. Corel Linux was always intended as an easy-to-use distro for the desktop to convert windows users.

However people have not begun converting in droves to linux. Corel is not in a position where it can afford to keep pouring money into this market hoping it will eventually take off. Even if it does, KDE and GNOME are getting much easier to use. So what will corel have a better chance selling: Just Another GUI Distro, or brand named applications that are recognized by people, like WordPerfect and CorelDraw? That's why their keeping the apps, and while not dumping the distro, they're not going to focus on it anymore.

Besides, if and when linux ever take off on the desktop, it's going to start in the corporate world. There, it's going to take a company that can provide integration solutions, support, the whole bit. Corel can't do that, and that's the type of company they're trying to spin off their OS in to.

Sure corel could recommend that their users use Corel Linux, but how many actually would? It's not like corel can only support their own distro, or they'd be limiting their market too much. Therefore they had to support all distros (or at least several) anyway. Which brings me back to my original point: Corel is not LinuxCare.

BTW, there's a very big difference between the support people telling customers to go into their linux control panel and actually supporting the whole linux distro themselves.

  10. Makes sense... on Corel Linux - Not Quite Dead Yet · · Score: 4
The apporach corel is taking makes sense to me. Give me an honest answer: when was the last time anybody here actually bought a linux distro? Most people who are in the know download it off the net.

People who aren't in the know might buy it, but those people want support. If you actually read the Derek Burney article and pay attention to what he is saying, corel can't become LinuxCare. They're not in the support business, they're in the application business.

So now what they're doing is spinning off the OS, maybe to someone like LinuxCare....and then they can concentrate on providing applications like WordPerfect and CorelDraw for Linux.

    What's the problem with that??

  11. Monkeybone on Laughs: Down To Earth & Monkeybone · · Score: 4
I saw Monkeybone on Friday and I enjoyed it. There were certainly some very funny scenes in this movie and it left me with a good feeling about it.

However I was reading Harry Knowles' savage review over on Ain't it Cool News and while I don't share his disdain for the movie, he claims a lot of material in the original script was cut due to budget concerns. I'm not certain how accurate that is (Knowles did have a cameo part in the film) but there do seem to be parts missing from the movie, such as explaining the people in Downtown need nightmares. That makes me wonder if those scenes were filmed then cut. It makes me wish for a director's cut.

Still I did enjoy the movie and I would recommend it. And of course no review of this movie would be complete without mentioning Kitty... DAMN!

  12. Positive co-op experiences on Getting The Most Out Of Co-Op Programs? · · Score: 3
I suppose I can add to this discussion, considering I'm currently on my third co-op education term. Living in Ottawa, I've fortunately had the ability to experience work at many different high-tech companies.

My first co-op was in grade 11 at Newbridge Networks (which is now part of Alcatel). In a way that term was like the one described by co-op-ted. I was working in an assembly plant and performing labor for free. On the other hand, the program was attached to an electronics course, and I did learn about electronics there. Plus it was basically my first job...I got alot of exposure to how the workplace actually functions which was very important.

The next year, I did another term at Nortel. This one was linked to my computer science course, and it proved very valuable for me. I was able to learn what the process of designing software in the real world was like, and they gave me the time and space to learn a new language (Perl) on my own from scratch.

Now I'm in College taking computer science, and I'm out on my third co-op term at Canada Post. (Yes actually mail can be high-tech). I'm really enjoying this experience. We're working on developing applications on PocketPCs (yeah yeah, MS, I know..) which is something not many companies have done and definitely not something I'd get to experience at school.

So I dunno, maybe my case is a little extreme, most people won't get the chance to do that many co-op work terms. However I have no doubt that they've helped me become not only a better programmer, but someone who knows how to handle the workplace. And when future employers see three companies on the resume of a guy fresh out of college, that's an impressive thing.

  13. Fibre Channel = Fire Wire on Fibre Channel For The Masses · · Score: 1

Fibre Channel is just another name for FireWire (IEEE 1394). Apple invented the technology as FireWire and continues to refer to it by that name. When an industry group (can't remember which) reviewed the technology, they decided "FireWire" sounded too dangerous, so they renamed it "Fibre Channel." Of course Sony calls it "i-Link" for some reason. The technology referred to in this article is just a faster grade of FireWire, as faster grades have been planned ever since the technology was first introduced.
