This is just an example of Steve Jobs being a little f*in baby and lashing out at anyone who tries to steal his thunder. I'm sorry Steve may have turned Apple around financially but I think he's destroying whatever good will Apple had left from the mac "faithful".
Yeah, someone did. The author of the real Liberty. Wrote a little "crack" for liberty that wiped anyone's Palm who installed it. The guy is a real asshole, don't support him or his software....
God I hope they don't try to do the Metaverse in a crappy Batman movie. uggh!
While I'm reasonably certain it will never happen, I'm still holding out for a film version of Snow Crash, where the Metaverse and a lot of other cool concepts from the book can be given full attention.
Doing the Metaverse in a batman film will just be a goofy side bit.
As someone who spent a few years getting good on VMS running on a VAX, yours was a nice post to read.
I just chuckle when I read some of these posts denigrating VMS as an operating system....it's true that VMS is not open source, but is is clear that these people have no idea of the power of the OS. 99.99 % uptime was the norm for VMS when Linux was just a gleam in Linus' eye. For true 24x7x365 continuous computing, VMS is still the OS of choice for many large operations.
VMS unfriendly? You have got to be joking right? VMS has to be the most user friendly CLI interface out there. All your comment tells me is that you never actually used it.
And, as some folks have already pointed out VAX != VMS. VMS runs on Alphas, and UNIX runs on VAXen.

I don't need or want color. With the exception of the iPAQ at $799+, every other color PDA out there has a screen that is absolutely unreadable outdoors. Why on earth would I want that? The screen on my Palm V is wonderfully sharp inside or outside.
Li Ion? I've got that now in my Palm V. Wireless? Not everyone needs or wants that, especially if I have to pay $25 bucks a month for it.
The bottom line is you can have just about everything YOU want, but you'd have to pay about $800 for it. Most people aren't willing to pay that for a PDA.
As for your single new Palm unit for customers to invest in, that's just silly. No computer/PDA/phone can be everything to all people. Different strokes for different folks, which is why Palm is making all these different units.
For those who haven't seen Kind Hearts and Coronets (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0041546), I highly recommend you rent it as part of your Alec Guiness tribute film festival.
Besides being an absolutely hilarious black comedy that plays off serial murder with English manners, Sir Alec turns in an amazing performance in which he plays eight different characters.

My feeling exactly. I guess when one's in box is flooded with people trying to be the first to submit a story, one might be tempted to just post the story to get people off your back.....

Have to agree with other posters and the reviewer. This is a great book and an easy read / primer for crypto.
The stuff on the Navajo Code Talkers was fascinating. I also really enjoyed his digression into the decipherment of Linear B...not strictly cryptography of course, but a fascinating case nonetheless.
Another interesting tidbit was the revelation that the British has in fact come up with the idea of asymmetric ciphers and the RSA scheme a few years ahead of the researchers in the US...but were unable to publish their findings. The book is littered with such stories of British discoveries that had to be kept secret for years.....
I say go get this book! You will not be disappointed.
One of the things about the way events come to a head and finish in ITF is that it's very unnerving...okay, *now* what? The ongoing conflict has become something you could count on, you knew the rough shape of what might be coming along. Now all that's kicked over, and you have to get on with the next aspect: making a new life.
What interests me, what I wanted to do with making this show, was in large measure to examine the issues and emotions and events that precede a war, precipitate a war, the effects of the war itself, the end of the war and the aftermath of the war. The war is hardware; the people are at the center of the story.
Of course, upon re-watching a lot of the episodes, I'm reminded of how much raw ass they suck. Aside from the space combat, which is one of the things that B5 has always done well, I find it excruciating to sit through most of the shows. God forbid it's a "character development" show, as opposed to some decent action.
As someone else has already pointed out, the whole point of the series was character and story arc development, not space combat scenes. But, B-5 was never for those with limited attention spans like yourself.
Incidentlally, the reason why it "took sci-fi so long" is that another network, namely TNT, already had the rights and has been showing the show for the past few years. But they relagated it to 7 am on Saturdays, so I'm glad to see Sci-fi pick it up.
Not according to JMS. His original plan was always to have the Shadow War end before the series was over. one of the main themes of the show was to show the aftermath of a war. Hence the series started ten years after the Earth-Minbari war and moved through the entire progression of the Shadow war, including dealing with the after-effects.
Already emailed him directly, but I just wanted to publicly thank Zoid for all his good work with CTF. Threewave CTF on Quake 1 was the game that made me a Quake addict. I had never experienced so much adreleline pumping excitement as I did playing CTF in those days.
I'm sorry to see Zoid moving on, but we all need new challenges in life. The CTF concept is mature enough to survive on it's own now.
id has always had a fair amount of turnover. Folks come there, cut their teeth working with Carmack, and then move on to other positions in the industry. It's not just this year.
Funny your comment about not liking Carmack after reading interviews. For me, everytime I read an interview or one of his.plans, I usually respect him more.

That is the real reason why Apple killed 'em off...they were drowning in defective keyboards.
I have not been impressed with the speed of the releases I've tried....has the speed of the app improved at all?

The buildings are about 1/2 mile to a mile apart. 10mw Output power.

We're using a 100Mbit laser right now to link our two buildings in San Francisco. Plenty of fog, never been a problem as far as connectivity.
Great technology, saves a lot of money in trenching to lay fiber. Now we're looking at a gigabit upgrade for the laser!
I think Lego Trains ARE fully operational. They are powered just like any other toy train I believe.
Yup, the Simpsons movie just won't be right without Phil doing some of the voices. No Troy, no Lionel Hutz?

God damn I miss him!
