How did this get marked as interesting? It's a basic logical fallacy. Precisely *because* they spent all their money on an iphone, they can no longer afford apps. It's the whole butter or guns argument.
The same response can be levied against one who asks how it is we can go to the moon, yet not cure the common cold.
If you're spending that much on it, you should really invest in a Pulse Tube Refrigerator. See cryomech.com. We use one. They're $40,000 up front, but they have two stages that can pull up to 1.5W @ 4.2K (or 0W @ 2.8K), and 40W @45K. They make things simpler and they pay for themselves in just a couple of years. Also, the convenience itself is just phenomenal.
I'm a very similar, yet not so special case. I was misdiagnosed as being bipolar, when really it was a mixture of ADHD and then guilt from not being able to do my homework. I dropped out of high school, got my GED, and I am now 29 and also finishing up my Ph.D. in physics. About three years ago I was finally diagnosed with ADHD after my significant other pointed out a lot of ADHD-like behaviors that I simply took as quirks. Getting here hasn't been easy, but having medication now has completely changed my life. When it comes to certain types of tasks that were easy to get distracted from, I could maybe get two to three hours of work done out of an eight hour work day. Now it's more like seven. I'm infinitely more happy and satisified with my life now, since I'm not convinced that I'm just a lazy SOB for no reason.
I still get very emotional thinking about it, and I realize that my life would be very different had I been diagnosed sooner.
I think that idea is a little naive. If a newspaper's biggest advertiser is getting poor press (or perhaps poor reviews of its products), you better bet they're going to try and flex that leverage. If they can't go to the editor, they'll go to the investors with threats of pulling their ad money. The fact that there is that fear that money will disappear is always going to be a useful bargaining tool. A little less for a non-profit, but still..
Pardon me, they may not be suicide bombers, but who exactly is it that you think is behind the murdering and intimidation of, for example, doctors who perform abortions?
Well, it's not a metal for one. Problem is it would be extremely fragile. It's entirely likely that you could brush it off the surface with your finger. Also, if you were to apply a coating, the coating itself would reflect light thus negating the sheer awesomeness.
Unbiased news reporting at its finest. Regardless of how the editors may feel about the legitimacy of intellectual property, commentary like that is without class. I'm embarassed for you, honestly.
The way we physicists refer to this situation, is by saying that biology is truly in its infancy, in that there's no real such thing yet like 'mathematical biology.' Really, one could argue there's not even a field of theoretical biology. Everything is empirical. We can't predict squat.
You are the one that is mistaken. In physics one often refers to many varying energy units. When we talk about energy in Kelvin, we are actually referring to the boltzmann factor, kT.
For T = 1E9 K, and k_boltzmann = 8.6E-5 eV/K you get 86.7keV (which is in agreement with the summary).
180 sq. ft? Really? I think my walk in closet is already like 40 sq.ft. Guess there's something to be said for a 5 minute commute. I rather like living in a 980 sq.ft. apartment for $710 a month. Does Austin count as a big city?:P
I'm not sure I feel a lot of sympathy here. I mean, that is a *huge* bill, but the situation seems completely obvious. The iphone frigging buzzes to alert you that you have new mail. Did this guy think it was magic leprechauns that were delivering that information?
Also..
1) User is an idiot and doesn't know the difference between 'off' and 'standby.' 2) There is an 'update email manually' setting, which actually I *thought* was the default behavior, though I could be wrong on that count.
I think AT&T is going to force Apple to lock this down. From what I hear (maybe I'm mistaken, I don't have one yet), the only texting available on the iPhone is SMS, and not iChat. If you were free to install AIM on your phone, there goes a large portion of AT&T's income from text messages. Again, I don't know the details of the forced AT&T plans . . . are unlimited text messages forced on you? If not then I suspect I'm right. =)
Is this something that can be patched in a forced software update?
I don't know if that's the inside joke I think it is, but I think you're way off base. The theoretical physicists we've had briefly in our lab (for requisite graduate student lab experience) couldn't handle anything more complicated than a pencil! One of them used a gallon jug of acetone to clean something the size of a quarter (exaggerating, but only slightly.)
I worked at CERN a few summers ago. The intended energy in the entire ring at one time is the kinetic energy of a semitruck at some nominal road velocity. So, there's an order of magnitude at least. The energy of a single particle I believe was the kinetic energy of a horse fly, which is still immensely impressive.
I thought this distinction is already made. By their nature, the pure sciences are geared toward thinking, and are more focused on 'why' rather than 'what can I do with this.' Coming from a physics background, this has always been the impression from our field. Engineers learn a more narrow spectrum of science with intended applications. The scientists have a broader education and are taught to think from first principles.
If you want to be a tinkerer, go into engineering.
I'd love one if you don't mind. =) junkmail at borysow dott com
I wouldn't mind an invite either, if someone has one to spare? junkmail at borysow ddot com? =)
Thanks!

Also, it needn't be overt.
Wait, it's not?

Haha. I just tend to be optimistic. Silly me! :)

Oops. I meant 7 sigma.
Umm. Yes. That's 20 sigma. That's not noise. =)

Why is this garbage even posted here? Is this site really run by idiots?
Infuriatingly stupid.
Hopefully this is more reliable than the Doctor Who drivel that was posted here yesterday or the day before.

Actually, what you said is not quite correct either. That's the center of mass collisional energy. Individual particles can reach half that, or 7 TeV.
I think these are correct.

I forgot the best part.. immediately following his statement about 20 more hands went up, and the moderator closed the floor for questions. ;)
