  1. Landmates and MADOX. on Exoskeletons for Human Performance Augmentation · · Score: 1

Interestingly enough, the Appleseed Databook notes that "true production of master-slave armor" begins in 1992, with "armored shell exoskeleton unit created" in 2029. Oddly enough, true Landmates either aren't widely produced or kept secret for a while; they're portrayed to be a recent development in the first book.

MADOX-01 was particularly interesting, postulating an armored trooper created by the JSDF and US military(in 199X no less!), to semi-replace the attack helicopter. A cheap, lightweight, extremely mobile tank-killer, armed with a small gatling gun and some assorted missiles/shaped charges. About the only thing wrong with it is the assumption made by a lot of directors that the problem of nap-of-the-earth/ground-effect flight will be solved in no time, in a human-sized form without bulky fuel tanks(same assumption in Bubblegum Crisis and Power Dolls). Still, you could use a roller-skate design, like the VOTOMS or Heavy Gears..

IIRC, the Discovery Channel did a series of articles on military/high technology and the anime series predicting them. The MADOX one is at discovery.com/area /technology/virtualtech/issue3/splash.html.

I don't mean some American PC game company's (bad) attempt to copy the style of a show that wasn't about mecha, or yet another saga in the overblown tales of pseudo-knights in slow, overheated walking tanks. I want my giant robot to be fast, somewhat airborne, and the ability to color it plaid with a smilely face on the shoulder. And have a guided-missile launcher hanging off said shoulder.

..have a good Armored Core lookalike for a PC platform.
It still amazes me that American companies who are interested in mecha games haven't taken the AC lessons to heart--insanely customizable units(switching body parts gives a very different playing style, not to mention designable logos/paint scheme), cleverly designed levels/arenas, and plot determined by the player's choice of missions. Weapons are very thought out as well.
Lately, most American mecha games haven't made me feel a thing.
MW3: admittedly, quite possibly the best Battletech game on the market. But the gameplay and feel hasn't changed for the past five years. Driving a walking tank with barely any agility and a poorly-designed cooling system doesn't appeal to me anymore. Though the graphics are stunning.

Heavy Gear 2: I'll plead guilty here; I haven't played anything beyond the demo, which did impress me in the drastic improvements from the first version. Activision's lame install program annoyed the hell out of me, though.

Slave Zero: at its roots, an Evangelion wannabe(and especially if you saw some of the early devel pictures). Enemies are nicely designed, but intelligence-wise fairly simple, except for the bosses. The shoulder missile unit was a breath of fresh air, but the handheld weapons have been done over and over again. Why can't Slave use those nifty back thrusters to scoot forward? Why don't the levels give me an impression of a real city? Don't even get me started on the Dreamcast version.

Shogo: if multiplayer works for you, you get very fast and furious dogfights. What's nice is that the duality of man/mecha modes is quite clear, and it forces you to take very different play styles. But mecha mode can still be classed as bringing nothing new; just a scaled up version.

Parting note; I've had a suspicion for a long time that Shogo and Blood 2 were seen by the Monolith higher-ups(not the programmers) as more of prototypes/stepping stones on the way to LithTech 2. Shogo got a good release(marred by some sloppy network design, which mutated into massive cheating), but then they wiffed on Blood2, and then decided "We'll just pretend they don't exist and start selling gamers on our new Wowie Zowie Engine". Sanity is still on my list of games to check out, and the new engine shots do look impressive. Hopefully 'Lith will do a bit more listening and improve their attention span.

I'd like to see someone try to 3D model or digitize an average KoF background and characters, or the graphics for Metal Slug 2/X.
And you're only talking about graphics. Sound effects and music are digital, yes, but it still takes a good amount of skill to produce audio that doesn't sound like someone making mouth noises into a cheap microphone. Those are Dreamcast VMUs, Visual Memory Units. They're much like the Playstation memory cards, except that VMUs have a small display screen and controls. You can use them like a Tamagotchi, a Game Boy, or as a private screen--they plug into the Dreamcast controller, so you effectively have a small LCD screen for information. They can also plug into each other to share save files(and can even download patch and extension files from the 'Net, for even more after-market fun).

And in an off-topic rant that probably nobody on Slashdot will read, when do I get a nickel for when Yet Another game person/reviewer/"guru" blatantly states "the Saturn never had any good games"? Penny-Arcade's done it, Gamcenter's done it, and PlanetDreamcast still has that flavor about them. Bollocks. Even though Sega of America(and especially a certain former Sega employee who's initials are BS) did their best to ignore the Saturn, there was still a massive flood of good titles--BUT NOT IN THE UNITED STATES! Thanks to SOA, great titles like Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurentai, many fighers and all the KoF ports to the Saturn(which the quickie got wrong as well, since KoF '99 Millenium Battle is hardly the first KoF title to appear on a Sega console), and a smattering of RPGs(including both versions of Lunar long before Working Designs rereleased Lunar: Silver Star Story) never appeared over here. Why? Because they felt the need to push the Saturn, which was never designed to be the 3D workhorse that the PSX is, to lousy graphical heights by employing every white trash genre ever conceived. Y'want graphical splendor on the Saturn? Look at Radiant Silvergun or Lunar: Eternal Blue. But look outside your own country once in a while.
Ah well. The tesosterone living-on-the-edge gamers will probably mark this down because they can't stand the thought of playing something that isn't an FPS or RTS. :/
