Interesting? No offense but this guy makes an off the cuff remark that isn't at all well informed on a subject he doesn't know anything about and that's interesting? Five minutes on google, guy, that's all it would take. i'm sorry if this seems harsh it's just that this is supposed to be a forum for people who have a thirst for knowledge, who want to find out how things work and yet we are faced with post after post that starts "I' don''t know much bout the subject being discussed but I'll throw in my half-assed opinion anyway" (I'm paraphrasing, obviously).
It's Mpeg2 video by the way. And how exactly would he provide cable for everyone? He could give them access to the shows on the Tivo's drive but I don't thing the 50Mhz PPC in the Tivo is going to be up to streaming more than one at a time.
Guys, uh, everyone. Could everyone gather round and take a look at what this guy posted. This is a perfect example of why it's so hard to take Slashdot seriously. Notice the unsupported, ignortant, and juvenile commentary. If only this weren't par for the course.
Why? Even if you accept the fact that a 700mhz G4 can keep pace with a 1.4ghz Athlon (I've used both, and I believe it), the iMac is STILL overpriced. What's a 1.4ghz Athlon system going for these days? I'd bet you can build one with a name brand LCD and get a DVD burner too for the $1299 the iMac costs.
This is an argument I keep hearing, about how cheap LCDs are right now. OK build the system and buy the (even brand name) LCD and I bet you'll find that it's an LCD with analog inputs as opposed to the all digital solution the iMac offers. So go ahead, sure you can build crap for less, buy hey, it's still crap.

Bear in mind that other than pretty windows with shadows, fading menus, and stretchy...uhm, things... what can MacOS X do that Linux can't? (And if you're looking for eye candy, count on the fact that X and wm hackers are going to get jealous of Quartz real quick and build something similar. Hell, the hooks for it are already in Qt.)
How about run Mac OS 9 applications stably and easily.
Well, Apple did "out source" their Unix. It's called Darwin and it is released under an open source license that has just been made even more open and filled with goodness.
This is incorrect. Spend some time on the Darwin Dev mailing list and you'll see this talked about. The BSDs have Linux binary compatibility but it has not been ported to Darwin and therefore OS X (yet). Part of the problem from what I understand is the different binary formats, Linux using ELF and Darwin/OS X using Mach-O.
I choose where over 100 million goes on desktops each year. No joke. Just a fact. I will not get a single Apple. They will fail soon and be just an other division of Compaq or Microsoft.
Dream on. I'd be surprised if you get to choose what mom is making for dinner tonight.
The comment was referring to the inability of USB to act as a networking medium. USB to ethernet adapters don't use USB as the networking medium, they use ethernet.
You're not being an idiot, it's just that this has been discussed over and over and over again. The underlying Mach/BSD layers are a open source OS called Darwin. Everything else is Apple's and it likely to stay that way. It's what distinguishes their machines from the rest of the world so they are unlikely to open it up.
Did you ever wonder why the G4 is stuck at 500 Mhz? It's not because of any inherent difficiency with the G4, just the opposite, it's beause the G4 is a more efficient chip. Because it has a short pipeline, it is very efficient but hard to scale up to higher clock rates. So to get higher performance and keep up with the percieved superiority of Intel Apple has gone MP.
Fortunately OS X is being completely optimized for SMP and G4 Altivec. That includes core Apple technologies such as Quartz, Quicktime, etc. Heck even under OS 9 the applications that really tax a processor, Photoshop, After Effects and Premier are already SMP aware.
I'm an Apple fan and OS X is going to kick butt...
BUT IBM wrote AIX, Apple wrote AU/X (Is that where the slash goes?) If you are going to post in such and obnoxious manner, check your facts first. Otherwise you come off looking like the asswipe.
please educate yourself and realize that rc5 cracking is a pure integer task. Altivec does not help the slightest little bit. rc5 cracking is also *completely* worthless as a cross platform benchmark.
Please educate yourself by heading over to distributed.net where you can find out that the macppc client is indeed AltiVec/Velocity engine accelerated. Maybe you should check your facts before posting in such a high-handed manner. OK?
Microsoft would never do this. Apple, on the other hand, has done just that. Mac OS X is based on the Mach kernel and FreeBSD. But they are realeasing the source as Darwin.
I have a serious qualm with thieving the money of artists. I have no qualm, however, with taking money from the industry that holds the artists down, that represents itself as if it were the artists themselves. I'm speaking of distributers.
Then don't buy the artists' CD at Walmart or Tower or where ever. Go to see them live and buy it from them there, then all the money goes to them. If you're talking about huge major labels acts on the other hand, there is not a lot you can do to give them your money, they sold their souls long ago.
The Mac OS has had accessability options built in since at least System 7. Closeview allows for screen magnification and various mouse and button settings geared towards people with limited dexterity. The newer Mac OS versions have speech synthesis and recognition built that, coupled with OS 9's "panels" metaphor would make a perfect grandpa workstation. But if you've already purchased the hardware I don't know what to tell you.
Apple really could/should slap that ATI bitch around some...
Well, I was about to take what you were saying seriously but then you come out with this teenage loser comment. Apologies to all the teens out there to aren't losers.

And how old are you exactly? 12?
How about run Mac OS 9 applications stably and easily.

SMP did hit the mainstream, or did you miss a little thing that happened on the 15th called Macworld?

Hop to it, if you think you're up to it.
Otherwise, quit your whining.

Actually, MacBSD is now (and has been for a while) NetBSD/mac68k and it rocks! Same goes for NetBSD/macppc.

Finally. Thank you.
The response to this is kinda sad. Isn't there supposed to be a technically savvy community around here someplace?
All I can say is...
Suckers!
cheers,
Matthew
No might, they have open sourced Darwin. That is what Darwin is, the open source core on which Mac OS X is based.

USB -> RS232, USB -> Parallel, USB -> SCSI,
USB -> IDE
They all exist already, so if you looking to file a patent, forget about it.

I agree. Girlfriend, you probably could have done better.
