This is assuming FreeBSD cares aboutthe average windows user. From my own expeience and what i've encountered FreeBSD cares about being the best it can period. World Domination is not a past time for it.
Well you can control alot of that stuff fairly well. With unathorized software you've just taken some of those controls out of the picture. Ad and flash can be stopped in a number of ways, proxy, client side security controls, etc etc...
That is why you control what can and cannot be installed and only let authorized copies be used. If its unauthorized software then this could happen easily. Installing Eudora from a cd is alot safer in this case or using a created disk image for the entire pc with Eudora installed as well.
Not only that, but any network is only secure as its weakest link. Often times a network is broken into not from that hardened server but from a wokrstation or unsecured box on the lan.
It is a ssecurity risk when you have unauthorized software installed especially one that access the internet in some way. What happens if a trojaned version of Seti@home were installed and some ppl used that to get into the internal LAN?
Actually some colleges do have courses in systems adminstartion. As for creativity, a good sysadmin is that just like a good programmer is.
A good unix sysadmin is really a jack of all trades. You need to know bits and pieces of many things, as well as be a good troubleshooter and be able to keep up with the information glut and fast moving industry. Maybe you see htat sysadmin playing a game at 3 in the afernoon, but if something needs to be done at 3am who does it? The sysadmin, everyone's job is important and everyone contributes doesnt matter what you do (unless your a llama).
And DeVry/ITT tech will train a monkey not a sysadmin.
He never stated it was open source, his license doesnt state anything that would maek you think it was. He just says you can use and distirbute it as long as you give credit. Modification is never granted.
What it comes downto is older equipment cant handle dsl but newer stuff may be able to. Odds are they just say no to avoid any potential hassles since it is easier that way right now.
You have no understanding of what a sysadmin does do you.
It's more than just breaking things when they fix. It's security, system upgrades, patching thigns as they need. It's also dealing with attacks from the outside and making sure your network runs smoothly.
It's more than just hardware. There will always be a need for people who know the system really well. Maybe help desks will go away (which I doubt) but a unix adminstrator will be around for a long time since your secretary can't learn all that.
That isn't really a troll. Solaris on x86 is an afterthought by Sun. Hardware support is light, and ide is horrible. Plus it expects SMP all the time. Solaris x86 was created to get peopleto use solaris and work into their hardware which is what they really want to sell. Another nice thing, when many vendors say they support solaris they mean only SPARC.
ISP problems to be exact. They had to get a whole new server anddrop it somewhere else and update the DNS. This timed with the release of 4.3 has made things hairy. From what I can tell everything is back up now though.
do some research there bud. FreeBSD has been SMP for some time. Maybe not the best implementation but it's quite useable. 5.0 promises some much needed improvement for FreeBSD's SMP.
Not everything there is under the GPL. Do not automatically assume something is GPL'd.
Apache is released under the Apache License which sallows for binary releases undercertain restrictions.
MySQL is under its own license as well. Therrestrictions vary according to what you want to do with it. Some older versions are under the GPL though.
Qmail as far as i know has some controls on how you distribute it but its not gpl per so(I could be wrong here).
ProFTPD is under GPL though.
Rebooting only when you determine you want to or need to for an upgrade or major change is acceptable. HAving to reboot due to performance or stability problems or not having a choice because of a crash is not. Consider t he most common fix for a Windows box witha problem "Reboot it". That is not a fix that is just clearing the sympotms until they inevitably return.
The restrictions on.edu are you must be an accredited learning institution. These domains are free that is why they are so anal about giving them out. A school can get one, a teachers association probably won't unless they know someone. People need to read up on topic before spouting off things.
I would say it's upto the software publishers to ask this not him. He does not speak for all people who develop open source software. And many companies do give back, they return code back to the community.
This is why stuff like the GPL will never work in the corporate world imho. GPL is about politics not software.
Depending on their costs, this owuld be a classic loss leader trick. They take a light loss on this but make it back in other fees and services they charge for.
If you can control costs this is a very smart thing to do.
Main problem here is perception, MS has been caught in the past doctoring screenshots and demonstrations. Remember a certain video in a certain anti-trust trial? So someone calling them on what may be faked is not far fetched or a surprise given that they did something similar in a court of law as submitted evidence.
This is pretty funny trollig/FUD. Note the lack of actualy facts to back anything up. You need to seriously remove the anti-BSD chip on your shoulder man.
Wit hsoftware its the design phase not the coding that is the most important. Any monkey can code but finding someone who can design a good piece of software is hard.
Often times time constraits force people to take shorcuts they shouldn't to release buggy or incomplete software. Thats the real problem , no one is taking the time to do it right the first time. They think, oh i'll just post some patches on our website, or i'll get them on the upgrade with that fix. Lack of ethics and lack of professionalism and lack of time all contribute.
The other big issue is communication, many times the clients needs are not fully understood or the project manager doesn't know what questions to ask or assumes information is known.
When these things are solved perfect software may be a possibility.
Actually you can be deained upto 72 hours wihtout being charged, its in the US Constitution.
Well the TrustedBSD extensions are FreeBSD based, Robert Watson is a FreeBSD developer so this makes sense.
This is assuming FreeBSD cares aboutthe average windows user. From my own expeience and what i've encountered FreeBSD cares about being the best it can period. World Domination is not a past time for it.

Well it may suck, but from Wind River's perspective it wasn't something they wanted to bank roll. You cannot blame them for that.
Does it suck? As I said for slackware users it definitely does. Was it a surprise? No it was not.

gvim build on freebsd, heck there is a port.

Privacy? More like he learned from other mistakes (like his dad) and doesnt want an email biting him in the ass in a few years.
It's called the fifth ammendment, you can take the fifth on this, in fact i think it has been done.
