  1. um, HELLOOOOOOO... on Surround Sound Quickies · · Score: 1
ok, mr. steven ball obviously knows nothing about cameras, because he thinks that if you put the camera as close as you can, you'll get a big, clear picture. sorry, but unless you have a macro function on ur digicam, you won't be able to get a focused picture while you're less than a foot or two away from the subject. get one with macro, or better yet, buy a canon d30 and a cheap sigma macro lens... then you'll be able to get pictures like these .

  2. Netscape missed the boat for /.'ers... on Netscape 6 Vs. 4.7x · · Score: 1
Netscape would have been better served by enhancing the Mozilla preject in the key areas it is lacking (speed, bugs) rather than adding tons of useless marketing features.

Have you ever thought about who Netscape was made for? Just like in every English class, you have to consider your audience, but user in this case. Let's say that you have a copy of Notepad and a copy of Arachnophilia or other better text HTML editor. Now, would you be giving Arachnophilia to a comp newbie who just learned that the CD-ROM is not a cupholder? Didn't think so. You'd give them Notepad or maybe something even easier, like a text editor with huge buttons that take up 1/4 of the screen with tooltips galore.

You have to know who you're developing/coding for. Evidently, Netscape was developed for an obviously less computer-literate audience. Mozilla was developed for /.-type people. Use the Milestones, and stay away from Netscape if you don't like it. Better yet, get the Moz source and tailor it to your tastes.

  4. Movies... on "Red Planet": Stay Here · · Score: 1
Doesn't anyone go to the movies for things other than a intricate, complex plot that would satisfy any geek's craving for a fantasy Mars? I mean, come on, people. Maybe it's just the Slashdot community that has to have everything just perfect so that they can feel good about seeing a movie that really conveyed what they wanted to see, and not really what the director/producer intended.

I guess that since I enjoy most movies, I'm either stupid and ignorant, or I'm simply not part of the /. community.

who really cares about standards compliance? i know that everybody should follow roughly the same guidelines as other browsers, but to tell you the truth, what significant difference does it make if you're viewing webpages that have flash in them now? even if they have CSS and DHTML, there isn't too much lost if you don't have those two. if you DO lose too much if you don't have those two, then that web developer isn't making wise choices on compatability.

i'm not completely discounting standards compliance, but if everybody did the same thing, we'd all have identical browsers, and where's the fun in that? oh wait, i forgot about the whole speed of the program thing. oh well.

  7. OKAY I WAS WRONG! on Newest Quake 'Productivity Tool' -- The CLAW · · Score: 1
I misunderstood my first comment, and I think that there probably are not enough buttons for most multiplayer gaming situations. Especially in HL:Counterstrike, I think that the communication aspect is important, so a keyboard would work much better in this case. By the way, what happened to the microsoft natural keyboard? How come I don't see any more of those?

  8. It's a good idea... on Newest Quake 'Productivity Tool' -- The CLAW · · Score: 1
But isn't it similar to using a second mouse? I don't see how this is much different from using two mice other than the improvement that there are more buttons. If the Claw is so much better, why not buy two and use two of them instead of the mouse? Another concern is how if you roll the claw to the extent of your arm, how do you pick it up to move it back in the air to go forward again? (same situation as using the mouse to move forward in Quake)

  13. This is a good first step... on Shielding MP3 Databases From Copyright Violations · · Score: 1
When the data itself is only to serve as information, rather than actual data, there has to be something to protect it. In the case of Lyrics.ch, they got taken over because they got big. Of course, u can do a search to find any song lyric on the net, but lyrics.ch made it that much easier. Why bother making people abide by copyright violations when you know that there are other blatantly simple ways to get that info? Time needs to be spent on more important issues, like decrypting any new music/sound standards. :p

  25. What is this?!?!? on Clemson University Bans Free Long Distance Sites · · Score: 1

This is terrible. I mean, if the Internet provides such a service to the world, then why must it be silenced by the university? The Internet's purpose is to disseminate information, and Dialpad is part of this information.

I think that the university is overly greedy and needs to open their minds up a little about this, because if I offer free Internet radio on the Internet, then why doesn't the university block my website so that the students have listen to university radio???

Something needs to be done about this, because this is a clear violation of the 1st amendment.
