  1. Slashdot editors receive a lot of flak when they run dupes, or miss out on good stories. But this story about the ongoing cyber attack is literally the only one that makes sense - and I have read FT, NYT, and WSJ copies. Insightful summary, and perfectly stitched together. Kudos.

    Too bad the summary leaves out a very key piece of info, which doesn't quite fit with the hype-line;

Ukrainian state power distributor Ukrenergo said its IT system had been hit by a cyber attack, but the disruption had no impact on power supplies or its broader operations.

In other words, the attack was on their administrative network, not power or grid control.

    Thank you.

(unmarked cars are not about preventing crime, they are for catching people after they break the law).

No, marked cars are for catching people after breaking the law as well as a number of other things. Unmarked cars are for catching people 'as' they are committing a crime. Theoretically, if all cars were marked then a criminal would always know when it was safe to commit a crime.

But marked vs unmarked cars isn't a primary issue or solution. Spending more money doesn't seem to help either, because how that money is used is often limited to inneffective programs (not saying there are no effective ones that could expand). More cops can help, but some places see that as an unwanted intrusion. Programs that isolate young kids from bad influences while providing good influences work the best, but often the bad influences are family and so there is resistance to that type of social program approach. Stop and Frisk saves lives, but cities have determined the intrusion on individual rights is too great to save those lives.

So our hands are tied as we are left with little effective methods to deal with the issues. The politics of division make it that much harder to do anything effective.

It is also pretty simple logic to know that communication between vehicles provides useful information for safe navigation. Dealing with the unexpected is a large challenge in autonomous driving, and such communication can reduce unexpected events. In order for it to work, there needs to be a standard and we should take time to do it right, along with other standards that would help autonomous travel such as intersection communications and probably even parking lot communications.

I explained you in my last post in the last paragraph the scientific base. .

You did nothing of the sort. Maybe you just don't understand what constitutes a scientific explanation or evidence, its certainly not because some person teaches it, or because ancient societies named it. You've provided ZERO. I can find videos of people preaching religion all day, that doesn't mean their gods are real. Sho me a physical experiment with measurement and also a scientific explanation for results which doesn't breakdown in to 'we simply don't understand' at its fundamental level, because that is same as any religion.

As for making you happy, although you protest it must fill a psychological need otherwise you would not argue for it so much when you have no scientific basis. You say it doesn't matter but it very clear does. Similarly some religious folks similarly say their beliefs are chosen not because it make them happy, they just accept them as truth.

So why do you feel so compelled to argue for vitalism when you have no scientific bases, evidence or other? Why is it so important to you to proselytize it? You seem to be at peace believing in it, so why not just be happy with that and let it be?

"no mythical energy", but its only something you 'feel', then you just insult others instead of providing any scientific basis. Nothing you describe is anything but normal body chemistry on some mental need to explain it with vitalism.

On a thermal camera, you see thermal gradients produced by normal biological functions. Nothing more.

I exercise all the time. I just don't feel the need to attribute the results to anything but well understood biology.

Lots of 'ancient' societies have named gods and supernatural forces, that does not give them any legitimacy, but it does provide some people with a psychological 'fill in' for lack of scientific basis. I see that works for you. Very well, like I said, as long as it makes you happy.

  12. Just because it's done a certain way for a long time, doesn't mean we should never change it. It certainly doesn't cost Home Depot any more to print 1.5"x3.5" on the label instead of (or in addition to) 2x4. Anyone already familiar with lumber would know those are called 2x4's. They can save newbies the headache of buying the wrong size (who may not necessarily be buying wood for construction) and anyone looking for boards that are actually 2" x 4" can find them.

No need to make an expensive change when it is a very small problem. Even newbies rarely make the mistake. In fact, if they bought lumber that was actually 2x4 it would probably not work for a majority of the places you would order a 2x4 for, because it would not match existing standard lumber. So you would make the problem worse.

  13. Dimensional lumber names and sizes have been standard for longer than you have been alive. If you want to change the standard, then lobby for it. But don't blame EVERY lumber seller, distributor, and producer for using the standard.

This should no longer be a problem for you now that you are aware.

Agree. Those tiny swivel wheels on the four-wheelers aren't big enough to negotiate a lot of rough terrain, and for a carry-on size I have no need for more than two wheels. You can still find them, just bought two for my kids last month.
