Yes, perfect! When the babysitter calls to tell some parent Junior has had an accident and is on the way to the hospital or "where's the eppy pen he's having a reaction" and the silly thing is buzzing in a locker what do you think will happen? Even if the chance is remote parents avoid risk like the plague these days and won't want to be out of touch like that - sales will dwindle.
I put my phone on vibrate and I don't text in the theater but if an emergency arises I'll go out in the hall to take the call. I'll be damned if I am going to check in my phone and have to wait in line to get it on the way out like I do a urinal or risk some dumbass stealing it. I barely goto the theater now due to high prices, this would push me over the edge as would assigned seating or ID checking.
For the cost of a trip to the movies I can BUY a DVD and come pretty close to buying a BD version. I can EASILY rent\rip for less and I'm willing to wait for movies to come out on disk. I have a decent TV and speakers for a reason - the dumbass studios have made it more cost effective and convenient!
Think about it - a couple of parents decide to take their kid to even a matinee and the cost is nutz. If they have more than one kid and goto a prime time movie they will have paid as much for that trip and crappy food as they would a high def version for their own library. Movie theaters cannot survive like this forever and making the trip even LESS convenient is a stupid idea. Sue the wrong person just once and watch the fireworks splash back on them. Idiots....
Ya' know - there was a time when I'd goto a theater and see a movie more than once because it was good. I cannot recall a time in the past 15 years when I've been willing to do that and the numbers of movies I'm willing to pay a mint for is so low now it's not even funny. The studios are full of asshats.
Yes now if it would only index my library correctly and consistently AND manage to pickup my MKV files. I've been playing with this software for hours with some friends and they cannot even see what *I* have displayed as "indexed" and I'm not able to get it index my complete collection either. It has yet to index a single MKV file and insists that ISO files are programs and will not allow a change - go figure.
I am now looking for an alternative cross-platform program because this sucker sure ain't it. The fact that it has to reindex my entire library at each startup and cannot come up with the same results 2x in a row is pretty dissapointing....
Amazon allows you to download straight unprotected MP3s. There's no specific program from them that you HAVE to use to manage the resulting downloads although they do have one that will automatically place them in artist folders and register them with iTunes if you want to use it. I agree it would be nice to have the files lossless but I'd simply rip them anyway:-)
I dunno' but ever since I discovered that Amazon had DRM free MP3 at decent bitrates for reasonable prices I've been buying new music for the first time in about 8 years. Previously I would usually buy a used CD and rip it or borrow a friends - occasionally I'd download from someplace although honestly my tastes in music haven't found me wanting much of the new stuff. Now that I can cherry pick what I actually DO like from Amazon and often pay less than a buck while being able to easily put it on or play it on any device I or my family own I'm buying again.
So while piracy may not have ceased everywhere in my case, and that of others I know, it has certainly have been REDUCED. One would hope that the music industry would be bright enough to know that piracy (as THEY define it) will never actually go away. They can go after torrent sites and P2P software all they want but folks will still trade with friends etc. so making available at reasonable prices with reasonable terms aka no DRM is about the best they can do IMO. If they try to lock it up tight as a drum again I'll simply stop buying again.
Ah, now we're talking - very nice list and terrific to see that 802.11n is coming on strong. The $60 Planax is pretty cheap and a USB port could be quite handy! Poking around now looking to find some good info on configuring\hacking\loading this puppy with OpenWRT...
I'd like a good Linkxsys WRT replacement. The RouterStation mentioned in this sounds interesting but looks more like a board in need of a case in need of radios sort of thing - yes? The Pro model was the only one I saw a price on and it too doesn't look like it has radios onboard. Are these aimed at consumers or at WiFi dealers? If possibly for consumer use can you point to some dealers maybe?
Currently running DD-WRT on one of the early WRT54G units and an upgrade might be nice indeed!
a shame that wasn't also linked in the summary. Good pics and a sense of what is going on with the project. Seems they have a Flickr page and were filmed for Discovery's Dirty Jobs too - neat!
So they had no idea what they had then and just excavated tons of dirt? Somehow I don't think so. It would seem they had some idea then what they had and an announcement of a find and innovative removal method would have been pretty cool to hear about. I stand by my initial comment - the Slashdot summary makes it sound as if this was just now found when in fact it's been ongoing research for over two years. Doesn't lessen the significance but it does tend to be less sensational when you're a little clearer on time frame.
As for "kids" your UID betrays you. I ain't exactly new to this computer thing (lol).
but the article says they took over 3 months to unearth them TWO YEARS ago. Kind of took a little excitement out of it to get nearly through the whole article to find out this all took place years ago. Would have been nice to have more pictures of the process and maybe an explanation as to how they found the edges of the deposits - ground penetrating radar maybe?
Just GEM not good enough! Looks like it was COMDEX not CES duh. This was shown in 1984. Still not sure it applies as well as Quarterdeck's product but perhaps a closer look would be in order..
Glad to see I am not the only one who remembers this program! I used it a great deal myself and I think it applies to this problem pretty well. With Desqview you could run multiple instances of your environment without problem. So, while I was sorting\organizing mail from one BBS I could be dialed into another downloading more programs:-)
Also, there was another program that MIGHT qualify. I cannot quite recall it's specific name but I think it was GEM. It was VERY much like Windows but was most certainly out BEFORE Win3.1. Rumor has it that when it was shown at CES Bill sent his minions over to take copious notes and then very quickly announced they had something better - even showing "demos" that were nothing but put together movies with no code behind them,. GEM quickly died but I know I used it for a Form Filler software package at least - a package that became Perform Pro Filler if I recall. This MIGHT also apply although I think Quarterdeck's Desqview is much better...
I just bought an HP Netbook on Sunday, of course that means that the new generation that I had tried to wait for was due out! Dammit!
I really want that NVIDIA chipset too and oh I dunno a dual core Atom. Longer batt life is nice I guess but so far this one has been chugging along pretty good. Camera leaves a bit to be desired. These are cheap enough though that I won't feel too guilty about picking up another if the prices don't go crazy. Just keep the keyboards a decent size and pretty please give us an eraser head mousie pointer? Please? Touch pads suck IMO although multitouch might be nice...
When I was a kid I used to buy these little delta winged Styrofoam airplanes at the dime store. The were meant to be launched via a rubber band and a small tab on their underside. However I used to play with them in my grandfather's pool instead. I'd go down to the bottom in the deep end, flip the "plane" upside down, and release. Result? It traveled nearly the length of the pool straight as a string and fairly quickly before surfacing. It was a pretty neat discovery for me as a small child:-)
So, I too am not really too impressed by the fact that this thing moved forward when it attempted to float to the surface. I fail to see how that equates to decent propulsion performance from a tail that was modeled after a dolphin.
Ah sarcasm, cute. Yes I am aware of this Internet thing and would prefer that my personal details not be shared across it by companies such as CC but of course they might do that. Years ago this was somewhat less prevalent but certainly possible even for a bunch of idiots such as they. Frankly I do not care how my data got into their computers, I didn't appreciate it.
Phone never listed, ever. I don't buy that it was a reverse lookup and when I queried family members I found out the daughter had been there once about 3 years before. Either way it was WAAAAY creepy.
Yup, that's pretty much it. CircuitCity hosed me, I don't shop there and I tell others. Sears van destroys my car and they drag out payment for 3 years and fuck me, I don't shop there either (I have more Sears stuff in my house from prior to this than I can count, zero since then and never again).
Not every retailer hoses you, those that don't get my money until they screw me. I haven't run out of retailers yet...
That was indeed the hardware - wow that brings back some memories!:D thanks, was driving me nuts trying to remember it but I am sure that's the one - reminded me of "can opener"..
A few years ago there was an interesting device being sold that acted as an email dumb terminal. The device was sold sans any real license but the expectation by the vendor was that you would sign up for their service since otherwise the hardware was "useless". Except that folks figured out how to hack it and turn it into a remote terminal for various OS. I was interested....
I trotted down to my local Circuit City only to find that many others were also interested and that they were sold out. No worries, they let me go ahead and buy one and would let me know when stock arrived so that I could pick it up.
Meanwhile the company figured out what was going on and began trying to stop efforts to repurpose their hardware - unsuccessfully. I got a letter in the mail from the company a few weeks after I had made my purchase at CircuitCity. The letter was informing me that they had decided to change the license terms on their hardware - after my purchase, that signing up for their service was "mandatory", and that if I did not do so within X number of days or receiving my device they would CHARGE MY CREDIT CARD.
Now, I had never contacted this company, I had no intentions of ever dealing with them or of buying their service, and I had not shared my contact information with them. CircuitCity however HAD shared my name and home address with them and if the letter was to be believed was also willing to share my credit card account information to facilitate a charge! I trotted back down to the CircuitCity, canceled my order, and demanded an explanation - naturally they had NO clue.
I was beyond angry to say the least and fired off a letter to CircuitCity HQ. Their response was that no way did they share my CC information with this 3rd party but they said nothing about having shared my HOME ADDRESS! I let them know that I would never shop in their stores again and have told this story more times than I can count - it's been YEARS and I have held true to my promise not to give them a cent. Seeing them go under warms my heart - the jerks. The sad thing is that I nearly made this purchase with cash, I wish I had!
As a side note, the CircuitCity I went into was one I'd never visited as it was closer to work and not my home. When I gave them my phone number they had my complete address on file! Turns out that my girlfriend's daughter had shopped there about 3 years prior and made a single purchase. They STILL had our address on file tied to that phone number when I made my purchase. So yeah, these companies do cough up data and they also hold onto it a REALLY long time - thank you TJMax!
You sir are an idiot. You think all of the various computers being signed into botnets all happened because people clicked on things to install the software? Never heard of a browser exploit?
Nothing to worry about, your head is safe in the sand.
I seem to recall that in WWII the Allies air dropped some seriously crappy stamped metal guns into countries that were trying to resist. These guns were good for about ONE shot. Now what good would such a weapon be? Simple, they were used to shoot a soldier carrying a BETTER weapon which was then taken and used to further the fight! What do you think that did to the morale of the occupying forces?
Yes the army would be a terrible force to reckon with. How has that played out in Iraq? When you cannot tell a combatant from a civilian and when you never know who is going to shoot at you then defending yourself short of simply wiping out everyone is pretty tough. There's nothing that says that such a fight would be a stand up shoot ala colonial era fighting. Instead you're going to have folks popping up out of sewers, sniping from tall buildings or from behind trees, and generally screwing with your supply lines and infrastructure.
And honestly, if it ever got THAT bad what are the chances that some of those military folks so proud of the flag aren't going to be fighting right there alongside you having taken as many weapons as they could with them?
I hope it never gets that bad. Like a frog in water though they will just keep turning up the heat until one day we wake up and realize that most if not all of our rights have been stripped away. We're a long ways off from that and hopefully some changes are coming but who knows. It pays to be ever vigilant and having an armed populace is much better than having a flock of sheep IMO. Oh, no I don't happen to own a gun currently but I support the rights of those who do and I know LOTS of folks who own them - mostly more than one too;-)
Really? Didn't the telephone companies just recently get a pass from the outgoing administration on the things they had been asked to do for the Govt.? Sans warrants?
Really? Let's pretend tomorrow that they decide to ignore the UN and hey maybe they decide that the color of your hair or some part of your ancestry makes you unclean and you get to goto the gulag. What will you do? I mean that has NEVER happened before right? The world would never stand by and allow that to happen right? No mass gassings or mass graves would be ignored for any period of time would it?
This shit has occurred even in modern times, still think a nice distributed bunch of guns across the citizenry is a bad idea? I don't, especially looking at some of the antics of the administration finally getting booted here!
Yes, perfect!
