    is scanning this guy's WEB site to see what software HE'S "Pirating"? After the last twit you woudl think he would be asmarter than that but then again he did introduce this bill didn't he?

    Wouldn't it just be funny to find out his clerks run P2P software in the office? Or that he's pirating software like some other businesses out there? Anyone work for this idiot and willing to admit it? Give us the scoop! ;-)

    I too sent him $50. Sure, I'd like to have seen him fight this but he's a kid with worries about school. Let the RIAA see that people are pissed and supporting him, perhaps the next guy will fight. For that matter he's NOT the only kid having this problem. Support the EFF (I do!) and let them take one of these cases on. Hell yes I'll help fund tha tone too! In the grand scheme of things a couple of bux I can afford to someone who's been targeted by these bastards is the least I can do. Hopefully others will pry open their checkbooks and send what they can. Band together folks!

    I had looked HARD at the ReplayTV awhile back and was thrilled to see that people had figured out how to spoof a Replay box. Since then I had not been watching the development of the Replay community. The DVArchive software is a BIG leap forward IMO, I appreciate that lead.

    My BIGGEST requirement in a PVR is that I be able to move things to offline storage and the Replay is by FAR the easiest one to do that with. The TIVO requires all sorts of hoops and last I'd heard (many months ago) it was still hit or miss while Replay uses MPEG which is standard. I take it you lose the 5.1 though?

    The biggest issue I have now is that I have DISH and will suffer a double encode loss :-( DISH has their own PVR but I don't think the 721 has been hacked yet and DISH wants me to shell out an obscene amount of money for it since I'm not a new subscriber...

    Anyone hacking the 721? bigger drives? Video extraction?

    Movies are costing me $10-19 tops. Rental is at least $4 a night. If you forget to take the silly thing back in time you get hit with penalties. Newer movies are given shorter rental periods of course.

    I want to hear 5.1 surround sound when I watch so I don't rip DVD - not sure SVCD supports that but my player doesn't anyway so...

    To each his own but when I line up at the local discount store to look at DVD on a weekened the aisle is 2 deep with people browsing to buy DVD. I currently own more than 250 of the little suckers and any night I can't find something good to watch on the dish there's always a selection of movies to choose from and I don't have to sweat the rental thing. When friends come over there's always something there for them to watch. One of these days I hope used DVDs are as easy to find as used CD too - I've not bought a NEW CD in years, screw them.

    Mind you I NEVER bought VHS stuff ebcause it was a media that degraded too easily - DVD has proven to be a worthwhile medium in my case. Yes, I hate the MPIAA as much as anyone...

    The rental industry is being killed by the fact that for the cost of a rental or two you can BUY the silly DVD! I buy several a month and haven't rented a video in at least a couple of years. At first they refused to stock DVD in my area and now tey have them but I could care less becasue I buy the ones I'm interested in at a local discount chain. Renting doesn't make fiscal sense for me and isn't terribly convenient for me....

    P.S. I seldom watch movies in the theater either. I have seen Matrix Reloaded and XMen2 though. Both of them cost me MORE than what a DVD would've even at matinee prices! $12 entrance and the woman spends a ton at the consession - DVDs are WAY cheaper...

    I bought a NEW DVD from COSTCO no long ago. Got home and discovered I had already purcahsed the DVD previously so I put it on the shelf to give to a friend. Gave it to a friend later on, they cracked the seal, put in the DVD - label matched the cover - and were treated to the hated purple Barney!

    I laughed my ass off when they called me up bitching and insisted on getting the DVD back. I can hardly wait for someone to ask to borrow it :-) Unfortunatly I don't recall off the top of my head which one it was - funny as hell though!

    You argue that it's a tiny fraction - it's NOT. ISPs are having to upgrade servers and 'net connections due to the extreme volume of SPAM that travels their networks. SPAMmers are ATTACKING network connected mail servers attempting to force mail through and to steal mail addresses. This has occured to MY server countless times and it was NOT an Open Relay. Hell one twit crashed the box with his crap and his ISP smply refused to believe a dial-up connection could cause so much trouble - it can! It is so bad I no longer use MY SERVER for anything but RECEIVING mail, it has it's sending ability disabled. Anyone who pays for a 'net conection is PAYING for this problem. When a large percentage of overall traffic is nothing but UNWANTED SPAM then we ALL pay for it. When a mail server is so deluged with SPAM that it crashes and we cannot get our business corespondence then we PAY for that problem!

    The company I work for has been forced to use a SPAM filter due to the EXTREME amount of SPAM that recently began flooding our servers. Pornographic SPAM in a work environment is NOT cool nor is having to upgrade infrastructure to store or filter the garbage. Is it okay that a large company is forced to upgrade it's 'net connection because the SPAM coming INTO it's servers is so great? Still think it's free?! We filter but that's only AFTER it has absorbed a significant percentage of our bandwidth and so we must upgrade in order to continue to function. Do you think our customers don't absorb that cost? YOU do and so does everyone else, all businesses are getting hit to a larger or lesser degree. It costs.

    You truly don't understand the problem and have a very self centered view as to what's going on. It might have been okay when there was only a few SPAM messages being sent but when 9 out of 10 messages are SPAM then there's a SERIOUS problem. FILTERING is NOT a solution - silly butterfly be damned! Y

    ou cite TV - how would you feel if there were 55minutes of advertising for every one hour show? THAT is where we're at right now - get a clue!

    I buy a cheap crappy penny stock - lots of it. I then sned out SPAM touting this stock as being the best thing since sliced bread and wait for all of the ignorant people who believe me to buy a ton of the stock and raise the price significantly. when I feel the price is as high as it can go, and before everyone figures out the company is trash, I sell my stock at a large profit. People figure out the mailing was crap when whatever spectacular event I told them would occur doesn't happen and the price drops or crashes. The SPAMmer makes money, the people duped likely lose money.

    That's pump and dump - pump up a stock and dump it before anyone else figures out what's going on. Highly illegal and pursued by the regulatory folks when it's noticed but if you stay under their radar you're good to go....

    So then why isn't Google being sued? Surely you can use Google and any other decent search engine to find content that shouldn't be out there. I don't understand how the person who simply ran an indexing service for files = both legit and not - is culpable. Seems to me the people who put the files into shares are at fault and if they didn't realize it was shared then perhaps Microsoft is at fault? Really, it seems silly to go after the guy who provided the phone book for having received unwanted phone calls. A poor comparison but not so far off IMO.

    That is a prety vicious circle over there and our media - and theirs BTW - are pretty biased. We hear about the women and children killed, they hear that their enemies have been killed. The truth is somewhere in between. Worse, they have become so opressed that many cannot make a living for themselves - now how is THAT solving anything?

    What a mess. Neither side seems willing to solve this, it's all or nothing and a war of attrition.

    Wow, someone that actually understands the history of how Bin Laden got to be where he is now. Personally I find the idea that the sat photos were faked kind of funny, I'd be hard pressed to think that the Saudis just up and trusted the U.S. Hey, they invited us in to protect them, we did, and we helped clean up Kuwait.

    I'd agree that taking away rights isn't good but I'd disagree that it hasn't stopped a terrorist - from the linked article it appears that it may very well have worked. It would seem that a radio intercept or two may have been just what the Dr. ordered huh?

    As to Iraq - I'm of a mixed mind. Saddam terrorizes his people pretty badly. I have NO doubt that he's hiding something as his track record in the past is pretty poor. Already the inspectors seem to be realizing this as they find weapons that they lie about until proven wrong (bomblets). Sanctions haven't worked either, Saddam and his cronies live high on the hog while his people starve. The French and other countries (yes some in the U.S.) have continued to flaunt the sanctions too. Saddam isn't going to go away unless something changes and it looks like we've decided to make that change. In the end I'm not sure it's going to work and I'm not yet convinced we're going o get Afghanistan back on their feet - I hope we do, those people have suffered enough.

    Where is there a company selling hardware for the supra ECU? I've seensome that are reprogramming it for you but none that allow you to reprogram the stock ECU yourself. The Miata box is the Link and I'm not sure it uses the stock ECU either. Fun stuff for sure though!

    GEMs and AEM teamed up to produce the AEM EMS available in the states and distributed by GEMs. www.aempower.com or www.aempower.com/bbs for their support board where you can learn more and DL the software to play with. If you're used to GEMs you'll recognize this stuff pretty quickly..

    Prices have dropped fuirther than you realize! www.aempower.com\bbs is th esupport board for the AEM PnP computer. It covers Hondas, Supras, Miatas, FD3 RX7, and a Ford application is about to come out with many more on the drawing board. This puppy costs LESS than $2k! You DO need a laptop and W/B O2 to tune it but it's a terrific value.

    Holly has their Commander series which is decent and SDS has a pretty decent setup that uses a handheld programmer - it's running a pile of fast cars!

    If all of that doesn't suit you look into the DIY-EFI mailing list for their project. You can also look into LT1-Edit and LS1-Edit for many GM V8 cars, that software allows reprogramming of the stock ECU. Hondata mentioned in the article does much the same thing using an emulator chip and some PROM burning software. This stuff just keeps getting better and better :-)

MUCH more impressive when you don't have to dive into the motor and start pulling out pistons and rods isn't it? You retain A/C, heat, stereo, and comfort? ;-)

    Oh really? That's a bit broad of a statement don't you think? Miata with turbos are making 1/3rd more power witha turbo on stock guts - no problem. Mustang Cobras are making about 50% more pwoer on stock guts. Toyota Supra make about 100% more power on stock guts if not more. you don't always have to jump into the engine and swap things liek cams , pistons, and rods! Tune it RIGHT and you're fine.

    Also realize that auto manufacturers often do things in the tuning to compromise performance for political and warranty reasons. Look at the 93-95 ford Cobra fro instance. GT40 heads, intake, 65mm throttle body, 1.7 rockers, and revised cam got them what - 35HP more? Gimme' a break! The Cobra ECU had a crapy timing map in it because Ford knew that those parts would make mincemeat out of the glass T5. They even retarded timing WAY back on shifts and speeds over 85mph. The Miata has a funky tip-in timing issue too but for no known good reason. Manufacturers aren't perfect in their programming either - they actually make mistakes occasionally. Ask any FD3 RX7 owner if they've ever experienced a hiccup around 3K at part throttle. The inejctors actually will shut off under the right circumstances at that RPM - it's a BUG. These are the kinds of things that reprogramming will fix...

    Oh I don't know about it being of no use to us roadgoing people. The AEM ECU in my car will be updated shortly with acceleration based traction control similiar to what the F1 guys have been using. :-P

    Not sure I like this article highlighting to the masses that this kind of thing is being done though. It's all we need for someone somewhere with no clue to wake up and think that by gosh these people must be stopped! I'd hate to see programs like LS1-Edit, LT1-Edit, Hondata, and who knows what else banished in a fell swoop of legislation. Same with replacement ECUs - they're "off-road use only" but you just know some twit will see this and get a wild hair trying to please some special interest group. Thank God for SEMA!

    Do be aware that signals will not always be what the manual says they will be. The AEM guys have had to REALLY do some legwork with O-scopes and logic probes to nail down some of them. Apparently they have even wired up ECUs on a bench, fed them static values for most inputs, and then varied just one to try and get some data out of the OEM app. I had said earlier there were too many variables to do this and was wrong - these guys are doing it. You won't be doing it on the road though! I would also suggest that you pack whatever box you build with a TON of headroom for 0-5volt A/D and binary inputs. The AEM has a BUNCH of extra I/O and I'm already bumping into limitations :-(

    Realtime programming is a problem with reversing another's solution. However it would seem to me that an EPROM emulator would allow you to swap values on the fly. With an easy to use interface most anyone could do this and then burn a chip later - or not. The Autologic and Hondata stuff does some of this I believe.

    Anyway, if you know the sorts of people into that sort of low-end code then you're likely in an industry where that's commonplace or people have a penchant for that. Believe it or not that's not "normal" :-D I know a person or two who's that bright (not me to be honest) and they like this stuff too but keeping them focused on the project for an extended time might be hard. They have lives too and there's money issues to do the development. They work on neat stuff on their own time but it's slow slow I'm afraid. At least we've now got the 'net to allow dispersed groups to do this kind of thing so it's more likely to get done now than it might ever have been. If you can do it terrific but I think, again, that it will be harder than you think :-( I wish you luck though!

    That's fine if you've got enough of a user base of qualified people who are interested in doing the support. How many GPL projects languish because the original programmer got tired of working on it and moved on? Plenty of them I'm afraid. It's also much easier to take this project on than it is to see it all the way through to completion. Even the DIY-EFI guys don't have what I'd call a commercial level box unless they've made some big strides since I last looked. Those guys are hardcore serious and many are WAY skilled\smart. How many years have they been working on their project? With many cooks also comes many people pulling in different design directions - again the DIY guys have demonstrated some of this in the past.

    It's one thing to build something like an OS where MANY people have a serious vested interest and an "enemy" to poke in the eye like Microsoft. But how many people are looking to replace the EMS in their cars? Now, of that population how many are skilled engineers as opposed to hobbyists like myself who simply want to get to an end goal? Your user base has just become pretty small. You must now convince them to provide your support while making a living elsewhere. Ever smaller isn't it? Quite possibly we're back down to one person or maybe a few students passing through college trying to get some project or other working. Hrm.

    Reversing an existing product like the LT1\LS1 ECU, the older GM PROM based systems, or even something like the Apexi PFC where the manufacturer doesn't disclose all tuning parameters or protocols makes more sense to me than starting from scratch (both have been done). One of the more impressive projects I've seen undertaken by one man was the reversing of an older Holley EFI system - much bad code fixed and shared. That made sense to me! The DIY guys documenting and writing tools for the older GM modules also makes sense to me, great work for people on a budget. I know - reverse the old Crane Interceptor and write some datalogging and control software for it - lots would go after it instead of th ecostly package that already exists sold by Anderson Ford. It would need to be Windows based though to get much interest.

    Then again I don't program Realtime OS for a living either. Show a cabinetmaker a tree and he sees furniture, show it to a woodsman and he sees firewood, show it to a birdwatcher and he sees habitat. This is a challenge for you because it's related to what you do already but understand it's something that not that many people see the same way.

    Different strokes for different folks - obviously my point of view is different than yours. If you can take the world by storm with this thing then by all means go for it so that I and others less skilled can benefit but I think the task is far bigger than you realize. I believe you'll learn much though so it certainly won't be a waste.

    No Nissan apps - yet. In case you didn't notice they're still developing applications. Ford Mustang units are about to be released as well as a unit for the Miata. BMW, VW, Nissan, and others are all on the list of apps. More than one 240SX user would like one of these units and some are pushing for support of the RB series engines - I hope it happens :-)

    $1500 is a bargain compared to others that cost at least double and in some cases 4 and 5 times more. The hardware is only a portion of the cost - support is a big part of it. They have qualified engineers making this their full time job and they need to eat. I'm willing to support them if they'll support me - a fair trade.

    Build your system and try supporting just 20 users and you'll quickly figure out just how much your time is actually worth to you.

    By all means, give it a whirl. If you think it's fun doing that sort of thing go for it. In this case though I don't need th source code and if I had it I wouldn't have much use for it. the features I've wanted and have asked for have been delivered or are in the works. They continue to improve the product at no added cost to me.

    Idle will be interesting but first it'll have to start. The list of variables just to do that is huge andI think I've got something like 7 tables worth of data measuring coolant, air temp, and other things to worry about. After that you get to idle. Hrm, closed loop A/F won't help much at idle BTW - gas flow is too slow, W/B reaction is slow, idle motor has some hysteryses (sp?) etc. etc. To get a rock stable OEM idle is a feat - good luck.

    Heh, and good luck getting people who have been there and done that to shut up. You not only have the burden of tons of hours worth of tuning time to contend with but development of the hardware as well. It also sounds as if you just might have some engine theory to learn as well - I hope not as that will make this a royal bitch to do.

    BTW - datalogging the stock ECU outputs may not help much. It will probably give you a roucgh idea of the fuel curve and most certainly the spark curve. If you REALLY want that stuff I suggest you go look at the Hondata demo. They give out a stock Honda map and if you ask around nicely you can get maps from other Hondas - your car might be one of them if you're lucky. that will save you trying to extrapolate the Honda fuel curve from outputs. Since there are so MANY things that influence fuel trying to extrapolate it will have you going in circles. TPS, IAT, coolant, MAP, RPM, accell fueling, O2, and probably more all have an effect depending upon the EMS used.

    You'd almost have an easier time converting an old GM EMS to work on that car. Much of the PROMs have been documented and you could spend more time having fun tuning. Actually the later LS and LT1 units that are Flash programmable might be even better. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

    Oh legality? That cuts both ways as what you're doing with the Honda is likely just as illegal. I do have another vehicle that will get this EMS down the line that's exempt but I'm not driving it nearly as much as this one. At least I've not strapped a bunch of piggy back black boxes to the sensors to fool the stock ECU, hell my car probably runs cleaner than the ones with that done to them!

    to my knowledge Jason has been flown out a couple of times because the car owner wanted his assistance tuning. when tuning a multi-thousand dollar motor to power levels approachine 100RWHP it makes sense to use a pro. Jason can tune in a Supra at that level in about 4-5 pulls apparently. He wasn't called in because someone couldn't get it to work. In fact he's been called out a few times and groups of people ahve shown up to have him do their cars since he can do it so fast - just like the GA guys travelling to New Orleans to do turbo installs. Nothing wrong with their setups but some people want pros to do the installs and they're willing to pay airfare and more to get it .

    If you know something about this I don't by all means feel free to provide details and I'll be happy to check into it with AEM on their support board.
