Okay, so you won't meet me at CompUSA, and that's fine.
I use my B&W SK constantly, and it has nothing to do with a fear of loneliness or lack of feeling important. Talking about a need for connectivity, I was without my SK this and really all technology this last weekend, and had a great time. I use it to chat with my friends when I'm away from my computer or prefer to be outside or doing other things away from my desk. Most of these people I know IRL first. It's also very handy for Geocaching.;-)
It's a connected livestyle that I've chosen, but I detach myself every now and then. I think it's rather healthy, honestly.
I wrote too fast! I meant to say that it was my visi.com FROG that I left in the cache that was mentioned in the article. I don't work at visi.com, I am a business customer.
The article is heavily drama. I am a geocacher that knows two of the people mentioned in the article. When they say "Three park officials walk up. Will they kick him out? Not today," they're referring to Washington County Park Officials that not only allow geocaching, but promote it as well. Drama, Drama, Drama...
Nola Cutts, mentioned in the article, said this:
"LOL -- You know what? I talked for the better part of an hour with this reporter about my philosophy of "leave no trace" and my "trash out" activities and the progress MnGCA [Minnesota Geocaching Association] was making with having people pick up garbage on the trails and how I thought geocaching was environmentally friendly in that regard..... You have all heard this from me before
Toward the end of the interview we were JOKING about how my husband hates to geocache and how I hate to fly fish. So what quote does he use, my speech about recycling or fly fishing? AAAAKKKKK!"
They chose to make an almost faticious battle between the parks and the unknown techno-nature-hippies instead of talking about how interesting Geocaching is, and not only that, but most Geocachers that I know of in the Twin Cities, and I know that most with the Minnesota Geocaching Association also help clean up city, county and state parks during caching trips. I'm dissapointed the article was even made, and even more so that it's on Slashdot!!!
The reporter failed to mention that the MN DNR is working on a plan for Geocaching in State Parks as well.
On a final note, that is my visi.com they found mentioned in the 2nd to last paragraph.;-)

It took most people 5+ months to get their rebate when purchasing a T-Mobile Sidekick (Danger Hiptop). How different is this from the scams where you buy things "for free" by plopping $200 on something and getting a $200 rebate (6 months later, after they've invested your money)?
It's because of this, that I'm unable to listen to Triple J in the states, because this Australian station may talk about the olympics during parts of it's broadcast, and also has minor olympic coverage. So therefore, for their safety from the IOC, they stop their broadcasts 24/7 until the Olympics are over. This applies to some other.au stations as well...
It's also kinda pathetic that because of this, no one can broadcast any live video of the olympics... so in the states, you're forced to watch NBC, and you can't watch any other station broadcasting anywhere in the world... assuming you don't have satellite. Kinda has pissed me off, as I stream my video, as I don't have a television. Therefore, I have not seen any Olympics this year.
Adobe Premire is to iMovie as Adobe Photoshop is to MacPaint on a Mac 512K. Just because they give away SimpleText also doesn't mean people aren't going to buy Microsoft Word for the Macintosh. Not really a Monopoly power issue in my opinion. Give away the basic tools, and if you need any kind of power, then buy a power tool. I think it's a good idea.
I am 100% for what happened in Holland, Michigan. I am, like seemingly most/.ers, very against censorship.
But, this isn't a 100% win-win situation. Because to me, censorship isn't the answer for protecting our children from mistakenly browing to pr0n or extreamly hateful material... so what do we do about the young children browsing?
Now, keep in mind, I'm not talking about the kids who *intentionally* seek out pr0n and stuff on racist organazations, kids will be kids, that's a topic I don't want to hit on here, because that subject can be a whole 'nother thread...
The issue I do want to address, though, is how do we prevent the innocent from stubmling across pr0n *mistakenly*? I don't want a 5 year old in my library, doing legitimate reading or, hell, reading about Pokèmon characters, I don't care, then hitting the wrong link... And don't come back trying to tell me that kind of thing doesn't happen. =)
Parents will understand that there is a time and a place for children to be educated about the "reality" of things in this world, and sometimes age 5 isn't always the best time to explain all the hate-groups in our world and the high existance of pornographic material.
So, if not censorship (which, as I said, I am against as well), what do we do?
Perhaps we could use this bot to idenitify people using languages other than the set language for the channel... and work as a translator... straight translations, or perhaps humourous.
-[_efty- I o/c'd my G400 to 150/200MHz, and I didn't really need a fan, it's got a beefyassed heatsink on it stock
-babelbot- Don't you need a radiator to maintain this thing cold?
Nevermind, I suppose this would get annoying really quick.
I'm not really sure why this is news... I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm acutally looking for answers:
What *real* significance does this have in terms of the real world. This date means nothing in terms of science, math, technology, it's just another date... and it's not even that cool.
I don't know of any OS that cares about the "even-ness" or "odd-ness" of dates...
Perahps this article should have had a big foot in front of it instead of a newspaper?
...unless someone explains that this has any relevance... Thanks much for your help.
jd - I totally agree with your comments. To add on it, I'd just like to mention that I'm using *this article* to explain to non-techie friends of mine that LINUX IS REAL, and LINUX IS COMPETING IN THE REAL WORLD... so many people, as you said, jd, think that Linux is some nerd-head backwards "dos-like" primitave penguin OS... thanks to IBM...
I can pass this article on so my non-techie friends can start taking the idea of Linux seriously.
Not just that... but the feeling of jumping on a jumppad... and damn, the feeling of beeing cratered? This could turn into a sensation-drug.... how about a rocket jump?
Unfortunatly, I don't have any prereleases of OS/X client... and I know the latest developer release doesn't have the Aqua GUI... but if anyone has their hands on GUI, or heard and rumours...
Does anyone know how much memory the GUI eats?
To the looks of it... perhaps running Quake 3 as your Finder may take less memory.
distributed.net announcements don't kill other projects. It's too bad that the existing OGR project decided to pack their bags... but laying blame on someone else?
I'd think slashdotters are used to holding strong to an underdog. Like someone's just going to quit working on some app for Linux just because some other company announces they are going to make it for Windows?
You get the anology.
Secondly, distributed.net supports distributed computing efforts as a whole, not just their own. See their Mission Statement where they say "...we will advocate distributed computing..." implying as a whole, not just themselves. Their mission is to do things "...in the advancement of distributed computing..." not just distributed.net.
Thirdly, distributed.net even credits the Origional Effort on their OGR Page... and in no way told the origional effort to stop what they were doing.
Actually, if a distributed.net ID hasn't had a team attributed to it for 3 days, then that person re-joins a team, those last 3 days go to the team they join.
...therefore, bringing the 31337 skript kiddi3z back down on their kn33z...
Unless, of course, they've installed the client on every computer in their Jr. High Computer Lab.
Like I'm going to take down all my workstations here to sacrifice not doing csc blocks for distributed.net? ALL servers and workstations here (50+) will be on over the new year.
Okay, so you won't meet me at CompUSA, and that's fine.

The fake price on CompUSA, the $608.03, refers to the release date. ;-)
