Any president who reads the bible for help making presidential decisions cannot be pro-science,

That's an incredibly closeminded opinion, even with the "president" distinction. I read the Bible as part of my faith, yet am still interested in science enough to have degrees in mechanical and petroleum engineering, and following a career using that knowledge. Look to morality if you want to blame religion for any hindering of science; cloning people falls into this category, whereas topics such as the Kyoto Treaty and greenhouse gas control are grounded in economic-political ideology, with adequate science backing both sides of the debate.

At any rate, all these answers look pretty canned. There's some differences in mostly environmental and nuclear arms issues, but both candidates are saying the same rhetoric. Besides, both candidates profess to be of the same religion, so I guess their opinions on science don't matter anyways.

Hematite is formed by sediments. Since a primary way of sediment creation is by water, it stands to reason that the presence of hematite is a possibility that water is/was there. I don't really know the mechanics of how it's formed (not a geologist), but from it's molecular formula of Fe2O3, I'd imagine that the water combines with iron to form it.

Some links about hematite's composition and how NASA thinks it'll lead to indications of water existence:

  3. Good or bad? on What Will Human Cloning Mean For Humanity? · · Score: 1

Depends. I feel that cloning organs and the like would be a massive boon to humanity, where we'd never have to worry about a lack of organs for transplants. Plus this will likely allow more research to be done on these organs to find better cures and treatments.

Cloning humans with a brain and self awareness, I don't think is such a great idea. Maybe for dumb automotons to do hazardous work and are put back into a box after work and don't care a bit, much like a living robot. You can almost compare to clones to AI, both of them could either just be smart about certain things and dumb in everything else (lack of self awareness) or self aware and living like "real" humans with the implications that come about (Blade Runner comes to mind).

Cloning like all technology will have it's alignment based on what we do with it. Making clones of organ, or advanced robots to work on assembly lines is one thing, making a real person is different, and is something that I don't think we as a whole can handle yet, as it WILL be misused.

I honestly hope that www.xenu.net wins in the end, because I see this starting a dangerous precedent of deep-pocketed groups controlling what information we are exposed to.

As another /. poster said earlier (would post link but can't find it), it's people that steal movies and cd's from stores that cause the biggest financial drain on the industry. Couldn't fight them, couldn't get the adminstration to deal with them, just couldn't stop them. Well, I graduated, and in my first semester of college, some of those guys decided to continue to harass me. So I called the cops on them (what they were doing WAS in fact illegal on the books), we had a talk about the situation, and I haven't heard from them since. Problem solved finally.

My point? What exactly changed from when I was in high school to college? I was 17 when the above incident happened, so it couldn't be that my rights are waived before the age of 18, otherwise the cops would've said "Tough shit, kid." I've been in public education in both instances (public hs and state university), so I know I was covered by the same state laws. So why all of a sudden do I have rights now? It's because public primary schools would violate those rights, either by action or by disinformation (never once in government did I learn about personal rights, call it a flaw of my class).

Whining about people that abuse your rights? I hope you do, because if it can happen at my old high school, it can happen to another.

And the town I live in (College Station) is almost notorious for being conservative, hence more likely to card (I remember seeing many young kids being refused admittance). Makes me wonder about this backlash against popular entertainment that's going on now.

  21. Big Companies on AOL acquires WinAMP, Spinner, SHOUTcast · · Score: 3

AOL certainly has been making big strides in acquiring the leading competitors in different areas of computing: Netscape, ICQ, Winamp, etc. To me, this is definitely AOL becoming another internet/media giant (Microsoft comes to mind quickly as an example). I don't really trust either company, or companies similar to them, and frankly, this scares the Windows-using part of me; the Linux part of me just laughs nervously over these acquisitions.

However, I see a large difference in how AOL and Microsoft are becoming giants. Microsoft just drives different companines out of business, providing only their crappy programs as alternatives. AOL, on the other hand, just buys out the companies and (hopefully) allows them run themselves without any AOL intervention in the coding process. That software remains out there, perhaps even promoted by AOL, and it remains a viable competitor to the crap Microsoft and other similar monopolies throw out at us.

I'm not saying AOL is a good guy for buying out these companies; these buyouts are in the interest of AOL, not the companies. I personally hate AOL's services. But at least AOL doesn't crush them out of existence. The great software is still there, it's just AOL owns it.

I'm probably wrong on some points, this is just how I see from my user-end vantage. Right now I have Netscape and ICQ open, and I'm having absolutely no problems with them (even the fact that AOL owns them). As long as the software AOL buys out remains the same, in the short-run I have no problem with them buying companies out. The long-run impact is something I'm still thinking about, and I see both good and bad in it. It all depends on how ethical AOL will be (yeah right).

  25. Wake up! on Students Opting Away from high-tech Degrees? · · Score: 1

I've been seeing a serious lack of technical degrees here at my univeristy (Texas A&M), one that was founded on technical degrees. Now we have so many people in liberal arts and business, from either going straight into it or failing out of engineering, that the college of business is jacking up the requirements for admission for LOWER-LEVEL CLASSES to absurd levels. We have so few engineers in my major that all my classes are half full and a good number of students lack the minimum requirements. I definitely see a lack of technical degree seekers. For me personally, I love it. I'm getting a highly specialized degree that can pretty much only come from college (how many self-taught, accredited, mechanical engineers do YOU know?), and there's a better chance of me getting paid $50K a year to do something I love (solving problems and creating things).

On the flipside, I can see this as being bad in the long run. We'll have fewer and fewer techies that make this world run, and those that do make it out will be worse and worse. Seriously, high schools need to start pushing technical electives on students. Lord knows we have enough PHB with business degrees that don't know the first thing about computers or a servo.
