Our beautiful unified dos/unix print quota system broke because w2k refuses to authenticate for samba (as usual, another release from Microsoft containing enough changes to intentionally break competitors' products). Active Directory trashes our DNS zone files, making them unmaintainable and routinely breaking mail and NFS. The list of problems goes on and on... <p>
Oh man, tell me about it!! I had to have a PDC for a server domain so I pick one of the MS SQL servers we are using. Before putting allow it to become an active directory PDC, it never crash, and beheaved it self perfectly. Once I made it a AD PDC, NetLogin was sucking up memory becuase it couldn't find a DNS server. So I installed the MS DNS server on the same machine. Did it want to work with my Bind DNS server? hell no! So after all this bs I pretty much told netlogin to suck it self. But At least I had a PDC for the server network, right? Wrong, like you said it doesn't like samba, so I had to authenticate to the NT4 PDC in the client domain, along with setting up a VPN with a OpenBSD machine.
<p>
After alot of headaches I got it to work, but since microsoft want to be such nazi bastards I can't even untilize AD without distroying my whole network and switching everything to Win2k, something I will not do. When the PDC code is some what stable for samba, this AD crap is gone.
<p>
I feel win2k is great for running apps becuase it's fast and stable, but I would try to stay fifty miles from AD, and NEVER make a win2k a PDC if you want to keep your network "sane".

In essence HP recognizes Linux as an operating system powerful and stable enough to trust their Printing Server Appliance to, yet are unwilling to commit to supporting that very same operating system as a client.
Using Linux as a print server is easy. Any person with a general knowleadge of linux can setup a print server for appletalk, SMB, and TCP/IP. It's really not that hard at all. Now training 400 or so support staff personal on how to setup a printer on Linux is another story.
Figuring it would cost $500 per person, that's $200,000 dollars. That's alot of money to support 15 million or so Linux users, most of which doesn't really need support. I mean if a person can write a bash script, setup a firewall, and lives in a shell, why would they need need help with lpd anyways? Not mention there are more then just one way to print in Linux.
From a marketing stand point, it's just not smart to support so many diffence ways of doing one thing for so few users, but it would be smart to discribe how it work so that a Linux would spend less time figuring out what they have to do to work with the product without officaly supporting Linux.
Maybe when Linux is dumb down (making it easier to use, blah!), then we can get support.
Increasingly, the "average" user is using UNIX, or at least being exposed to it. The problem is... how do you learn something about UNIX, if you don't know anything already? As has been pointed out, documentation (installation guides, bug reports, security vulerabilities) are fragmented; quite frankly, there is no way that a new Linux user can set up a secure system, because existing distros are all installed with certain well-known insecurities.
The last time a check the "average" computer user is still using windows and still have no idea about running a server or a service. A UNIX workstation is not a desktop. It runs a services. Even X11 is a server. Everything is a server. Anytime you have a server, actions should be taken to make it secure.
Sure, a user who is sick and tried of windows may move to Linux, but have that user ever run a service? Most likely the user hasn't. They have no clue about services. Then they really shouldn't be running a server, but we want people to use UNIX. So maybe when should have a tight distro, totaly secure.
One problem is comes with that is even if you include a 100 page book stating everything that should be done about securing a box, most people will toss it aside and read it when they feel like and most of the time it's when they hack been hacked or think they might have been.
The second problem, they want to use their new found services, they want to have a web server, or a DNS server and don't want to go through all the crap about setuping the proper permissions or go through the hassle of chroot'ing a user into a dir.
Of course there is no excuss for poorly written programs.
If you think that's untrue, consider someone with a new computer and a copy of RedHat/Debian/whatever, who get's told that all this wonderful security information is available on the net. In order to gain access to it - and read about how to secure their system - they need to install an unsecure system. Of course, this isn't the reality of the situation - most new users aren't aware of security resources on the net, of course, and nobody thinks to mention them to newbies, because, after all, everybody knows about them, right?
It's true, but you don't leave all the lights in your house on do you? no, of course not, why? Becuase your power bill will go through the roof. Does everyone know this? Everyone but the people that look at the bill. See my point? It's just common knowleadge to turn off what you don't use. Maybe we should echo to the screen: "Hey, you don't need $process, you might want to trun it off." every few minutes.
Naw, we give *NIX user enough faith to make choices on their own. Nothing is stopping a *NIX user from finding a document stating how to secure a box and it's up to them to find the info.
The same holds true in this case; installing services - like sendmail - that have blatantly stupid default settings and open up a box to potential abuses, just because "everyone knows" that you need to change the default configuration to prevent it, isn't an answer. The systems should install locked down tighter than a miser's wallet, and require a user to gain knowledge in order to expose new capabilities.
Yeah there is something like that, it's called OpenBSD. What I think you are saying is: people who don't know, should be protected from the danger they might get into."
Now.... the average user is not going to just realize (he|she) needs to go to these places or that these things are even insecure..
The "average" user doesn't use UNIX. The "average UNIX user" knows at least "something" about security. When you first start using UNIX the first thing you find out about is security. Once they know something about UNIX, they start reading some type of document on how to secure a box.
Most of the time, these documents, tell the user to do eveyrthing that Kurt complained about.
Computer-generated charaters just suck. They just don't look or move even close to reality. They are very hard to believe and even harder to take seriors. They remove the watcher from the movie, unless it's a comedy or a cartoon.
Then they always cast computer-generated charter in this extermly lame way that just bugs me. Take that damn Jar-Jar binks, that singer in Return of the Jedi, all that crap in the 1st epoided, or that thing and that jerk on ZDTV. I removed ZDTV from my channel lists just so i will never have to see them.
Objects and fx are cool, but computer actors just plain suck.
I have just run this script again and got only IIS. It looks like the assim^H^H^H^H^Hconversion of Hotmail to Windows 2000 is now complete.
Not really. So what if the web part of hotmail runs on win2k. Big deal. ISS is a decent product. What about the back end servers that delievers the data and apps to the front end machines? What about the mail servers? What about the database, ldap, firewall, file servers, etc etc... I bet you a donut and the farm that these, the important services, is still running on UNIX and will run on UNIX for a long time.
Microsoft simply doesn't have a mail product that can deliever the load that hotmail deals with, or a database product that server handle million of requests. How about a file system that can deliever millions of files an hour.
The whole idea of having a VPN is to have a secure way to have machines on a WAN network without worriing about being tapped. VPN and security goes hand and hand. Why would comcast not want people to have VPN?
Let's say I setup a VPN. What I would do is set a ssh link from my firewall to my friends firewall or a machine I control. I would then forward everything through one port over a ppp link. What is inside of the tunnel, no one but me and the other person knows about. Comcast doesn't know if I'm transfering porn, email, mp3's, or text file on how to make bombs. And guess who else doesn't know? The FBI.
What it doesn't say is that if a student downloads a song to "sample and see if they like the album" and find that they only like a few songs, and not the whole album, they simply keep the good songs, trash the old songs, and continue to not by the albums.
This is a prefectly valid statement. It's accepted if you like the cd, buy the cd, you'll enjoy it more, however here's the problem, most of the time when people do the above act of only getting a single, it's becuase the band is a one hit wonder (they suck). A "good" band by any reasonable meaning is a band that produce good music. Not all of thier songs will be "good", just most of thier works. A one hit wonder only produce one, maybe two, or even three songs. By no means are they a "good" band. For what reason should you support the people that makes this trash? Oh yeah, someone likes the one song that was specialy designed to appeal to a large group of people to make the most amount of cash while doing the least amount of work and total disregard to any respect to what is "art".
Oh, and all college students lie...
....and they are a bunch of left wing liebels that thinks it's ok to pay close to 70% of total income in the million of taxes that everyone pay everytime they buy anything for the betterment of a government that don't like or trust them nor offer any real services to the people paying the taxes. And a government that pisses on the rest of the world.
Don't trust anything they say, especially when they want to save their own [or their pockets, in this case] ass. Why would college students say they do it to get free music when that could only be used against Napster, something they want to keep going?
I'm sure joe blow going to college and working full time at the local pizza joint really has the cash to buy every cd joe blow find remotly intresting only to find later, the band he just spent three day of food money is a just a one hit wonder crap band. Oh course, I'm sure he more then willing to spend the 15 bucks on seeing the band he really like, that he found on Napster, for one wild weekend that Joe Blow will remember for the rest of his life which also pays between 20% to 30% directly to the artist.
You know, when these things where released I said hey cool, that would rock!! But when i found out it ONLY ran NT, I looked else where. It's little wonder why people didn't buy these.
1) It's only NT... Who want to run ONLY NT without a option to run anything else?!
2) If you are going to spend 6-10k on a machine Do you want ONLY NT on it?!?
3) Other then cheap 500 buck to 2k software (that non-pro use) what run on NT that is used by people that have 10k to spend on a machine???
The only person I know that had one picked it up through a designer that worked for a company that bought this machine so he could do "something". Well it did want you expect of NT and since it only supported NT, they sold it for 1k to my friend after buying a UltraSPARC. My friend went through HELL to get to even to boot Linux!! Not to mention *BSD or any other UNIX version!! It's just another case of bad stuff not selling that well. It's not a surpise at all!
Thougts like this LET the goverment walk over people. It's saying "oh the goverment can do what ever they want and there is nothing anyways can do about it. The goverment is allways right". Thinking like this is what prevent us from having "HOLY SHIT, WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!!" on the front page of the news paper today.
The internet is the last medium that isn't controled and where I can say what I want and only pay a small fee to say it. Now it's about gone and the only thing you can say is oh well??
End of story. Nobody's constitutional rights were stomped on at all.
What the hell!! Only the guy that got screwed!!! Next it's going to be your site or your paper, your relgion, your idea. What if I didn't like anything you said and I had the power to "ask nicely, and get the ISP to agree that they shouldn't be supporting this" and was able to stop all post, all emails, and control everything that went to your computer??? You didn't sign an agreement with your ISP that forced them to allow you "free" access. Oh yeah, that wouldn't be stomping on your rights. To make a note unless you ARE the Internet (which is controled by any single company) now one have to route the crap coming from your system.
Me (taking the role of the goverment) can "kindly ask" to block everything coming in and out of your network and have a legal right to do so, if we went along with your "idea".
Did I just see liberty getting raped again?!?!
The people you oppress will come back to distroy you.
...the richest person in the world is a college drop out.
I might be a little nuts and have a problem with the way people view colleges as the answer to "wealth" but I simply don't see how completing college would have helped Bill Gates.
Say he finshed college and revieced all the crap taught to him from the ages. What would he be? Would he have reliezed that the contracts of MS DOS would be the key?? What bill gates has done is damn near as close as you can get to busseness genuis as it could possiably get. There is not a college in the world that would teach him what he knows.
Al Gore also wrote... we need tougher laws to prevent and punish them.
They are bored, let them go about their way. Personaly i don't care who has thier fingers over "crtl-Atl-del" on my console, it won't do anything. What I care about is how well they know UNIX.
When I'm around girl I don't have a problem talking to them for the first time. I'm a good looking guy. They seam to like the openess and truth in my voice. They just sense that and relieze I'm a good smart kind person, but i have to push them away. I have no choice, I must. I won't declose but I'm sure you might be guessing. What does it matter anyways? I'll be lucky if i live to 25. Either by illness, self inflected sucide, or act of god. That's three years away, but I still think I would be lucky.
When 'Nicole' was stolen by the goverment, our drug use, and foolish actions of Nicole and my own actions I went into a deep depression. Five years later i might be missing her but at least I have relieze that it was partly due to my actions. I thought I was the cuase. That i was a person that could only hurt and not love. I was a just stupid kid with a gift from a god, which she was. I hurt her deeply and I just wanted to protect someone. Since then I haven't been able to get close to anyone.
I started using Linux becuase it was something that could somewhat fill the vold in my head and heart left by her. But it was more to fill my mind with thoughts other then her. I knew I couldn't just let someone else in to replace her, she was to speical. So one day when i was laying on my bed i decided to do something and installed Linux. Now my life is no better then what was it was then but when I'm depressed, I can think about something else. mainly being depression of what I lost and what a waste i have mad of my life.
I found confort in a Ultima Online relationship last year mainly becuase i knew that we couldn;t hurt each other. I didn't even see a pic of her until 3 month after I stop playing the game and went for sysadmin and coding. She was a dream but something, like Nicole, i could never have.
Maybe one day i could find a person that would make me happy, but not today. But when I'm at a party and a woman is talking to me, it simply makes me feel good to know that here I have a wonderful person that something speical could happen, maybe it won't, but if I'm smart I can enjoy the feeling of being accepted for once, while I still can.
Integrated video, Integrated audio, Bottom of the line Winmodems, Non-intel CPUs, Non-intel chipsets
I have never had a problem with any of these other then being unsupported in Linux. But a month later there was support for it and when it was working it worked great. Expect for winmodems which will allways be the son of satan.
My problems has been a intel cheap chip on a 66 mhx and no cache. Or designs that come with horriable bottle necks on the PCI bus near the IDE and/or video port. Or the little cache for the memory. Or not being able to upgrade. Or the crap breaking, rebooting, or gerneral doing wierd stuff on me.
The non-intel bit show how sucked into the intel mind set people are. "Intel inside" Or nothing huh? BS. I rather have an AMD, PPC, MIPS, Alpha, or Sparc way before I buy a intel!!! I won't buy a Intel anymore. Oh winchip? Yeah they suck. =)
Packard Bell went under becuase every packard smell I have ever seen was slow, did wierd stuff, and broke when the warrety ran out. The product service was rude and you could easly expect to spend a hour and a haft to find out there's nothing that could be done becuase the memory crtl was shot. Then they would tell you take to bubba so you did and they end up screwing you out of 300 bucks and you still got the same old motherboard!! That's why I would NEVER buy a packard bell again or let my friends buy one.
People want to use their systems. If it cost 600 bucks, it works, works well, and last for a long time, they will love it, tell thier friends, and buy it again one. No one but geeks and nerds care if there is sound, video, NIC, or winmodems on the board or not. If it works well for what it was designed to do (Run windows, AOL, Quicken, and some Games) it will sell.
Toshiba is being forced into it. They would ignore the problem like a newbie in a irc channel!! If it wasn't for a lenthy and prehaps costly law suit they wouldn't do anything about it!!! It's easier to just say "ok, whatever, here!" then to fight it forever and come out a loser!!!
I bet bubba wrote his only copy of a important memo to the drive, which costed him MILLIONS in loses and since it screwed up he claimed it was the Toshiba fault!!
Which it was! Becuase they made it. BUT!! It's not becuase they "knew" about it, it's becuase floppy drives SUCKperiod They are bond to screw up that's why you don't put anything YOU WANT TO KEEP on a floppy!!
This is just a way for law firms to make money!!!
Oh sorry ummmmm to force company to make better products...
"did i say that right?" "yeah here's your piece of the pie." "WOW! A DOLLAR!! wasn't that a 2 billion dollar settlement?" "don't worry about it... you will get better products" "but who will pay for the 2 billions?" "umm you will" ***hops in a BMW and drives away quickly leaving you with a dollar, a false sense, and higher priced products. But hey, at least Toshiba is going to make better drives!!! only they will cost more now.***
The average CEO makes 400 times more the average american.
have two Eterms compiling two things at once in a dark room, while playing stolen mp3's, using free/stolen software, ssh'ed into a stolen shell account over a stolen phone line, long distanced, on a laptop you stole, in a house you shouldn't be in, with a ID you bought for 100 times the going price that works and having a belt around your arm with a needle stuck in it and post on slashdot with lynx.
After last nights "show" i am seriously thinking of taking my cable out.
Do IT!! tv is a evil tool of the devil brain washing people to think one way. Pawn your tv and give your kid a newpaper, a good book, music, movies, and the internet.
You have smart kids, don't let TV take that from you.

Me (taking the role of the goverment) can "kindly ask" to block everything coming in and out of your network and have a legal right to do so, if we went along with your "idea".
Did I just see liberty getting raped again?!?!
The people you oppress will come back to distroy you.
Just when i was looking for something to invest 10k in... i should make a killer on this!!!

...the richest person in the world is a college drop out.

I`l1 rapiab et ax son ax i fal lik ni
i hob tes don't muke me loke dubm
BLAH!!
BUT!! It's not becuase they "knew" about it, it's becuase floppy drives SUCK period They are bond to screw up that's why you don't put anything YOU WANT TO KEEP on a floppy!!
This is just a way for law firms to make money!!!
Oh sorry ummmmm to force company to make better products...
"did i say that right?"
"yeah here's your piece of the pie."
"WOW! A DOLLAR!! wasn't that a 2 billion dollar settlement?"
"don't worry about it... you will get better products"
"but who will pay for the 2 billions?"
"umm you will" ***hops in a BMW and drives away quickly leaving you with a dollar, a false sense, and higher priced products. But hey, at least Toshiba is going to make better drives!!! only they will cost more now.***
The average CEO makes 400 times more the average american.
200 bucks of crap for the little people
25k for the law suit filers
118 MILLION for the blasted lawers!!!!
have two Eterms compiling two things at once in a dark room, while playing stolen mp3's, using free/stolen software, ssh'ed into a stolen shell account over a stolen phone line, long distanced, on a laptop you stole, in a house you shouldn't be in, with a ID you bought for 100 times the going price that works and having a belt around your arm with a needle stuck in it and post on slashdot with lynx.
Then relieze what you are doing.
=)
When they drop liquid tv, head banger ball, and 120 minutes, and the daily running of music video from 1 am to 6 pm
At one time there was only show on from 6 to 7 and 120 minutes the a few cool show beyold that
After last nights "show" i am seriously thinking of taking my cable out.
Do IT!! tv is a evil tool of the devil brain washing people to think one way. Pawn your tv and give your kid a newpaper, a good book, music, movies, and the internet.
You have smart kids, don't let TV take that from you.
