Writing code for US is cool and fun but for the media it's dull and boring. Even showed someone a "hack"?? No? Why not? Well for me everytime I showed someone they lose intrest after the first 5 minutes.

"What do you mean it would take you all night?!?!? You're not a good hacker then!!"

    Disclaimer:

I enjoy coding when I don't make 50 million typo's and it's one of the most rewarding things in my life, next to sex and driving a 400 hp hotrod I built.

  4. Sounds about what kids think hackers are... on MTV's Hacker Portrayal · · Score: 5

Being the "haX0r" or "computer geek" at the party, when ever I break out the laptop to play mp3's everybody start saying "hack the FBI!" "crack some software for me" "break into my school and change my grades." I just wish once I would hear from someone something like "make this program run the way i want it to" or "help me secure my computer from evil people". It really bugs me. I have morals. I wouldn't steal from someone, trash someone's house, distroy what ever, turn off their power in real life just becuase I CAN, why would I do that in "cyber space"?

I believe it's really about the corruption in the world. People have to be good people in real life, just to get by, but when they get online it doesn't matter what they do. There's no big blue. They can do what they want and feel like a god when they DoS attack some lame server. Or setup a firewall that deny everything coming in with no services running and feel unstopable. Feeling powerful and unstopable is what people want to feel like. What is so great about spending 20 hours reading and writing code?!?! Nothing.
Thus, you will see what hacker really are in the news.

Of course hacker have nose rings, wear all black, listen to electrica, and are outcast of the world.

    umm...

A few weeks ago my friend wanted me to install windows on his box. He gave me a weekend so I'm like hell let's put Linux on this machine. The first night I install Redhat 6.1 becuase it was just release, what a waste of time, then Turbo Linux and SuSE just for the heck of it. Oh it was sweet, no problem with the video card, X went up at 1024*720 24 bit colors the 1st time. The nic went flawless. It was a really nice sweet install.

The next night I installed windows 98 on it. It took me four hours and 40 reboots to get the thing shipable. Windows couldn't find the NIC and I didn't have the drivers for it. Then had problems with the video card. Then it BSOD once when i was installing some programs. Had problems reading cd's I burnt. Between the 40 reboots, 5 crashes, 2 reinstalls, 3 formats, the B flick film and the haft gallon of ice tea I was burnt out and didn't want to do another windows install in my life.

I'm not some idiot. I understand the registy and how to make things works. The thing is I fix one thing then something else that has not ties to what i just fix breaks.

You want to do a real world test??

Try this one time. Get two machines that are the same in everyway. Install NT on one. Linux on the other. Do everything stock with no changes what so every. Just install it with nothing special. Simple right? Now let both machine sit. Just doing nothing what so every. Since you are an admin or make your self out to be one. Which one would crash first?

What ever machine failed, it can't be blamed on the admin. It can't be blamed on the hardware. It can only be the people who made the OS.

Don't tell me it's was a user error. You can get 100's of 1000's of people at random to install linux then NT and I'm sure that NT will 99% of time fail first.

Oh btw, 100% of my linux crashes has been becuase of something I did. Not the software. Of course I have only crashed my 11 home systems 3 times total in the one year I have been using Linux and all of them was becuase I was trying something completely new to me.
