    Considering it installs a binary, not source which compiles on your system that you can view, how the hell do you know what is installed?

    Not that I believe they're installing spyware or something, but just to play Devil's Advocate.

    What do you do that you need 40 - 60 tabs open at once? I don't think I've ever topped 15, and my normal work/browsing runs 4-9.

    A good story is one of the aspects of a good game. Good cut scenes can enhance the game's story and, done right, are an excellent enhancement. Blizzard has done especially well with cut scenes in the Diablo and Starcraft titles.

    If you want point-click, hack-slash then play Doom.

    From the article it sounds like a voice code phrase to authenticate yourself over the phone. They staff has to be able to see it to verify it. It isn't a computer password.

    I'll let this slide because of your high user ID, but dude -- this is Slashdot. Most of these people can't get DATES, much less reproduce. Their ideas of women come from 1) mom -- take care of my every need; 2) Hollywood -- dorks eventually get girls, and their bodily makeup is between 30% and 60% silicon; 3) Anime -- the tentacles go where?

    Median is the key word.

    I lived for a couple years in Wardner, ID, population 420. The entire Silver Valley only had a population of about 4,500 or so. We're 40+ miles from the nearest "city", with some big mountains in the way. And most of the Valley population had cable modems with 6 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up. Middle of nowhere Idaho and podunk towns of 200 - 1,500 had good cable modem access.

    Not quite.

    When they ask you to leave, it is a formal request to remove yourself from their private property. It also implies that you are no longer welcome on their property, so you may not come back without breaking the law -- trespassing.

    They can legally ask you to see your receipt, but can't force you. They have three recourses:

    1. Blow it off and ignore you.
    2. Ask you to leave (trespass warning)
    3. Restrain you and summon police, accusing you of theft. This isn't going to happen unless they have a real stupid manager, since it would involve swearing out a complaint and filing a false police report.

    Anyone know of a good WAP that uses the Atheros chipset? I have a Linksys WRT600N (wifi-N, GbE and USB) and while their European models use Atheros, the U.S. models use Broadcom chipsets.

    Come to think of it, anyone interested in doing a little gray market exporting?

    I'm not disputing really any of that. Sometimes I think we need to stop all cash aid to these (all) countries. Any aid should be in infrastructure built -- roads, sewer systems, clean water systems, a power grid, telecom -- and educating them with a goal of them educating themselves. Teach a man to fish, etc.

    Unfortunately, that won't help.

    The #1 WMD in Africa has been by far the machete, with over 1,000,000 hacked to death just in the central African region during the Rwandan Genocides, Angolan and Ugandan civil wars. More people are killed by machetes in Africa than bullets. Just Google "machete deaths africa" for pages upon pages of depression.

    Good point, but you're missing the fact that we are the only species on earth to create technology. Perhaps a tenet of intelligence requires a similar bodily structure? We don't know because we only have ourselves as a model on which to base assumptions, which is admittedly not broad enough.

    Also, a relative of mine told me that around 1969 or 70 or so at night she and a friend were on the porch talking. A light source came down, low/tree-top, over the street, quietly. It was NOT like any aircraft or hobby toys of the time. It seemed to be observing them, or just hanging around, then it abruptly left.

    Extortion would require that he demand something in payment, like money, for returning the keys. I don't think he did.

    If I work for a company, and lock stuff in a room and not give you back the keys when I leave, it isn't theft. Theft is actually taking something, and he didn't. The system is there, running and working. They just don't have the keys.

    It may be criminal mischief.

    Hmmm...under what Statutes?

    While employed he was authorized to access those systems. He didn't access them after his employment was terminated, so it isn't Computer Tresspass or anything similar.

    The system works, so he didn't break it.

    While they can certainly fire him for insubordination, I'm not exactly sure what he could really be charged with.
