Car makers may not want to win such a suit. By getting the courts to force them to make code available the companies establish a legal shield against law suits caused by people who incorrectly use the code. They can not be held liable if they are forced by the government to reveal that code. Sometimes suits are filed with the intention of loss or at least with the hope of establishing "clean hands" to show a jury that everything possible was done to prevent a situation.
I assume that she was simply trying to placate her voters with rhetoric rather than actually seeking to ban a book.
Frankly a normal education will tend to teach bright people how to build a pretty good bomb. A tiny knowledge of physics, chemistry or even eight grade level science will give a kid all he needs to build a bomb. For example science students are taught about dust explosions in grain elevators and how violent and dangerous they are. So any kid in middle school would tend to know that a bunch of dust in the air and a spark can create a violent explosion. Simply defining an explosion as rapid combustion clues students in. And teaching basic safety to kids such as using propane indoors without proper ventilation reveals the potential of using a building or room as a bomb. A trip to a hobby store and a look at model airplanes can teach a kid how to wire a simple remote control switch. By the time a kid gets to the tenth grade chemistry class the teacher has no choice but to teach how to avoid explosions in the lab. Naturally teaching how to avoid explosions in fact teaches just how to cause an explosion.
I realize that it is difficult to achieve a balance in fairness in sentencing but here we have an example of a court getting whacked out. Try and find a single case in which a drunk driver or hit and run driver who has killed someone gets 18 years in jail. Now it is obvious that no one likes to get a couple of hundred bucks ripped out of their wallets such a crime does not come close to killing someone and fleeing the scene. And i know that some people will say it involved more than one victim. But then again big tobacco and big coal kill a lot more than one person every single day and the law allows them to keep right on doing it. Worse yet as tobacco sales fell in the US our tobacco companies exported more and more tobacco to nations in which the population remains completely uneducated and allows children to smoke.
The long and short of it is that both our civil and criminal justice systems need a rework from the ground up.
Many cars are stolen with the intention of parting them out. If that is the case the car surely will be disassembled within the first 48 hours and engines, transmissions and everything else will be stripped and the bare frame abandoned or even cut up and put inside other cars that are taken to the crushers as they pay by weight. High end cars are usually loaded on ships and exported. Your target are local idiots who hope to alter numbers, paint, change the appearance and keep the ride for a long time. If locals did it then there is some hope of finding the vehicle.
Sadly our colleges have been under great pressure to become trade schools and offer numerous courses that should not be taught in college at all to placate parents and politicians. The idea of college has always been for people who love learning and not for job or career training. With education over the net what is happening is that people who love learning can learn endlessly. But on the down side we have many really nasty people offering supposed college level courses that are in fact worthless all the while charging big bucks for what students can get for free. Taking a 60K loan to get degrees from totally non accredited junk schools is beyond idiotic. Worse yet why does our government allow loans for young people to sign up to these scam colleges?
So that is what trickle down economics is all about. I'll stand in my lawn and wait for a 200 ton worm to pass over dripping spice and i must capture that falling spice and sell it elsewhere. Only in such a world could Ronald Raygun be right.
People underestimate the speed at which robots, computers and automation are displacing human workers. It is happening quite quickly and from areas that Americans usually do not think of as high tech. Spain is home to an extremely advanced strawberry picking machine. It can displace vast numbers of field workers. Taxi and truck drivers are about to be replaced. And the building trades are also on the verge of going without much human input.
I know the actions were criminal but I sort of admire the guy. It makes me wonder about human nature and it did take a lot of talent to do what he did. Somebody will make a movie out of this and we will hear from this guy again. With his talents he just has to keep on doing this stuff.
Sometimes cliques form for various reasons including a desire to get friends or family members hired into new openings or to simply create an illusion that workers in the clique are superior workers and they do that by targeting individuals. As these cliques often make false complaints to managers it can appear that the firm is the one holding back the victim. When loss of job or failure to get raises or promotions takes place the firm is often the one that pays in court. Management may never know the degree to which they have been steered into a precarious position. Worse yet a potential litigant can work with others to get hired and with cooperation of others create undeniable evidence that a firm is doing something that it simply did not do deliberately. For example you hire an applicant that unknown to you has a long time relationship with a trusted employee. That trusted employee is in place to affirm false claims by the new employee. Out of the blue there is a false witness claiming to have seen unwanted groping of the supposed victim. And when the victim throws a fit over the supposed molestation the company feels it has to dismiss her as the work place is not functional due her lashing out over the molestation, over and over again. So the gal works there for three months and ends up with twelve years pay due to law suits.
Constructing a wall to withstand a tsunami at the very least will be challenging and may in fact be impossible. And a 40 ft. wall may be as useless as teats on a bull. What would a fifty foot wave do to a 40 ft. tall wall? It is difficult enough to build a dam that will hold calm water but the speed and weight of water in a Tsunami is a whole different kettle of fish. Maybe tsunamis could be called home delivery for sushi.
There have been several passenger planes brought down by pilot suicides. For some it is simply depression but for others it is the old terrorism - religion game. You know how it is. Some nut rolls around in his bed having supposed revelations and messages from Allah and the next thing you know he's flying 200 passengers into the side of a mountain. There are times when a persons belief system is in itself a complete mental illness all wrapped up and ready to go boom.
Unlike all other translations of the Bible which contain statements such as "Judge not that the be not judged." there are lunatic christians whose Bible seems to read Judgement is not mine sayeth the Lord but judgement belongs to the people in order to abuse them and offend God, the Father. And their Bible must also say to try to harm darker skinned people in any way possible.
It does make me wonder how people can claim to be Christians while practicing hate and judging others all day, every day. These people might better be called Satan's little helpers.
Do you think it is reasonable for a cop who gets information that you have been in a bar for five hours stop you when you get in your car and do a drunk driving test? You and i both know that there is surely a better than 80% chance that a bar patron after five hours in a bar is unfit to drive. Now suppose a computer is used to notify a cop that you are starting to drive away from that bar? To me that seems like reasonable and effective use of police resources.
It is really quite a stretch of the imagination to think that a license plate contains any private information. And really it is not even a modern issue. In Virginia in the 1940s the city paid a bounty on a car found with an expired tag and the hunt started at midnight. People looking to get a reward would open garage doors into the wee hours and shine a light on the license plates. Think about it. Virginia actually allowed penetration of closed garages in the wee hours by civilians just to assure that everyone had purchased their license plate on time. In our case the garage was behind our home so they walked through our lawn or driveway into the back yard and raised and opened the garage door. And one might have that happen more than once in an evening as many people were eager to earn the bounties.
It is not just AI and robotics that threaten humans. Rapid changes due to technology absolutely will cause social and political chaos as nations are simply ignoring the issues and trying to apply old thought patterns to new issues. In the case of future shock it really is not so much a matter of new events but a matter of numerous new events striking all at once. For example when the buggy whip industry collapsed it hurt some workers and owners. And when automobiles came about the horse industry took a severe and lasting hit. But technologies like 3d printing will deal crushing blows across the board to many industries. Robotics and modern machine tooling will replace numerous highly skilled trades. The cable industry will virtually destroy teaching as a profession. Home building is already falling to automation. Usually we saw one or two industries placed in decline but now we see overwhelming numbers of industries shrinking to zero. Yet we can handle all of this if we are willing to adopt new ways of thinking. If we do not we will perish.
I'm in Florida and we use air conditioning almost 365 days a year. If a hurricane strikes there is usually no electricity for a few days or a few weeks. To shelter one person or four people requires large screen areas. Without lots of air circulation one could not spend ten minutes in this shelter day or night without being in a very heavy sweat. And one simply can not open the door as mosquitoes bloom under the wet, hot conditions. A tent made entirely of screen with a tarp large enough to cover it if rain hits would keep people a lot safer.
I wonder if major innovators are safe from the inevitable enemies they will make due to change. Tesla is probably seen as the great Satan by the auto industry and now we can add in the oil and gas industries and power industries, big coal and natural gas to people who are not exactly in love with Mr. Musk. This man deserves to be protected by the secret service as he is a national treasure and in my opinion he is at risk. There are many billions of dollars involved and we have to many people devoid of conscience in our society.
With the exception of the seriously handicapped all students should receive an academic education suitable for admission to one of the better universities. Those who are not able should be diverted into groups taught to function in the lesser trades. The problem is that failing to offer academic education to every able student in a way labels and limits them for life. Expectations should not limit academics. For example some rural counties do not offer even an algebra class in high school as it is assumed that the graduates will work in the fields or slaughter houses. There is no way that that is fair to young people whose goal might be to get the heck out of areas like that.
There is simply no way to allow people to flow into areas that are not capable of supporting the population. The notion of letting companies build and build and sell and sell is a disaster waiting to happen. Reducing the number of residents allowed to stay in the state and the amount of farming and industry allowed is a huge part of the solution. The idea that people are allowed to reproduce endlessly combined with capitalism is a group suicide pact.
As far as a solution that might have some impact the building of salt to fresh water conversion plants can provide quite a bit of water to the farmers and homes in California. The downside is that it will raise property taxes and state income taxes to a point that poorer people will be driven out of the state.
My state is forced to dump enormous amounts of water into the ocean as we have no way to store water from our frequent monsoon like rains. But all the while we have entire cities undermined due to water being extracted from the earth. Right this moment the core of engineers is dumping trillions of gallons of water from Lake Okeechobee into the ocean to ward off flooding expected in the spring rains. How wonderful it could be if we could sell that excess, fresh water to states that need it.
This situation is an example of an economy that has never had a base. It is also proof of a system that has been corrupted. The congress will never pass laws that would correct the problem in that one way or another the congressmen are on the take. For example we could pass a law that bans complex contracts. To enforce that law we simply put a rule into play that if challenged as being a complex contract and the challenge is upheld the complaining party must always win a complete recovery plus legal fees. We can also continue to tax companies that try to offshore divisions of their business. For example if GM wants to make all car seats in Mexico we can add an import tax and also fine them if they do not pay American minimum wages. Further we should allow only individuals to contribute to political campaigns and not corporations and we should cap individual contributions at $100.. Many things could be done to have a rational and just society but they will not be done due to capitalism corrupting the entire political system.
A smart insurance company would insist on data gathering devices in all of their insured cars. Do you really want to insure a person who frequently fails to use a seat belt? Or should you insure a person who frequently violates speed limits or runs red lights?
I had a driver's license at the age of 14 and had no problems at all. As a young person I had zero tickets and zero accidents. At 16 I was a Western Union motorcycle messenger working 40 hours a week in all weather and under frequently very dangerous conditions. And I still had no problems other than a chronic lack of sleep from working full time while going to school and having some academic recognition.
Underneath the driving issues rests the simple fact that we have segments of society that are worse then useless. Many of the teens these days will simply end up in drug rehabs, jails, prisons and mental wards, or welfare receivers. The question is what can we do to turn defective youth into something resembling productive citizens. It seems as though once a teen starts to go sour it is usually a one way street.
It seems that we have a group of people who just insist upon applying theories of morality to every little situation. We still have people protesting abortions for example. Yet none of the abortion protesters take into account what our population level would be like if we had not allowed abortions. Obviously the offspring would be a huge number and might have been such a great burden that our nation could not survive. The same thing can be said about subjects like the Civil War. Without that war we surely would have now had several hundred million extra Americans. War is not completely negative. Pregnancy is not completely positive. Weak minds latching onto an absolute position simply demonstrate the absurdity of modern life. Yet we have numerous pumpkin headed citizens that fixate on really stupid issues and just make their entire life all about pushing some supposedly moral platform. As far as the human genome goes we can store it and revert back to unedited DNA any time we like. It is simply a matter of not allowing people to reproduce who have had unwanted consequences from edited genes.
Car makers may not want to win such a suit. jack and jill with bob and phil went up the hill to catch a bowl of pills might be really hard to crack.
