There are many companies and industries that do not have a good reputation among workers for taking care of older or burned out employees. Unless it is a time of very limited job openings it means that younger workers will demand far higher starting wages and better raises to stay with a company. If a potential employee is not smart enough to insist upon fair pay and some very real assurance of doing well then you really do not want to hire him anyway. The old, vague promises of yesteryear will no longer work. One tactic an employee can use is to start a new job by casually asking how many people around him in the business are long time employees. If there are too many fairly new workers it may be time to leave before you even start.
If someone blocks a site wrongly due to thinking it is pornographic can't they be sued? Why is it that businesses are treated differently than people? I am quite certain that if i blocked a site like a local college that I would face all kinds of legal issues and might even do prison time. So what about the people that supply and use this blocking software?
All those genes make humans look like flunkies. And knowing a tiny bit about Darwin maybe we could take into account that a pine tree can easily outlive any human ever born. And pine trees tend to have a very long history of reproduction compared to humans. So maybe all the thinking, feeling and running about that humans do is simply proof of our inferiority. think about it. The pine tree needs water, sunshine, a few minerals and an atmosphere and that is about it. Humans need all kinds of things. I've never seen a tree shoot anyone, go mental, or rape other trees. Trees might enjoy making humans feel like idiots.
Actually prison is not supposed to have anything to do with punishment. Prison is meant to keep people away from society. Making it unpleasant simply insures that the inmate is more likely to be full of anger and more likely to commit worse crimes upon release. The real snag is that rehabilitation usually won't work and is very, very expensive. It is also a huge issue in hard times as convicts will live better than many poor people do every day. Prisons might be the worst of all examples of really bad management of any arm of government.
If the quality of life of the local people has been effected then financial compensation is in order. Can kids play in the creeks or eat fish caught locally? Are people worried about health issues fro the spill? Each and every one effected should be paid for the negatives put upon the area. I should have said paid large!
Health insurance alone is one good reason to hire all young workers. Any company that hires older employees or fails to fire them before they age may suffer serious insurance premium penalties. Then there are issues like time lost due to illness, doctor appointments etc.. Older employees may also have been exposed to some rotten employers and feel that dragging along is their right. A bright new star trying to shine bright is what employers want.
And in an unregulated industry how do you determine if your red rice yeast is authentic or the right strain? We can't even get real olive oil in grocery stores as most brands contain almost zero olive oil. So far the health food industry is a total scam with no assurance at all of any element of fairness or honesty.
Why in the world should we allow such trademark laws to exist. I am sort of an off white pinkish color. Should I trademark my skin color. Will US Customs burn all people who usurp my skin color?
With human reproduction as out of hand as it is we may need all those nasty bugs to eat. Malaria might actually help humanity by exterminating excess population of humans.
There is a real problem with trying any kind of openness or oversight in covert operations. The public is clueless in many areas and probably must remain so as a matter of public safety.
Try this as a thought experiment. Have our president pass a security act that requires all members of the public, the government or the military who have any knowledge of the death of JFK to come forward immediately under severe penalty of law. Then watch how many agencies, businesses and individuals fight that like wildfire. think of one good reason that JFK files are sealed for yet another 16 years. And when they are released we will see copies with all kinds of items covered with black markers.
For how many years could i buy an M1 rifle at my local gun store while it was still classified as top secret? Why is it that millions of soldiers were issued an M1 with 30 Cal. stamped on its barrel who never noticed that it was 30 caliber but knew it fired a 30-06 cartridge?
The catch is that massive data collection and observation allows all kinds of progress. Is it really so wrong that your car insurance company can tell how fast you drive and whether you leave bars late at night? Or how about a medical insurance or life insurance discount because it is clear that you eat a lot of green leafy vegetables and not Spam sandwiches for lunch? Or how about knowing where your wife and kids have really been all week? Or how about linking cancer rates to locations or habits or even knowing your DNA and how it will tolerate such behaviors? And for crime prevention and punishment it is hard to beat heavy duty surveillance.
The traditional internal combustion powered vehicle will be banned in all industrialized nations one way or another. In the US and Canada this will be difficult due to the great distances some must drive. But what use is a car or truck if it can only be run in rural areas? It is upon us and it must be done. That is why companies such as Tesla are so important are alternative vehicles such as bicycles. Those that think big oil can stop this had best think again.
We found out in the Great Depression that some small foreign nations suffering economic collapse could cause the US to have an economic breakdown. It also touched off WWII which was expensive and remains expensive even today.
But do note that when an economy simply vanishes the world does not stop turning. The Confederate States of America had a total economic collapse in 1865 and all Confederate currency became worthless. Debts were never repaid and the south cam e back from it all. Many nations vanish. Many economies vanish. Many banks and markets vanish and the world keeps right on running along. Yes there is human suffering when such things occur but then again we have plenty of human suffering when nothing collapses anyway. It is rather like the hand gun issue. Guns are seen as an issue when the wrong people get shot. Collapse of an economy really only threatens groups that are living well. there is a bit of a homeless camp down the way and an economic collapse would mean little to them as their own economy collapsed already.
Many people reach a point in life at which death is no longer an enemy but a welcome friend. Perhaps it is better never to hang on to that terrible point in life. Perhaps we could look towards the idea of finding ways to make end days enjoyable and concentrate more on premature death preventions. Once we can do those things extending life longer than a reasonable span would seem to then be a goal to establish. Imagine America with one hundred million Alzheimer victims with a greatly extended life span. What a nightmare that could be.
The best college students are also self educating students. In order to make best use of college training a few students have great histories of forcing all kinds of self education upon themselves. The great scholars can not be stopped. A kid who is a born scholar who is isolated in a tiny village with poor schools will still somehow find a way to learn. These are the personalities that we need the most as a nation.
The for profit colleges are suspicious to most people. There are so many gimmick type colleges out there that unless a degree is from a known and long standing, brick and mortar college employers probably see the degrees as nonsense. And frankly they usually are nonsense. And even if the for profit school is sort of real they are much like your local doughnut shop. They want you there a lot! In other words if you are picking a kid's pocket you simply make sure that he is happy and give him good grades no matter how dumb he is. Treat him nice and let him think he is being educated and you can pick that pocket for years to come.
College should be limited to those who love academic pursuits, love studying and are somewhat willing to suffer to learn. College is not a trade school and is not designed to be a path to employment.
If gravity waves have actually been detected then we should get data on frequency and variations in intensity if any exist. I think they are simply using geek speak to say that they now have a capacity to detect even less energetic events or isolate specific events of small intensity. They have not detected any actual wave. Isn't it a stretch to think that gravity travels in waves or exists in standing waves? Maybe it simply exists and is all about us and has no movement at all.
Gravity may simply be a displacement of space according to the density of the object that causes the displacement. How much gravity can be stuffed into a singularity?
Is anyone actually dumb enough to believe that car dealerships would band together to protect the public from a new brand? Just what status do car dealerships have to complain about sales by another organisation? And why are our laws so useless that Tesla can not sue these dealers into the dark ages along with the state of New Jersey for using such tactics to try to sabotage a new company?
Suburbia has issues in which self raised crops really can help. In the cities locally grown food can do all sorts of good things. Often the food must be grown indoors and the production can be amazing. But in addition to the huge bennefits that one might get in the suburbs in the cities things like control of violence can relate to farming. When each neighborhood has a distinct boundary and limited entrance and exit points things like gang activity tend to fall off completely. Locals begin to know who belongs and who is a stranger. Psychological stress is reduced. Drive by shootings vanish as the neighborhood can be completely sealed off at the drop of a hat. Pollution is reduced as far less transportation is involved in supplying food. Even things like the heat island effect can be reduced by incorporating food production within an urban area. Jobs that are created can be filled by local people reducing the illegal immigration issues. Indoor fish farming can supply healthy and tasty protein for the public.
The list is endless. We should have been doing this for decades. We can even produce wind and solar energy for the community from the buildings used for vertical farming. And you can bet your last penny that just like auto companies are trying to keep Tesla from doing something new the powers that be will do all that they can to cripple new designs and implementations of local farming communities.
Parents who maybe should not be parents in the first place want to abandon the responsibility of being at hand with their children. To top it off they apparently share passwords and maybe credit cards with their kids. Just how is that Google's fault? Really it boild down to stupid parents who probably do not have sufficient money to have kids in the first place. If both mom and dad work full time and are too beat up at the end of the day to raise their kids whose fault is that?
It is as if we must tolerate people having babies who are too thoughtless to realise that one full time parent watching over the kids night and day is the minimum for having kids.
Think of all the harm secrecy has done throughout history. Although I as well as almost everyone else sort of hate being spied upon there really is a vast upside to knowing what people are up to. My real concern is that some groups and classes have more privilege to spy than does the man on the street. That can get dangerous in a hurry. At the vey least we should have the same privileges as any corporation and maybe the citizen should have the same ability as government to spy back at government. I expect my military to have sufficient power to never have to be concerned about what knowledge an enemy gains. I feel that our military should be like Babe Ruth pointing at the fence showing where the home run would be hit before the pitch is thrown. Are our weapons so inadequate that other nations could build them even if we handed them the blue prints and specs? Are we so weak that we must be concerned with spy vs. spy activities?
By interefering with the sales of Tesla Motors these dealerships are trying to restrain trade. A good judge and jury might award a ton of money to Tesla if any justice occurs.
This is a form of evidence that perhaps we need to completely shut down the big three as they obviously intend to continue to use unfair and illegal business practices.
As a person we all must decide whether we support crime or not. Restraint of trade is criminal. Therefore the traditional dealerships are public enemies and should be treated as such.
I am not so sure that game theory applies so simply to crime. It is obvious that we can not catch a criminal every time he commits a crime. So the bad guy steals $100. If we simply apply a punishment that regains the lost $100 we will drown in crime. Obvioulsy the criminal would reason that he should steal $100 over and over again as he would only be punished for the ones that were detected and traced back to him and therefore a life of crime would be quite lucrative, So we obvioulsy want punishment for one incident that is stunning enough to really make the criminal think about the risk. But what most people fail to understand is that the punishment is not all about the particular criminal. We want everyone who knows about the criminal to gasp when they hear the sentence for stealing that $100. Maybe 100 people will know about that criminal doing 30 years for one incident of stealing that $100. Those 100 people get a message that they sure as heck never want to steal money.
Why does this not work so well in regards to illegal drug use? It is simple. The idea that youth, second chances, etc. must all be applied allows a drug user to get ever deeper into drug use until the system finally drops a big rock on their heads. Back in the bad old days getting caught with a tiny bit of dope would mean all hell breaking lose on the very first offense. People would not have anything to do with dope as a consequence. Florida had one boy's detention facility that "disciplined" young boys to death, They
are still finding the corpses. My generation knew not to get sent to Marianna. We knew that second chances did not take place and that one could be carted off to such a place for a simple burglary or possession of one joint. Obvioulsy such punishments were cruel and barbaric. The catch is that failing to have such horrors seems to be even worse when we look at the broken and destroyed lives of so many of our young people who do not fear getting caught much at all.
There are many companies and industries that do not have a good reputation among workers for taking care of older or burned out employees.
