I attended the Device Driver session at Warpstock, presented by Oliver Stein of IBM Germany. Firewire support for hard drives is coming soon. Also an OS/2 port of ALSA - think SDD for Audio.

My short Warpstock Report is available in the OS/2 forum at IWETHEY, where later down in the thread is information on a wireless NIC with OS/2 drivers :-)

A lot of the slashdot crowd seems to be Linux or else. What few OS/2 articles I've seen tend to follow the normal windows media bias - ie the annual OS/2 is dead... really... we mean it this time article.

I'd have given you a list, but the slashdot search breaks OS/2 down to OS 2 and won't return any results because it's now only indexing words 4 characters or longer...

Not sure when it's due out, but a google search yeilds a list price of $1049. Not bad - that's what my SVHS deck ran me way back when(late 80s?).

It's going to hook up via firewire - which my set doesn't have. I've heard there will be a plug-in board for the set though which adds the firewire port(s).

  7. HD HBO and Showtime are sweet on HDTV On Your PC And Hard Drive · · Score: 2
I just purchased a 65" HDTV, a Mitsubishi WS65908. Time Warner cable in Houston currently carries 9 HD feeds, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, 2 HBOs and 2 Showtimes.

Pretty much all of the movies on HBO are in HD format. The quality is so good it's like being at a movie theater. Showtime is hit-or-mis on the movies. Both HBO and Showtime have their own series, such as The Sopranos and Leap Years, which are broadcast in high def. I just recently started watching The Sopranos(I didn't have the HBO package until I got my HDTV) and have become hooked - it's an excellent show.

Last night's Disney movie on ABC was Toy Story in HD. Next week will be Toy Story 2. A couple weeks ago they showed A Bugs Life.

PBS has been showing ONLY HD shows on their HD channel - shows on nature, travel, exporation. The travel shows through Europe have been really slick, the detail shown in HD of artwork and buildings is phenominal.

Non-letterboxed DVDs also look great on a HDTV. Any movie that's labeled Anamorphic or Enhanced for Widescreen has 33% more detail when shown on an HDTV. The movie is recorded on the DVD without the black bars. The DVD player will throw out every 4th scan line of the movie on a traditional set and add the letter box bars. See The Ultimate Guide to Anamorphic Widescreen DVD for some good info on anamorphic DVDs.

OS/2's problem was M$s restrictive practices with the OEMs. ie - Compaq felt strongly enough about running OS/2 on their systems that they published a white paper on why their's where The Premier OS/2 Platform, and yet they never offered it preloaded for fear of M$ retaliation.

Because of M$'s lock on the OEMs, you had to pay "the full price" for OS/2. The price for Windows is not immediatly obvious because it was rolled into the cost of the system. Sadly, those of us who chose OS/2 still had to pay Microsoft for Windows(via system purchase) as well as pay for OS/2. The Microsoft Tax was the driving force behind my learning to build my second(and later) systems. Even then, I still had to pay the M$ Tax when I bought a laptop - rather hard to build one of those from scratch.

  22. *My* grandparents are running Linux on The Linux Desktop Obituary · · Score: 3
Both sets of my grandparents, as well as one of my aunts & uncles, are running Linux.

They were using the Netpliance iopener for email to inexpensively keep in contact with family and friends. Netpliance had some major financial problems and discontinued the 800 number support, which left my relatives high-and-dry after they became hooked on email.

I've modified their iopeners to run Linux. I set them up with Blackbox as the window manager because the iopener is rather underpowered. The iopener's function keys have iconic labels instead of F1-F12: a weather key with a cloud on it, a news key with a newspaper on it, etc, so I've configured bbkeys to run Netscape and pass the appropriate command line arguements to display the correct URL or email option. (I would have used Mozilla, but it's email support was too slow - 20 seconds to display an email vs 2 seconds in netscape).

Last year my mom traveled the country visiting relatives with her laptop and scanner and digitized all the family photos she could lay her hands on. So, as an added bonus, the iopener is also an electronic picture album and runs CHBG as a screensaver when the system is idle. The grandparents really love this feature.

Sure, I could have done this using Windows, but the non-upgrade price of Windows(since the iopener's originally ran QNX) would have been about twice the cost of the hardware I purchased to convert the iopeners.

I always thought that was odd that they still sold OS/2, until it hit me - by allowing Egghead to have OS/2 on the shelf w/out any other OS/2 software, Microsoft was able to create the impression that no 3rd party OS/2 software existed.
