To combat the battery issue, I use the rechargable battery pack(it clips onto your belt). Of course, I've not used it in a while, so I suspect it won't hold a charge anymore.

I appreciate your follow-up. That was a much better response than the people nitpicking over a misspelled word, or the use of cars vs. trains for transportation. That's another item - due to the vastness of the USA, mass transit is not economically feasible for most of our country - the population density is not high enough.

One of the "US Arrogances" I've always heard is that we American's are arrogant because we don't learn other languages.

The reality of life in America seems to escape non-Americans. Most people I went to school with learned another language(for example, ich kann deutsch). However, unlike people in other countries, it's quite far/expensive for us to travel someplace where English is not the primary language. Thus, we're unable to practice and maintain any form of fluency.

I'd spoken with a German about this once in the late 80's(he used to use the internet to get to a modem in Houston to call my BBS). He had mentioned the "language arrogance" so I asked him how long it took to him to travel to another country where German was not the language - a mear 3 hour drive, and another 3 hours on top of that to get to where a 3rd language was required.

Contrast that to America. I live in Houston. To drive to Mexico would take about 7 hours. To drive to Canada would take close to 30 hours. Going west to San Francisco would take 32 hours, and going East to New York would take 27 hours. English is the primary language everywhere within this driving range.

  19. There's loss in transmission on Dark City, San Francisco? · · Score: 2
Energy is lost as it's transmitted over the powerlines. The further it's transmitted, the greater the loss. Because of this, the pollution/useable-energy ratio increases as CA brings in power from other states.

Therefore, because CA is taking their power from other states (to charge their "green cars", etc), they are just dumping their pollution problem onto other states to deal with. And now that they have the Feds invovled, the other states power plants MUST give them power.

California is requiring a certain percentage of all cars sold to be "non-polluting"(what a joke - the power's got to be generated SOMEWHERE - so there WILL BE pollution) which has been taken to mean electric cars.

Auto makers will be heavily fined if they don't meet the minimum percentage; however, I find it hard to believe that people are going to run out to buy electric cars if they won't be able to charge them whenever they need to(which will be quite often due to the limited range).

  21. Widescreen NTSC does exist on "D-VHS": Will it replace DVD? · · Score: 2
In the early 90's the Incredible Universe store in Houston had 2 different wide screen TV sets(direct view - not projection). I talked to the salesman about them and found out that they didn't sell very well. Probably due (at the time) to lack of 16:9 material to show on them.

The BestBuy stores here currently have a wide screen NTSC TV set up to show off DVDs and surround sound. I don't know if the set is for sale from Best Buy, but the fact that they have one means it can be purchased somewhere.

A quick hit at Google turned up another widescreen set - the Sony KP-W41MH11 - of course at $3400 you're better off buying an HDTV widescreen. It's probably that much because it supports PAL, SECAM and NTSC.

Now you can get one for under $100 that you can wear on your hip while you jog. This didn't happen overnight, and likewise the price drop of HDTV won't happen overnight. Give HDTV a few more more years to come down in price before you write it off.
