April Fools Wrap Up

I think it's little escapades like this that show us Rob Malda is all about Slashdot just for his personal enjoyment. Maybe that was acceptable when it ran on a Multia in his college dorm room, but now he has to answer to shareholders. Out of everyone I know that reads/., not even one person enjoyed the April Fools "jokes" that ran all over the site. Sure, Rob got to post a few "stories", but he seems to be the only one laughing. Maybe if we're lucky this will be the last year we'll have to subscribe to Taco's signature brand of humor. I enjoy Rob Malda's comedic stylings about as much as I enjoy his frequent spelling and grammar mistakes.
Attention: This isn't funny at all! This isn't tounge in cheek humor, this is no humor at all. These April Fools "jokes" are pathetic attempts at nerdish humor. Let me take this opportunity to point out that Rob Malda's humor skills are giving his spelling and grammar skills a run for the money!
I've recently noticed a trend:/. doesn't really post any interesting news stories anymore. I don't know if this is due to recent events being slowish or whatever, but the quality of the site has been ESPECIALLY bad. I know/. jumped the shark a long time ago, but on the ski slope of quality, we're at some sort of "interest canyon" where/. sucks more than ever. Has anyone else noticed/.'s suckage over the past two weeks?
What they really should do, is all riots could be simulated by a computer. The computer would choose 'fatalities' in the riot, and then the people chosen could report to disintegration chambers. Certainly this is a good solution.
This article sure does use a lot of bold words. I'm glad the author was very enthuastic in this article about browsers, but is this level of boldness really prudent? You be the judge!
Well, Michael doesn't really use Microsoft Windows. Well, except for playing Quake 3. Oh yeah, and for writing documents in MS Word. And for watching DVD's. And for using Internet Explorer. Michael and the whole Slashdot NEVER use Windows. Believe me, I know.
Don't forget kids: those snazzy Linksys routers you bought will fall under this stipulation too! It's not just the retards with Linux boxes getting nailed, it's EVERYONE with any form of link duplication. Basically, if you have 2 boxes and pay for 1 to be connected THEY WANT YOUR ASS.
I'm considering which Desktop Enviornment to install on my new Slackware box, and I'm wondering if someone could post a non-biased comparision between KDE and GNOME. Which do you think is better in terms of speed, efficiency, usability, etc?
Well, Linux users seem to prefer PalmOS by engineering standards. For instance, they love the long battery life and the simple elegance of PalmOS, not to mention the fact that it's all done on a ~33 mHz chip. They fail to appreciate the value of PocketPC's advances, because they see it as just another bloated Windows platform. Sure, from an engineering standpoint, PalmOS is more efficient and well designed and WinCE just has a lot of hardware behind it to make it look better, but Linux users hate that.
Also, you can EMULATE a PalmOS machine on MacOS X faster than on any other platform, due to the Altivec unit on the processor. So, don't bother buying a Clie, just skip right to a Mac running OS X.
The reason Handspring/Palm are having so much trouble is, in fact, the PocketPC. Now, you can pooh-pooh them all you want, say WinCE is bloated, the machines are overpowered, they chew through battery like nobody's business, whatever. The FACT is, when you sit down a person in front of a machine running PalmOS and a machine running WinCE, the WinCE machine is IMMEDIATELY more impressive. People see PocketWord and PocketExcel. Don't dismiss the value of name brand recognition. Even the fact that the machines run Windows make them less intimidating to people. If you grab a hold of a WinCE machine, immediately you are right at home with a Start button, etc. On PalmOS, you have to familiarize yourself with the device, strange interface, Graffiti. I'm not saying PalmOS doesn't have its spot, I'm just saying a niche won't support enough users for a company to stay afloat. A long used comparision is Windows : Linux:: WinCE : PalmOS. Sure, anyone that REALLY knows what they're doing will have a Palm, but that ratio must be like 1/100, which is NOT enough to keep a whole company alive. Unless Palm/Handspring pack more features into their offerings, they are going to go under, and in a big way. Never underestimate the value of shiny things.

Userfriendly is about as funny as a case of herpes.

You're not getting it. The AVERAGE consumer does not THINK about purchases.

Ask Slashdot: I'm morbidly obese and unable to leave the house! What should I do?
