I first came across this idea while reading "The Cuckoos's Egg" in junior high school. I'd like to say that I thought it was an excellent book, the entire story was very exciting to me. I enjoyed the cloak and dagger senario placed in the computer world.
Not much to really say, but that the books grabs you (or me at least) and is a quick read. Very enthralling, just watching the cat and mouse game play out between the cracker and the other guy.
...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.
Technically Apple's GUI is nothing like Xerox's. They got the idea for a GUI there, but the WIMP enviornment created at their labs is an all Apple affair.
Mircosoft didn't just rip off the GUI idea, they stole the interface for it too.
Next time before spouting off take a look at your sources? Have you actually seen a working interface from one of those research boxen at Xerox. Sounds like a no... ...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.
I don't know if I am %100 correct here, but back in the winter of '96 to '97. I had a copy of Popular Science that mentioned NASA new "Smaller, Faster, Cheaper" missions, in it there was obviously and article on the NEAR mission.
Well my entire thought was, that I remember reading that for part of the cheaper aspect on that mission for the main computer they used, an Apple PowerMac 9500/9600 or major parts from one.
This would totally go against that other story that talks about the first webserver and Macintosh computer in space. Sorry I couldn't find the recent link

This rumor is mostly based on the one that they will be replacing their trackpads (in their powerbooks) with handwriting regonition able pads. People will be able to use the track pad for more than just a mouse pointer, and this could also show signs for their sixth slot. Any sort of portable 'pad' device would be able to use this technology.
It seems idiotic to replace the keyboard. ...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.

I prefered the original Star Wars series due to the ceativity involved.
I thought the actual 'sci-fi' portion was better looking due to the actual physical models projecting actual shadows over the bumps and curves of the ship, other than the computer generated models which appear flat. The scenery has no depth to it either...
Sorry Lucas, but computers can do everything.... Yet....

Isn't there suppose to be an issue with the PowerPC 750 that doesn't allow for multi proccessing. The PowerPC 7400 (G4) does.
I remember trying asking Daystar about multiple G3 and they said it couldn't be done due to something involving the L2 Cache.
It looks like these boards can induvidually send the processes out to the chips. Unlike the actual Dual G4 boards from PowerLogix. ...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.

The reason it is so difficult to upgrade an iMac CPU is the Apple created a daughterbaord with the CPU, RAM slot, and proprietary ROM chip.
The main reason it took this long is because the manufactures had to figure out a way to create a card that still uses the proprietary ROM code.
If it was that simple as swaping ZIF G3s, I would have done that a long time ago.

I'm sorry but Powerlogix doesn't do that with the daughter cards, you are thinking of Newer Technologies. They do that with the daughter cards, this post is incorrect. PowerLogix pulls the ROM off the original board and flashes it onto their upgrade board.
CPU upgrades for the iMac have been around for a long time, the one from Powerlogix is actually semi-normal, instead of mailing off your daughter baord to be used in another upgrade.
...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.
I don't know where you guys get your mac info but it is about the oldest in the world. If I knew the slashdot community was interested in this I would have submitted it a long time ago.
And F.Y.I. there are two vendors of iMac upgrades the other one is Newer Technologies.
Except the way Newer Tech does is buy your old CPU/ROM combo card and replace the CPU.
Powerlogix, My favorite Mac Upgrade company, has figured out how to pull the ROM and place it on the hard drive and then when you install the new CPU it will flash it into the one on their chip. Pretty sweet idea if I do say so myself.

"In order to view them (DVDs) we must decrypt them. If we can decrypt them, we can rip them."
They aren't going to be able to put up a huge fight, piracy has always existed, it's now just giving us better quality stolen media than the good ol' analog format.

Does anyone know how much bandwidth can be achieved between the Shuttle and earth, you could conrtol this from a control center.
I was mostly thinking about the interface, that would be so cool because if you were floating and controling a VR unit that was floating it would probably be pretty easy.
Most VR units suck becuase you have outside forces that don't go with what you are looking at.(in my experiance at Epcot and such.)

We have to do something about this. This is the first article I have seen in years relating to what I have been griping about. It's a great article, but what is going to happen about it?
I believe we need to form together and get things changed or create another nationwide network. Get a bunch of us to form a utility company and employ thousands across the US, we'll use our won resources and create a new free network.
...and I'm not sure we should trust this Kyle Sagan either.
What I would like to see happen is where you share connections to each other. Like it used to be. I want to be able to have the power that if I provided the hardware and everything on my end that 'they' would let me hook into the internet directly. Building your own network, if you have enough resources you should be able to have IPs and start your own portion of the internet. I don't want a few companies to control is all.

On what I was trying to say can simply be summed up as: I pay for my portion of the internet, you pay for your portion.
