Do all features need to be included in the language, or is an addon a possibility? C++ has all but one. Garbage collection, but that can be found in a 3rd-party library. Java lacks only operator overloading, which isn't really necessary. It is purely syntactic sugar. I cannot speak for the other languages, as I have little experience in those areas. You perhaps should have your boss prioritize the requirements, and pick the one that most meets the goals.

Forking is definitely not the issue. The issue is a fork with the MySQL name. That is not Ok. MySQL AB has the trademark on MySQL, and therefore, a fork cannot use it.
What's cool is I am currently reading Green Mars, the second in the trilogy from Kim Stanley Robinson, and therein he writes about the Martian space elevator. The biggest problem faced is who controls it? The country that builds this thing will have an ENORMOUS advantage over every other nation.
Another thing to consider is the safety. If you build this thing, and it collapses, it could theoretically tear the earth in 2.
All you have to do is run procmail. procmail supports writing to all of the popular mailbox formats. So, if your mailer doesn't support a particular format, use procmail to convert it.
Actually, I remember Linus saying something about drivers not being considered a derived work. You make calls into the kernel, but are not really LINKING with the kernel. He said that this exception has to be made for closed-source drivers. Closed-source drivers are not illegal, we just don't like to see them.
I still think the BeamIT software was not a copyright infringement. How can it be an infringement if I can listen to only things that I own? They are just adding value to my CDs, for no cost to me. How does that infringe on a copyright? They are like my own radio station. Radio stations don't infringe on copyright. but I digress....
This is clearly a hoax. The page graphics are crap. There are non-existant links. The disclaimer at the bottom says that there is confidential stuff on the site. Who puts confidential info on a web site? Make a judgement call next time. Is it really worth it? Maybe put a disclaimer that you think the site is bogus? That way we know when to flame the poster.
This leagalize does give them a leg to stand on. It's a matter of whether a court of law will find it enforcable. I guess it's a lot like the EULA. As long as Radio Shack employees aren't forcing anyone to sign an agreement, I think this license is unenforcable.

IANAL, but the way I see it, if you never install their Windoze software, then you never actually accept the license agreement. AND, even if you do, the Windoze License only mentions the software, NOT the Scanner itself. This would never hold up in a real court of law, IMHO.
I think you are missing the point. Yes, they are time-limited by the technology they contain. What these people are trying to accomplish is a text that is limited to, say, 6 months. You get to use it for a semester, then it self-destructs. Thereby, causing you to either renew the 'license', or just give up on that particular text.

You cannot pit GIMP vs Coreldraw. They don't do the same thing. I will say that is has been a long time since I've looked at CD, but from what I remember, it is a Vector package. My brother uses 2 things to do his job (he is a graphic designer): Photoshop, and Freehand. 2 programs dealing with graphics, but they both do very different things. Just remember that.
The GIMP and CorelDraw are 2 different animals. One is a bitmap manipulation program, while the other is a vector manipulation program. They are both good at what they do, but neither can be as good as the other.
Doesn't anyone else think the Dev tools also need to be separate from the OS? That's how Microsoft was able to control the Windows compiler market, and push Borland/Inprise right out. You couldn't build Windows 95 applications without using Visual C++. It SUCKED when Win95 came out. It wasn't until they had a stranglehold on the compiler market that they actually put anything into it.
Now they have every Windoze developer by the 'nards. They keep putting out bullshit upgrades, just to make a buck, and the only thing they add to it is a new toolbar. Sheesh.
The New York Times article is very informative. I do think that some of the demands of the plaintifs were a little too far, but those that were, could have easily been striken. Microsoft is still playing the "It's my football. I'm going home." game.
I didn't realize that Micro$oft used the tactic of raising the price of older OS's releases to foster upgrades. That's a new one to me.
And for you people who think breaking up Micro$oft is a good thing, think again. You'll get Bill Gates getting richer, and more of them to fight. Of course, then we'll have them back in court for colusion. Anyway, enough of this mindless rambling...
I think we could legally create some VFS's that have RedHat/Caldera/SuSE/FreeBSD/Mandrake/whatever distro is your favorite now, and distribute them on the net. Sounds like a great idea!
Hotline? This type of file sharing system has been around for quite some time. It's amazing how journalists do NO research, and say things like "It's the first of its kind!", and don't even bother to verify that.

One thing to remember is that 3COM can probably bail it out. Either buying it back, or giving it some heavy investment. It's not over yet...

I think Eazel is doing fine work. I have installed Nautilus on my desktop and my laptop, and it is DEFINITELY the way to go.
