  1. He never was making a VR port. on Minecraft Creator Halts Plans For Oculus Version Following Facebook Acquisition · · Score: 4, Interesting

One thing to realize is that Notch really never had any plans of making a VR port of Minecraft. In the past, he has stated that because of the JAVA technology used in Minecraft, it was too difficult to do it right, and they were having a problem making the UI work. They weren't very thrilled with the way the Minecrift mod did it, and wanted to do it better, but it just wasn't possible.

(In fact, the Minecrift mod doesn't even work with anything higher than 1.6, which means you can only use it in singleplayer or on servers that never upgraded. This is because of how much things have changed in the code between 1.6 and 1.7.)

So, Notch actually abandoned the effort sometime last year.

Last year: "We aren't making a Rift port because it's just too difficult with our current codebase."
Yesterday: "We aren't making a Rift port because Facebook."

To me, it sounds like a convenient excuse to cover up the fact that their codebase is really messy and can't do as much as they wish it could. We can blame it on Zuck now!

  7. The Xbox 360 Does Not Do Offline Updates on $2,000 Bounty For Open Source Xbox Kinect Drivers · · Score: 1

Actually it's the PS3 that has offline updates and downloads, and even then, only when you buy the Playstation Plus service and activate the feature as it's disabled by default. (And, it only downloads the update, you still have to update it yourself.) The Wii checks for "messages" but does not download or update anything unless you're there at the machine. The Xbox 360 does not wake up to install or download things, it does it when you log into Xbox LIVE.

Sorry for bringing facts into your rant, I know that's not what you're supposed to do on teh intarwebs. But it might be interesting information for someone who doesn't know anything about the wake up features of the current gen consoles.

They did not outright say "hey this is prerendered CG" but they DID state that this was "true cinematics" and that it was animation.

They were well aware of it and did a poor job of communicating it to viewers. I can tell how most people would have missed it.

  13. Re:Oh, my personal irony. on Will Twitter Join Podcasting on the 'Net Sidelines'? · · Score: 2, Informative

While I can't control how other people use Twitter, I personally do not have it sending me emails, IM's, texts, or anything else. The only way I can see what people are saying on Twitter is by actually going to the website. This is why I don't see why I'm "spamming people via Twitter" when I write a message on it. To me it's no different than reading Slashdot.

Having Twitter "invade your life" is 100% an opt-in experience. I never opted-in, so I don't feel like it's invading my life.

  14. Oh, my personal irony. on Will Twitter Join Podcasting on the 'Net Sidelines'? · · Score: 1

So I guess it's ironic that I use Twitter to keep in contact with my fellow podcasters as a whole. Two failed technologies, married into one!

Honestly, I like to use it because it's like I can say something to all of these other podcasters in other communities without spamming their email box. Yes, if what I have to say takes more than, say, 280 characters (two tweets) then I will either use email or just call them. But for short bursts, I love it.

I think that the concept of Twitter is simple enough that it will never go away, but the hype may die down soon enough. Much like how podcasting hasn't gone away, it's hype just died down.

The way they portrayed the games were both exciting and informative to those of us that knew the games. The commentators they had knew the games and were able to provide insight. They ran a good vignette of WoW terminology for the WoW section, and even popped up definitions for terms that people may not know.

  21. Re:Covers? on Partial Guitar Hero II Setlist · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually, I was more talking about how they needed to seperate the instruments and break them down note by note so they could be used during gameplay - when you miss a note, that note doesn't get played, or if you hit it just a little bit late, it plays a little bit late. Most original recordings don't break it down like that. But I'm sure they COULD have edited the original recordings to strip just about everything out if they had the master tracks.

But pretty much I heard that many of the original artists refused to "stoop to the level of a video game" (that's why there's no AC/DC songs even covered in the original, for instance) but now that the game is a successful franchise, they're more willing to do the work needed.

  23. Re:Covers? on Partial Guitar Hero II Setlist · · Score: 4, Interesting

From what I read, there's IS some interest by the original artists of the more recent bands to go into the studio and lay down the actual GH-ready tracks themselves, rather than having WaveGroup do it. Because of the way they made the game, they can't just use the original recording. However, since MTV is now partnered with them and the first game sold so well, I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the bands made good on their wish to come in and do their own version.

Granted, we're not talking the groups like Rush (although I would LOVE to have them come in and do it) but rather Franz Ferdinand, etc...

(Note: None of this is confirmed or anything.)

  24. The difference between this and The Sims 2 is... on ESRB Changes Oblivion's Rating to 'Mature' · · Score: 1, Interesting

There are several comments here wondering what's so different in this case, and rather than spam reply to all I'd just put my thoughts here.

The difference here is that the 3D model of the nude avatar is actually included on the disc. It's the same crap as Hot Coffee - it was created by the developer and shipped on the disc, but nothing was pointing to it. So a modder can go in and point to it.

Not saying I agree with this at all, just pointing out that this isn't your typical "nude patch" where someone creates a 3D Model of a nude Lara Croft and replaces the game model with the nude one. The modder would just replace the 3D Model in the game with another 3D Model in the game that just happens to be topless.

  25. Re:What's so great about Guitar Hero? on Guitar Hero II Announced · · Score: 3, Insightful

    What's so special?

It was actually released in the US and contained a large list of songs people in the US recognized. Two things Konami never did.

I love all my Bemani games, don't get me wrong (I've spent thousands of dollars importing IIDX, Pop'n, and Drummania) but Red Octane and Harmonix did what Konami wouldn't do. Konami is very dead set on their Japanese roots, and most people won't play guitar games with songs they don't recognize here in the US.

So, the difference is...Guitar Hero is marketed towards Americans. Guitar Freaks is marketed towards Japanese. That's not to say Americans wouldn't enjoy Guitar Freaks, but that's not their target audience. Especially since I don't believe Guitar Freaks ever got any release outside of Japan.
