No, binary only servers are BAD. Open-source drivers are GOOD.
If we start compromising ideals just for 3d drivers, where do we start next? "Oh, that's fine, binary only drivers for XXXX scsi card, it's better than nothing!" Is it though, how can you gaurantee the quality of that driver? How can you improve it, how can you fix bugs? Well, even if YOU can't, the source is still important because someone else WILL.
Looks to me like you are a simple 'Anything but Microsoft' person, which is imho, the wrong reason to run linux. Linux is great due to it's openness, once you start taking that openness away it becomes just that much worse.
You are the fucking hypocrite, you say you wont accept binary kernel mods but you do acept binary only 3d drivers. YOU are the one with double standards.
Glide sucks because it is proprietary and only supports 3dfx cards. I could care less about the actual API, it's non-free and that is all I need to know.
Where do you people get off claiming how smart these two guys were? I have seen no evidence of this. They were picked on, yes, who says its cause they were smart though? Maybe they didn't believe in deodorant, it doesnt matter, they are just a couple of psychos who couldnt handle the pressure.
I feel sorry for everyone that is persecuted, but sitting around feeling sorry for yourself is not going to accomplish anything. If someone spits on you, pick a chair up and crack it over their skull. They will think twice about trying it again. If you let them do it they will just continue. Problems dont go away by ignoring them.
99% of the comments here are people complaining about being beat up. Well, what are you doing about? Its time to take action. Not by shooting innocent people, but by standing up for yourself.
Reminds me of a star trek book I read once, The Trellesane Confrontation or something, where a race of people thought the enemy would go away if they didnt fight back. Well, life doesn't work that way.
I'm sorry but binary-only can never be a good thing. I dont care if it is the most competitive market in the world, you *cannot* gain enough information from reading specs that you would be able to reverse engineer the silicon on the chip. It's just corporate paranoia.
If someone released specs they would gain more in users than they would lose by giving out the specs.
This is going to start a bad trend, when you people get all excited about *binary-only* drivers you are taking away what sets linux apart from the rest. By supporting them you are telling other hardware vendors that they dont have to release specs, crappy no-source sulutions are not good enough.
You are making a huge mistake by supporting crap like this.
We have a fully functional GLX driver for the MGA-G200, it won't be complete until Precision Insight releases their Direct Rendering infrastructure some time in June. Right now mos windowed GL apps run *MUCH* faster, quake2 even runs but has poor performance that will be fixed with PI's driver architecture.
I agree totally, The TNT support will be binary-only, which means Redhat probably won't even distribute it, if they stick to the GPL that is. It will be interesting to see what they do. Not that I actually care about redhat... binary-only drivers are not good, if anything they are bad because they decrease the incentive to create a free driver.
However Matrox has done the right thing and released specs, we have made significant progress on the glx driver for the G200. See the following url:
Are you retarded? QT is not compatible with the GPL, even the new license. Therefore they violate copyrights when they take other people's GPLed code and link it with QT. The cant even add an exception clause because it is not their copyright to change.
Good one, windows update only updates software that comes directly from microsoft. and it runs like shit also. apt-get upgrades every single piece of software on your machine. No other operating system in the world can do this becuase as far as I know debian is the only one that tries to include *everything*.
Thats the problem! They cant just switch licenses like that, they didnt write all the code themselves. Some of that is from authors who released their work under the GPL and dont want the license changed. They will have to rewrite those parts themselves.
yeah im a prick, but so what? I was speaking from a personal point of view and in no way represented debian. I guess I should have changed my email address before posting.
I apologe to all the other debian developers for making debian as a whole look bad.
Yeah I think most of us here will agree with you. But I dont think the "linux community" is their real target, they are trying to make it easy for windows users to switch to linux.
Maybe once they cut their teeth on corel's distro newbies will be able to switch to a real distribution.
that you couldn't be any more wrong.
g 200-dev
Currently, there are drivers for the G200 in development. And guess what, we are proving you wrong.
http://lists.openprojects.net/mailman/listinfo/
Matrox has provided far more for the linux communinity than 3dfx has.... Open Specifications and GL drivers for the G200 are in development right now.
There are some issues of them not releasing the docs on the geometry processor but that issues is going to be resolved sometime soon...
Who gives a damn about open ideas if they are contrary to open-source? Source comes before ideas.
You need to get your priorities straight.
binary only drivers work? where the hell are you getting your information? the sblive modules only work with 2.2.5, I hardly call that "works".

If you call not accepting closed-source proprietary drivers being closed-minded then I guess I am guilty.
Exactly, these people advocating binary-only drivers are obviously not coders, or if they are they don't understand the importance of having source.
You know, linux wouldn't be here today if it wasn't free. Get a clue.
Glide sucks because it is proprietary and only supports 3dfx cards. I could care less about the actual API, it's non-free and that is all I need to know.
If anything will lead to the downfall of Linux, it will be people like you.
You know, I don't think the kernel needs to be GPL'ed, Linux would rule if it was a proprietary system! Oh wait, not it wouldn't.
Would you use a binary-only kernel? If not, why would you accept a binary-only video driver? Sounds like a double standard to me.
Umm, NT is a complete OS, not just a kernel.
NOw, if a *DISTRIBUTION* had 7 releases in a few months then it would be time to complain.
you cant compare kernel releases to NT service packs

here it is for the 3rd time

They have already stated they wont be releasing specs or source code for the 3d part. So you wont see any support in mesa.

Binary-only drivers are not a solution, please do not support hardware that doesn't have free drivers. (Speech, not beer)
