Make a bootable floppy with a batch file that XCOPYies (no replace) the critical data from the drive (e.g MYDOCU~1) to some other device.
Power down, power up. It's a little bit like a crapshoot:
If you power up and hear 'the click of death', power down, try again.
If you hear a normal drive startup, you should be ok for a few files, the AUTOEXEC.BAT is going to pull out a few files-- maybe get stuck on a bad sector, mash the [I]gnore button repeatedly to skip over them.
When the drive freezes up again, start over.
I was able to salvage data off a IBM StinkPad laptop that way.
Excellent suggestion. I've always wondered why noone has integrated PAR2 into INFOZIP, BZIP2, etc...
Errors would be detected and recovered automatically while PAR2 files scanned for recovery info. Heck, why not stream recovery packets right into the compression stream -- just like solomon-reed and CDROMs.

Btw we are ALREADY paying a levy on blank CDRs and soon on any other medium that could be used to store music. This "Internet tax" is just a logical progression.

And most importantly, transfer cables to move data between C= and A][ to the x86 PCs via LPT
When Asia decided to go ahead and create their own video disc regional standard (VCD, SVCD) the same arguments were thrown: It's not compatible, you'll be locked out of the world market, yadda yadda...
Today, the majority DVD player now support VCD, SVCD (which have NO DRM whatsoever) and MP3s (bonus). DiVX;-) support is just starting to appear. I betcha by XMAS the 'de facto' player will list DVD,SVCD,VCD,DiVX,WMA,MP3 compatibility (and OGG too hopefully).
Simple marketing: Q: "How do we get all those people with DVD players to spend money on a new one this Xmas?" A: Release a new line with new ATTRACTIVE features.
A nice resource for all that is USB. I found some UBS drivers for DOS that allows mounting Pendrives off a strait msdos boot floppy -- something that was supposed to be impossible.
Ohhh. I thought a 'Passion of Christ' shot got in there accidentally...

(Use the preview button, Luke!)
- You can use it as a fridge magnet. Keep a pry bar around to detach it
- Stick one on a toolbelt, it's strong enough to hold a magnet!
