Doesn't anyone remember when some movies distributed on VHS were passed through "scramblers" that made it near impossible to copy a VHS tape from a VCR to another VCR?
It's called Macrovision and it's still in use today --- a nastier version is in use in DVDs. As for the 'descramblers' they are still around, check at SIMA. ---
From observing napster's behavior with netstat, the first thing the client does in request a server IP at a 'server server'. Its address is (?) hardcoded in the client. If an injunction is served, they'd shutdown that server, effectively stranding *all* closed-source clients with no means of changing the connection address. ... until there is an open-source equiv. of a napster client AND server.
I respectfully disagree. Yes there are 'peons' who will just code parts of the graphics engine, game algorithm etc. HOWEVER, there usually are many classes of people working on a project: Someone has to 'direct' the project, give it the general atmosphere, write the 'script' Someone has to do the artwork (he may not even be a programmer). Same for music and sound effects. No one can just sit down and 'create a world' just like that.
One of the points of R.I.P is that there are no 'stars' in the gaming scene. And that's a crying shame, because they deserve recognition. ---
"(...) I'd like to relate a quote I heard at E3 a few years ago, "We used to call it, 'slapping new make-up on the whore and sending her back out.'" (...) However, I used the quote to illustrate how large software publishers perceived sequels(...)" I wonder if he's talking about Tomb Raider;-) What are we at now? III? IV? I still haven't noticed any improvement in the rendering or gameplay... what's that you say? A movie? Oh that'll help a lot. Look at what it did to Wing Commander. ---
Though self-destructing DVDs are pretty stupid for mainstream purposes, I can see a few uses - mainly for sending large amounts of sensitive data (with a short time delay), so that if the disk was intercepted enroute it would quickly be rendered useless.
The data is still there, it's obscured by an opaque film -- which is coated on the outside of the disc. Just break out your trusty ol' Turtle Wax and buff it off! ---
Maybe JK should watch CNNfn once in a while. A recession IS on the way. How big, I dunno, but the 'slump' will affect every sector, not just hightech or dotCOMs.
'74 recession was under Ford(R)
'82 recession was under Reagan(R)
'90 recession was under Bush Sr.(R)
'01 recession... hmm well... maybe the Republicans are just unlucky... ---

Have you tried 'Virtual Turntables'? It's an MP3 player that's geared towards DJs. It includes a auto-mixer function that starts the next track 1-3 sec before the last one ends. ---
Yep. This is due to Maggie Roswell leaving the show. "According to a reliable source, Mrs. Roswell's characters are actually set to disappear from the show; Mrs. Mitzman Gaven would provide Maude Flanders' voice for Faith Off [BABF06], in which the character would die."

On a semi-related issue, your glass has to be dirty for the bubbles to really kick in. If you have a clean-room grade glass, the CO2 has no particles to fixate on. It's very similar to the crystallization of solutions needing a 'seed' to start. ---

Yep Videoway is going out... They've already started to rent -- you guessed it -- Digital TV set-top boxes. I've seen the results... Hoo boy! Artifact city! I can't possibly imagine over-the-aerial HDTV working with all the ghosting, click-and-pop every time someone turns on a light... and the interference caused by microwaves and blenders in your home. Rabbit ears suck! That's why they invented cable for crissakes. Now they want to go back?!? ---
Personally I think its pretty scary, the TV signals are in the air all around us, how the fsck can they not be public domain? Blame CRTC. For example, it is ILLEGAL (And I don't need a lawyer to know that) to own a non CRTC-approved satellite system (i.e U.S. DirectTV, DishNet). The RCMP can bust down your door, walk out with your gear, and tear the dish off your roof. Blame CRTC, Blame CRTC For preventing me to choose What I'd like to see on my on TV Blame CRTC, Blame CRTC For caving in in to all the whims Of the cable TV monopoly (sung to SP's Blame Canada) ---

You mean, the same way DeCSS is in the public domain, dontcha? ;-)
Meesa thinks napster.com wouldn't agree with that statement.

kNapster: KDE
beNapster, Crapster: BeOS
jNap: Swing GUI Java (really good!)
apster for MacOSX (MacXter?)
Funny, coz I've been tweaking on jNapster for a couple of weeks now and just now does it make it onto the /. radar.
