Unbelievable. I posted this *before* all the other similar comments, and then get modded down for being redundant. I don't know why I ever post a comment.
Yeah, "luckily" I got to the cliche about 75 seconds before another 15 people posted variations on the same damn quote. I give you credit for not feeling obligated to repeat it. Thanks.
I'm well aware that Mac OS X has software RAID capabilties built-in, but they are limited... Why hasn't Apple included a hardware RAID option for availability? In a truly tolerant environment, it seems they would be pushing more redundant systems. Has cost become too much of a factor for them?
We have a semi-customized document management system. He conducts real-time surveillance and documentation of our systems and files them according to the CNFS (CowboyNeal File System.) We've run into a few bugs with the eccentric cataloguing mechanisms (CowboyNeal's pockets) but otherwise it seems to run smoothly.
A while back while working as a consultant, routinely setting up file servers for different companies, I ran into the same problem. I solved it much the same way as proposed by you... (Company Initials/ Ticker + Location + Server Function + Server Number: IMICA-SLASH01, for example.) I found that naming servers after characters may prove to be nice for whomever did it, but in an arena where I would install and leave the poor saps on their own, it always helped tremendously to have a recognizable convention.
I still find that *any* e-screen is more difficult to read on... I have problems focusing on the poor text of most displays, which, for me, interrupt the flow of the book that is easily maintained in print. I don't deny that it works in some forms... I hear on-Palm is good... But it won't be replacing my book collection anytime soon. There's something to be said for the collectability of books, as well. You won't see a "first edition" ebook print available on Ebay in ten years!
I've encountered the same conundrum when faced with backing up my machines... Removable media drives seem to be not that cheap. I've actually acquired a backup 80 GB. ATA hard drive, which I use to copy off any important data (.mp3's, video files, etc.) With the large size of DV files (pre-Final Cut 3,) and the amount of footage I like to archive, I've considered purchasing an external firewire drive: Problem is, not all machines have firewire (like my machine @ work that needs backing up, too!)
I love IBM. They seem like they have their hooks into everything. This is wonderful press for for the linux community, as the NYSE is sacred to a lot of people. I have faith that the International Brotherhood of Machinists will do their best to make everything run smoothly.
Am I missing something here? What's a "patten?" Is that when George C. Scott personally reviews your intellectual property case?
*Now* I understand why we needed to steal Plutonium from the Libyans...

"My name is Werner Brandis. My voice is my (credit card) passport. Verify me."
Enter Ben Kingsley, Robert Redford, stage left.
My WMP for OS X plays pretty much every WMP9 file I can find... And in the rare case that it doesn't, you can always try VLC.
No media, huh? I guess that means we can go back to using our imaginations to visualize the horrors reported back by our soldiers abroad.
On a lighter note, it's nice to see that they will have an easily surveilled method to connect with family from abroad.
Dare we ask how you maintained 20 minutes of vigorous bouncing? The implication seems more profound than mere jogging...

Perhaps you have just as much time to waste...
You're the one cutting into *your* time by replying to my post.
Maybe you're the one that needs to learn how to filter.
Why is this on /. ? This has no significance, other than the fact that Roblimo is apparently very, very, bored. Save our time and don't post this crap.
