Yeah, OK. I see the point. But this thing is going to be at least $20K, if it actually comes out. But, think that in about a year when it comes out $20K should buy you 8-10 dual P4 or Athlons with 512MB each. These would presumably also be much easier to handle. Also, you can get software to actually render renderman files. I dunno, I can't help thinking that the GSCube may be a bit of a white elephant. But it would be cool for rides and stuff, then again - with WireGL around and graphics rendering farms based on VRJuggler is this even worth it ?

  15. RSI In Australia on Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome A Hoax? · · Score: 1

My father was a workers compensation lawyer for the Australian government and worked on RSI cases.
In about 90 or so they got all the medical evidence together and they could say one thing for sure, RSI is not pathalogical, i.e. there is no test that you can do that can show some sort of specific cell damage that corroborates the condition. So the Australian government was able to throw out most of the RSI cases. My dad used to say that it was easy with medical experts on RSI. The were neatly divided into 2 categories, those who 'believed' in RSI and those who didn't, you picked your doctor and got your opinion. Unfortunately the judges also knew this...
But this does not mean it does not exist. It may be something mental. New Scientist a year or so back had a really interesting thing about how it might be a mental problem from rapid activation of certain areas of the brain.
Anyway, my wrists hurt and I should get back to coding ;-)

  16. An American Problem on Payola: Another Brick in the Wall · · Score: 5

    OK, this is a rant.
I've lived in four countries; Germany, US, Sweden and Australia, and I have to say this quite simply. American media is the worst. By far.
The reason is simple, the business of America is business, the research of America is business, the government of America is business and art in America is just business.
On the plus side, Americans are rich and pay is good, at least if you've got a degree and work hard and are a bit lucky. But, it means you have to watch over promoted shit from Hollywood, watch TV that is utterly crap, watch professional sports that are little more than long ads and, if you're silly enough to listen to the radio, listen to virtually uninterupted crap.
Honestly, Americans talk about choice but there is none. I live in a city of about 1.5 million and there is less choice in films here than there was in Australia in a city of 300,000. Try listening to Australian radio - triple J broadcasts on the internet. There is a radio station that plays good new music, rather than Britney spears. And as for TV. Well, cable here has less variety than Australian, Swedish or German free to air.
It's all money, and money produces crap entertainment in the long run. Just like American fast food, fatty, dull and tasteless after a while.

As far as technology goes, a lot of computer technology was adopted before it was useful. In the early 80's when management started just dumping a PC on peoples desks computers were not useful, many people were given a PC, told to be more productive and just left.
Until people learnt to use them, which took years, and until the net came, some 15 years later, how useful were they ?
Even now there is a question as to how much these devices have improved productivity. There have been a number of articles in The Economist and a very good one in the current New Yorker about this.
As for wireless net access, the uses are, as you say, dubious, but one day they will become important. Personally I quite like SMS and am looking forward to the day when I have an integrated PDA, GPS and phone on me. But I accept that until the 3G networks come up it won't be useable.
