With all the whinging out there I'd just like to say that with tech work I've been able to do what I've always wanted, namely live in a few different countries and REALLY find out what they are like.
( BTW, leave the US;-) )
In addition, the thing that used to really suck, namely using touch with people, is no longer valid due to Al Gore's invention.
In short, I really believe that right now people have MORE freedom than they have ever had, and
people in tech jobs have more freedom than virtually anyone else. Now we just have to have the courage to deal with it !

What if you set up something that could use software to decode, which was not actually in the hardware but say, if for instance you had access to the source code ( could that just be possible;-) ) then you could download it onto the device in some form. Would that be illegal ?
The reason to have good speach rec on some sort of device is driving.
I really would like to listen and reply to my email and listen to web pages when I drive to and from work. Even if it was offline.
The only thing better would be if my car drove itself, guess I'll have to wait until someone ports linux to my fuel-injection system....
Don't quote me on this, but I believe the reason that Burger King could not know the name was that there was a burger shop ( according to what I heard ) somewhere around Bondi or in the Eastern suburbs someplace.
However recently a new law came into place that says a large foreign corporation can use that name in Oz.
The reason that not all of them has changed was allegedly some ownership of franchises wrangle.
For a slashdot review I'd say something was missing, namely reports on the BOFs and panels about opensource projects.
Mark my words on this. THE platform of choice for graphics will be Linux with 1-2 years. Graphics requires a few highly skilled highly specialised people to work on projects. I.e. exactly what Open Source can provide.
One of the most interesting things I saw at SIGGRAPH was the the Direct Rendering Infrastructure ( check out source forge ) which should generalize and properly do GL on Linux, as well or better than DirectX.
In addition every man and his dog has an open source scene graph ( check out OpenSG - up on source forge later this week ). What will be really interesting is to see if open source can do leading edge projects successfully.
Linux is going graphical. If you're going to SIGGRAPH (starting Sunday wooopee) have a look around. More and more graphics for Linux. More and more SGI stuff. And finally, wait till the DRI kicks in.
Think about TUX. That's what will happen with Linux games and Linux graphics. Quite seriously, within 2-3 years Linux may well even be the GAMING OS of choice.
Nope. This is wrong, current technology CAN handle voice recognition, at least on PCs. I had a friend ( as a lot of people can say ) that used IBM's stuff all the time for her essays because she had damaged wrists. It worked extremely well, it's just that for most things I'd prefer to have a keyboard and a mouse.
It's just that I can type better than I can speak ! It's a pity that no one actually gives the keyboard credit for doing what it does so well.
The reason cell phone companies are releasing this data is to try and convince us all to get head sets for our phones. This isn't about health, there is, as has been pointed out, a very low risk from cancer from these things. This is about selling accessories.
You said that it was a pet peave, and as that it's fair enough.
Personally, there is no way I'd get a RIO or clone because I don't want to be attatched to my PC ( the same thing is true of digital cameras at the moment ). The main time I use my discman is when I'm travelling, and with a collection of mp3s I can bring half my music collection on the road in a discman pouch. Now that, in my opinion, rocks.
What ??? They didn't ask for the true expert witnesses in this case ? That is any idiot who posts to slashdot. Hell. I demand that a terminal be left open to the committee, slashdot users can post questions ( ooo, it'd be just like an interview ) and the Senate can get the real score.
I don't understand why Americans aren't screaming for more holidays. I was just working in Sweden were the standard is 6 weeks holiday. That's normal. You work better, you feel better. It's much the same across most of the western world, Australia - 4 weeks, Germany - 5 weeks.
I don't understand why this isn't a major issue. If I stay here I'm going to get 4 weeks at least, if I don't what is the point ?
I don't know, can I join a union and campaign for this ? Also, what about paternity pay, again the standards in Sweden is a month or two. In a country supposedly dedicated to 'family values' why not encourage this too ?
This article should not be on slashdot. Just because the judge judged the MS case does not mean we should be interested in him. Hell, he did not even invent the internet like Al Gore. But seriously, I'd really like to see a news site set up using the slashdot engine. Is there one already ? Is anyone interested in setting one up ? Jon Katz, are you listening ? Could be the WELL II.
Spot on. This bullshit of mixing law and politics is crap. How about the Iraqis running a trial of the US and the UK about the sanctions ? They have put CIA people in the arms inspection trials, have blocked every move to get help to people and have caused the deaths of maybe 100 000 people.
I'd like to know what Bjarne Stroustrup has to say about Tim Sweeney's article that was posted on/. a while back and in particular what he thinks about what Tim Sweeney refers to as 'frameworks', where a group of classes can have some extra properties added by someone without access to the original source.
You're a bit out here. First of all the Marshall plan gave more money to Britain and France, who never paid it back, while Germany paid back every cent owed. And let's not forget that beforehand a brief bit of starvation was tried on Germany, have a look at a book called Crimes and Mercies by James Bacque. So don't worry, you poms got a bit of revenge;-)
Personally, I have a lot of sympathy with German laws against scientology. Scientology does do some good, it really does get people dried out, but it also really does people over, a friends brother joined and the whole issue was horrible.
But I really think another dangerous cult, that of Bill and MS, should also probably be banned in Germany. Chairman Bill has inspired his minions into countless evil acts, and even the US government is being forced to investigate this horrible religion and it's icon "the blue screen" before too much more damage is done.....
This is exactly what I was thinking when I read ( or skim-read, it's way too long, does this guy want to be Jon Katz or something ? ).
I work in a VR Haptics company, and it would be great to come up with something as good as the interface of a keyboard and mouse for Quake. Interestingly, this seems to be close to using a chord board and a mouse, which is what a lot of animators and designers use. Somehow we have to get back to just needing two hands, instead of three.....
Exactly. I guess they are going to try the people who took that Iwo Jima picture of Marines raising the flag, which was done days later. Also, the original figures, spouted by Tony Blair and NATO of civilian deaths in Kosovo have been shown to be exagerated by a few hundred percent, so no doubt they'll try those guys too....

If you totally ignore it then it gradually passes into common knowledge.

It matter because of the huge market share they have. Simple. Mind you you do have a point, if a huge bug in Apache appeared would it make MSNBC ?
I hope someone posted this earlier.
