  1. Donation link on Firefox Seeks Full Page Ad in New York Times · · Score: 1

As spreadfirefox.com is dogged by the slashdotting you may want to go direct to the donation page that explains more and allows you to sign up. Basically it's $30 per name you'd like to appear on the advert. I donated $300 (the maximum personal donation) you don't need to enter more names than you actually need.

I don't consider this taking sides.

Does meaning writing an app for Windows only mean they're siding with Microsoft? No!

Neither does making the app for mozilla, but with Mozilla you get cross platform support, so Mac, Linux users can benefit. Even BeOS and OS/2 users can use it! Any platform moz or firefox is available for can benefit.

Of course this is interesting, and shows the talents and ideas that can occur in the world of free/open software.

But Google is a business and they do need to make money and this would be a surefire way for them to lose money (a load of their storage used up, no way to show their adverts, etc) so if anyone seriously used this I can imagine their account disabled.

What I want is google officially creating (or officially blessing the ones that already exist) a gmail notifier app for Mozilla. Technically, using the 3rd party ones that the Mozilla community develop are against their terms of service. They already do an official notifier but it's Windows only - a Mozilla based one would be cross platform.

But it's still good that a browser with long time name recognition is still in the race and it gives people choice, and choice is good if it's standards compliant choice. Many web stats show that Mozilla is above it's Netscape branded cousin now in market share but I still know people who were happy with 7.1, these people preferred a suite and perhaps Netscape use their marketing dollars on this while Mozilla directs its marketing efforts towards the standalone Firefox and Thunderbird.

The Mozilla project if I am not mistaken is funded by Netscape.

Well, since the formation of the Mozilla Foundation in July 2003 then Mozilla was totally independent of Netscape, they did get some cash off them and they still host some of mozilla.org's FTP mirrors (others are hosted at various volunteers) but now mozilla.org are not controlled by any way with Netscape. I'm sure they've done what they can to help Netscape with this release, but the Foundation are concentrating on standalone apps now rather than the Netscape style suite.

If Netscape decides to make a Netscape 8.0 based on Firefox, great for them, but Firefox is now becoming a brand in its own right.

Moving off topic (so stop reading now if that bothers you), there's a lot of extensions for Firefox and Mozilla (and probably other apps - not looked) that do things with Gmail including provide a new notification icon in your toolbar (weblogs.mozillazine.org/doron/), upload contents of a Mozilla, Thunderbird or any other mailer that uses the standard mbox format and probably tools to download Gmail and serve it to a regular mail client.

Currently these methods are unsupported by Google - in fact some violate their terms of service. It'd be good to see Google to make some of these extensions official and make Firefox the number one Gmail browser, I mean MS do this with Hotmail in Outlook Express and as Firefox uses Google as a default search engine then they don't have to worry as much about an IE service pack resetting the browsers default home and search pages to MSN.
