  2. More defensive stance for malware on No Honor Among Malware Purveyors · · Score: 3, Interesting

In trying to clean a laptop yesterday I used Ad-Aware SE. At the end of its scanning process it allows you to select what to remove. When I got to this point one of the malwares took control of Ad-Aware quickly and added itself to the ignore list. I found this quite amazing. Part of the ignore was some of CWS, but there were other things there as well. I was able to scan again and remove the ignores. This new trend is mildly disturbing.

  3. I got call today on Nielsen Will Measure TV ratings Among DVR Users · · Score: 1

About 9 AM today I got a call from Nielsen letting me know I was selected for the TiVo program with them. Asked a few questions and said I was in. One question I have is a technical one. First, does it only count if you watch or does it also count what you record? What if you watch a suggestion? Time limit on ratings, I could watch a recorded show a year later? Lastly, what about when you have multiple tivos?

It does checking on pre-allowed programs. I used a beta version of the PC Satisfaction Trial which the code from this SP is based on. When I upgraded MSN Messenger it saw it as a different progam and asked if I wanted to allow it. I realize there may be still some gaps in this, but isn't quite as bad as it might seem.

  5. Button uses on The Technology Behind Formula One · · Score: 5, Informative

The buttons have a couple of uses. Usually 3-4 are for fuel mixture, how much fuel the engine is given. This determines HP and mileage. Then there is usually a rev limiter button for pit speeds. Other things on the steering wheel can include shifters or kill switches.

There actually is US military close by. There is a navy base in Sigonella which is an airfield as well as stopping point in the Italian docks nearby for some ships.

  7. Sybari Antigen on Virus Creators Sharing More Code · · Score: 1

Sybari maintains a list of what it calls worm viri. If a mail message is found with one of those in it, Antigen simply purges the entire message. It doesn't send a notification to user or sender (spoofed most likely anyway) since it assumes it was an automated process. I don't know why the other Anti-Virus vendors haven't implemented a similar system.

  8. Not there in current SP2 Beta on Microsoft Beta Includes Built-in Virus Scanner · · Score: 2, Informative

I beta tested the PC Satisfaction trial for MS which was an enhanced firewall, antivirus and backup utility. That beta has now ended with no real product in site. The latest drop of XP SP2 has no Anti-Virus in it. It does have an enhanced firewall similar to the PC Sat trial, but not all features. Not sure where they got their info, but it is wrong.

I see all these comments saying you can't make it cheap enough via RAM or Flash and that there aren't HD's small enough. What about this from Cornice. Also mentioned here.

  10. Spam vs. Junk Mail or Telemarketers? on Microsoft Steps Up Anti-Spam Efforts · · Score: 1

While I hate spam as much as the next guy, why does there seem to be so much more effort toward dealing with it over other forced marketing such as junk mail or telemarketers? I realize that some states and soon the fed will have telemarketer no call lists, but it still seems that spam is more hated and worked against? What is it about spam that is so much worse than other advertising/marketing?

Doing a quick google search on Parent Internet Viewer you can come up with hundreds of hits. Also found the manufacturer site http://www.acadtech.com/. The web site appears to have been made with a FrontPage template, doesn't give you a warm fuzzy about the technology and security behind this web app.
