I bought the "Schoolhouse Rock" DVD recently for my kids, and we came across "The Preamble" one. You remember, the one where they sing a song about the preamble to the constitution?
"Weee the people of the United Sta-ates, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice and ensure domestic tranquility-y-y-y.." etc.
It fucking made me cry. I believe that shit with all my heart and the nostalgia combined with the unrivaled abuse that document has taken under the GOP just made me up and weep.
Black-box voting systems have continually been championed by those who would criminally game the system for their own advantage, democracy be damned. They tend to defend their actions with nothing more righteous than cynicism: we do this because hey, everybody does it.
No, everyone DOESN'T do it, and that is no justification in any event. The ends to not justify undermining democracy. Democracy is a large part of what makes societies strong, not weak, and undermining it only serves to strengthen the enemies of it, whether those enemies are foreign or domestic.
So bravo to Maryland. I hope all states follow their example, and that those citizens who are forced to use unverifiable voting machines take a sledgehammer to them instead.
Why is it, after every product release, someone says "is this it? I thought it would be more considering the hype".
What, do you actually fall for the corporate hype?

You can be disappointed without being gullible. I saw the initial "commercial" for the Origami back a few weeks ago, and what THAT showed was actually pretty cool. This, however, is very different from what was shown there but also pretty uninteresting.
I like technology, so even though I have next to no respect for Microsoft I nonetheless was interested. I'm also disappointed that this thing has turned out to be so banal. It has nothing to do with gullibility.
It's called "objectivity". He should be applauded, not condemned, for writing something so balanced. You came to the conclusion that the Japanese are being unnecessarily stubborn regarding Unicode. So did I. I think that says something given the fact that neither of us believe he took a stance on way or the other.
A price can be considered artificially high any time the supplier has more control over the price than the consumer. This can be because of regulatory mechanisms, collusion between manufacturers, vertical monopolies, false scarcity, or any other number of reasons. The current price for any good or service may be the "market price" in the most literal sense of the term, but that does not necessarily imply that that price has not been manipulated in ways that undermine the free market.
Fascinating write up. I had no idea there was such a debate even going on. Excellent work.

Well rails is a very good framework + toolset, but like every other enforcing toolset which tries to cover a lot of ground by automating stuff it has a huge problem, follow the road and you are set, if you cannot follow the road you are screwed.
I have seen this complaint lodged many times, and at first I was concerned about it because of this, but I have yet to actually run into it. Rails is flexible enough that all the conventions it uses are overridable, and if you know of any exceptions to this please let me know, because I am still evaluating it. For example: by default AR assumes your primary key column is named id, but you can override that per-table if you like, or globally via environment.rb:
Similarly, while AR expects plural table names, you can override that with the following:
ActiveRecord::Base.pluralize_table_names = false
So I don't agree with the (overly stated, IMHO) belief that Rails falls on its face when you move outside its conventions. My experience does not match this.
Absolutely. I bought a 21" Sony E500 monitor about 5 years ago. I wanted to get a Sony because I was under the mistaken impression that they made good stuff.
Well, over the past 6-9 months or so that monitor seriously degraded: fuzzy pixels, blacks were no longer black, and most disturbingly there were horizontal red lines going across the screen about every inch.
Very annoying. When I bought that thing I spent more money on a supposedly quality monitor in the hopes that it would last longer. No such luck.
... and if they're getting off on romance books it's probably by themselves, which means they aren't breeding. Therefore romance novels are good for the environment.
The belief that there is some eternal equilibrium that will never shift one way or the other is simply asinine. Cycles exist, yes, but past results are no indicator of future success, as they say. If you change fundamental variables then the cycle will cease repeating itself.
I will not debate you, although you are thoroughly and fundamentally wrong. Instead I will say this: should it come to it I will try and kill you before you kill me, and I will do so with a clear conscience.
You are no lover of liberty, justice, or democracy, and I very thoughtfully and consciously hate all those like you.
Dude, relax. If he's wrong, tell him how. People are immediately turned off by rants like that, and while it may make you feel better very few people outside of those already sympathetic to you will pay attention to what you say.
But hey, 1 billion lemmings can't be wrong, right?
You know, just because something has fulfilled a need for vast numbers of people does not make them lemmings. I've bought stuff of of iTMS, four or five albums now, I think. They work just fine for me. I'm not an audiophile, not really even a musicophile. I just find stuff I like and buy it. If I want to listen to it in my car or CD player I burn it. I don't particularly care about the loss of quality, because for what I use music for -- background for working -- it doesn't bother me.
There are millions of others who are similarly inclined. The DRM matters to some people, not to others. The loss of quality between AAC and CD is subtle enough that most people aren't even aware of it. Do either of these two things, separately or together, make them lemmings? No. It means they found something that they wanted that meets their needs enough that they are willing to pay for it.
Man, I dunno about this guy. Dexter's Lab was ok, but the Clone Wars sucked ASS. Holy crap. There were sooo many times in that thing I would just cringe in embarrassment.
I hope I'm wrong. Dark Crystal was awesome. It's just a big strike against the chances of the sequel being respectful of the originality and imagination of the original.
The #1 theme of the Bush administration has been fear: terrorists, they say, are an existential threat so dire that any and all means used to oppose them are justified.
No.
Various nations have seen and defeated far worse threats than terrorism. Liberty is not a weakness, it is a strength. A robust and fair justice system is not a weakness, it is a strenghth. Democracy is not a weakness, it is a strength. Combined they serve as the absolute best form of not only protecting ourselves from others but protecting ourselves from ourselves.
I wholly reject the notion that the threat posed by "terrorism" is so substantial as to justify any tactic. I am not afraid, and I will not be goaded into fear by the government. I will fight, but I will fight for liberty, justice, and democracy, and will oppose all efforts to undermine them, whether from abroad or at home. I hope those of like mind throughout the civilized world will do similarly.
Why do people feel the need to broadcast their sexuality in a game on the internet? I think that for many gay people, their sexuality is such a focus in their lives that they forget nobody else really gives a shit and nobody else really wants to hear their whining.
s/gay/hetero/g
Two things you should know about human nature: (a) people like to talk about themselves, and (b) sexuality is a primary driving force behind all human behavior, whether hetero, gay, tranny, or whatever. People like to talk about themselves and since sexuality is such an important part of their self they like to talk about it. Asking people to do anything different is just ridiculous, not to mention unfair.
And since when does one have the right to play LBBT characters in a role playing game for heaven's sake? If you don't like the rules, then leave.
I abhor this line of reasoning whenever I see because it is nothing more than abject cowardice. How about if instead of quietly acquiescing whenever we see injustices occur we fight to get them righted? The only effects of the "If you don't like it, leave" mentality are to leave justice stranded, forgotten and denigrated.
There is a line between criticism and intimidation. Given the fascist tendencies of the modern conservative movement this has more characteristics of the latter than the former.
But don't worry. I'm sure some Democrat somewhere at some point did something similar, which justifies, of course, anything.
Having said that this, at least, is hopeful:
News of the campaign prompted former Republican congressman James Rogan, who helped lead impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton in the U.S. House of Representatives, to resign from the group's advisory board.
If warrants were properly attained under the law, no.
Could the President be impeached for taking improper action?
Yes. Presidents can be impeached for any reason Congress deems appropriate.
Does the President have the Constitutional authority to grant pardons for unlawful search and seizure to parties that may have broken Federal or local laws?
Yes, obviously.
So the real question, O Name-Caller, is do you believe A) that the "War on Terror" rises to the level of "Wartime", or B) that President Bush has committed High Crimes and Misdemeanors and should be removed from office?
No, I do not believe the "War on Terror" rises to the level of wartime. This nation has faced and seen defeated numerous, far more serious threats than turban wearing religious zealots. Bush broke the law, and his oath of office. The continual after-the-fact justifications may fly with the media elites, but they do not fly with me. Al Qaeda may be dangerous, but not nearly so dangerous as to require an imperial presidency, nor do I think the implication that we are weaker with our system of checks and balances is either correct, defensible, and certainly is not wise.
Oh, and by the way: your air of superior smugness is no less of an ad hominem than any other, however implied it may be.
BTW: I put you on my foe list because you're a dick.
