  1. NetBeans on Comparing Visual Studio and Eclipse · · Score: 4, Interesting

    Have you tried NetBeans?

I find it is rapidly over taking VS.Net and Eclipse with things like its improved intelli-sense, built in profiler, tools for building handheld apps and many more improvements.

  3. Re:Privacy - But is it open source? on Google Desktop Now on Linux · · Score: 1

Not really. I've used Google Desktop on Windows and it gives you the option to turn off sending stuff to Google servers.

The bigger issue for me is if it includes the source so I can check it doesn't "phone home". Plus it would be easy to extend of course.

So, Google, any chance of releasing the source code? GPL even?

    Okay WTF is going on?

I understand that these kind of small Linux vendors need to make money, but why are they signing up to this?

I can only think its cold hard cash talking. Both Linspire and Xandros have just signed their death warrants (Novell at least has other options).

Begun the Microsoft (Clone) wars has.

  5. Re:Interesting comment... on Paul McCartney On Music In the Digital World · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've read that essay a number of times and they way I see it the band has 3 choices:

    - Get a good music lawyer before signing anything. If the record company refuses to deal with you once you've "lawyered up" then walk away
    - Try distributing and marketing your stuff yourself. Internet. Radio. CD's. Whatever. Do the hard yards yourself. If you are good enough it will be heard yeah?
    - Accept the deal. Make no money, but get famous/chicks/To tour.

Seems like most bands/musicians prefer option 3.

And worse it seems most listeners don't care which of the 3 options the muso chooses in the first place.

And the saddest thing of all? There are so many bands and musicians out there that the marketing *IS* 99% of the costs. Why else is do we mainly download and P2P top 40 crap.

Sorry.. bad choice of words... Promoting was not what I meant. What if the US Media and IP cartels are direct preventing imports of Chinese (and other countries) IP and art? I'm sure a country the size of China could of produced its own operating system or at least a few best sellers in the book or music charts?

Let me speak plainly - US import tariffs both explicit and implicit are hypocritical.

  11. What about chinas IP and Art? on China Slams US Piracy Complaint · · Score: 2, Informative

What about Chinas IP/Cultural penetration in the US? Where's the Chinese equivalent of Britney? What about the Chinese authors in the NY times best sellers list? They account for a large proportion of the world population.

Perhaps China feels that the Cartel media structures of the US are not fairly promoting foreign IP and art?

  12. I download albums on RIAA Caught in Tough Legal Situation · · Score: 4, Interesting

Damn I already moded this discussion, but I feel I need to post....

I prefer to download whole albums, either legally or through dubious means (*cough* allofmp3 *cough*). I think it gives a better indication of the artist and the art they perform.

I hear a song I like via a friend or the radio (I'm on Oz so we have tripleJ/classicFm/Digg ... Google if you dont know what I mean). Almost always the album is similar in quality to the single and often I hear songs I love that just would get airplay EVER.

I would happily pay for all my music album downloads if I could choose my bit rate, the files were DRM free and the price was reasonable lower than the cost of a CD (*cough* allofmp3 *cough*).

  13. Re:Crap. Any idea how long this will take? on Russia Agrees To Shut Down AllOfMP3.com · · Score: 1

Its still working at the moment, but I suggest you clear your balances quickly.

As it happens I've decided to switch back to CD's. I like the nice packaging. I don't buy many RIAA recordings anyway - there is plenty of quality independent music out there. Plus I can rip them at a reasonable bit rate and format of my choice.

The only thing that annoys me about CD's is that its not easy to "try before you buy". Nothing worse that spending your hard earned dollars on a CD only to realise that its total crap. I wonder what the law says about returning CD's? You can walk out of a movie and get a refund right?

Well maybe 60% on my new system. Well maybe not every FLASH site, but it seems to be most of them. And why does IE not have this issue? Will someone please help me? Mozilla? Linus? CmdrTaco?

  15. Re:A step in the right direction on The Troubles With the Yahool Mail Beta · · Score: 2, Insightful

Because of course we all want to be using Outlook right??!!

Gmail has real innovation in an email client. Discussion topics are grouped, labels are better than folders and "archive and search" has changed the way I file emails - who needs an elaborate outlook style folder structures, just archive and search ;-)

I'm so used to Gmail for my personal email that I have installed Google desktop search at work (where we HAVE to use outlook) just so I can properly search my emails and I know longer have to spend all that time filing emails away in folders.
