Try Paris to Barcelona instead (7h25), for example, and tell us if taking the plane is really worth it, considering all the security circus you've got to live with when taking planes and the fact that trains will bring you directly to near the center of each city.

I don't know for Eben Moglen, but I can say for sure that RMS didn't appreciate when we recorded and streamed a conference of him with proprietary software and codecs (RealServer+RealVideo).

Not only did we re-encode the video into an open format, but we went so far as to develop an entirely Free conferences/courses recording and streaming software (based on GStreamer) as a result.

Unfortunately the original website is down, but the latest source code is currently available from http://depot.univ-nc.nc/sources/ for those who might be interested.

So please, enjoy the show, it's Free Software so you're very very welcome to build on it, sell it and sell support and consulting.

As a clarification I must add that I "ask" people who redistribute modified "Official" binaries to not label them "Official", because they have been modified. This is the only "restriction" although it's not really one because I "ask" but people are Free to do otherwise. Really it's only a matter of respect : if you don't shit on your user base, they won't shit on you.

For both (1) and (2) YOU could do it, YOU don't, but YOU could.

Do you have ever read the GNU GPL ???

    Where's the problem ?

  11. This worked fine for me with PyKota and other printing utilities that I'm selling as binaries for a number of years now from http://www.pykota.com/

All my software is Free Software licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL, and is freely available to all from subversion. People wanting tarballs or Debian packages can pay.

Additionally I used to sell support contracts and consulting work, but I had to stop when moving to another part of the world.

So yes it's a model which works. I don't have to rely on this for living though, since I've got an unrelated full time job, but if you can dedicate a lot of time to this and to make your software well known and respected (so I'm not talking about spam), you'll be able to get some profits with this model.

Most of what you say I perfectly agree with, in particular audio is the most important. However wrt video I disagree with you : in "some" circumstances, and whatever the subject, having a video is very important.

It seems you and me have done the same sort of work (see my other comment), and from my experience, students who take courses 8 hours a day each day of the week LOVE the video. We did a study and polled them about this very subject : they "feel" teachers consider them more (of course in reality most teachers don't care, but it's not my problem), and the course is less boring than an audio+slides (or shared wb) only setup, so their results "might" (unverified) be improved.

If they only follow one audio only course from time to time, you're right, but for an entirely remote learning year, having the video is a plus.
