the announcement my professor made show'ed she wasnt terribly happy with this. In addition every student in the class recieved a copy of windows NT professional and Visual Studio. This really stank for me, as a linux user, it meant that I had to work in the computer labs on campus.

In addition to the cut throat competition style bribes to the students, they also gave the computer department thousands and thousands of dollars that year. of course, one third of the sun machines were then replaced with dells...

the article is not over-reacting. How can we stop this? I think universities are lured by money, but are even more scared of losing cred. We as a developer community should loudly and publicly question the academic virtue of schools who whore themselves and their students out like this.

think that piracy is justifiable. Theft is
theft. I'd be pretty hopping mad if someone
'pirated' my GPL'ed source and stuck it into
    their closed project.

On the other hand pirates and warez pups have
always been part of the topology of closed
source software. And as many have already
pointed out more eloquently then myself, it
almost never actually hurts sales. As i under
stood the way of things, was that pirates were
beneath the notice of law enforcement, not being
    worth the effort to track.

So why these busts? It could be that the DOD is
bored, or someone felt the need to fire up
carnivore. Maybe they're just misguided, and
think that they're preventing a real crime. Maybe
the sagging economy is making software makers
    bitch harder. who can say?

i think we should consider before condoning piracy. on the otherhand i think its stupid
to spend tax money on busting them.

Other theories say simple life form inside of comets in deep space, and were dispersed on the earth as we passed through its path. Now how many planets pass through comet trajectories? how often? how many comets produce life?

Look i am not advocating or denying these theories, I'm just saying that we cant begin to guess yet.

I am looking forward to exploring OSX since it seems to have addressed these issues, and has the makings for a truely powerful and innovative operating system. It seemed that a merging of the power of bsd and the evolved GUI of mac OS would solve a lot of problems of both. Of course they only accomplished that by intergrating unix... which isnt an OS...
