    maybe the GP can get a free ride because would-be theives will start to avoid androids because of the activation lock, and he doesn't have to lock his phone specifically. this activation lock thing is just a deterrent, like if you put explosives in there to blow their fingers off. you still lose your phone.

    What is up with that new laptop? It has like almost no ports! I have a rMBP and even with the two USB ports and the two Thunderbold ports I still need to use a USB hub so I can plug in all of the devices I need to use with my rMBP! Booooo! BOOOOOO! We need more ports, not less!

    If you need more ports then get a mbp, which they also updated today.

    dont think of ROI in a negative context here. the researchers are invested in learning more about the world and sharing this knowledge and this is what they want. they're not looking to "monetize it". a better question is, why would somebody pay $200k to solve this problem?

    In CA there's Prop 13 which made it so taxes were assessed on the purchase price, regardless of current value. It bankrupted the state.

    Not to be pedantic, you don't pay taxes for owning your car, just for using your car. There's no requirement to register it as long as you keep it off the roads. This is for US, at least.

    It's not terrorism because the purpose of terrorism is to affect political change through fear and violence. There was no video threat or claiming of responsibility, so no political motivation, so no terrorism.

    the problem with a PC on a TV is that the PC game user interface is designed for an individual with a high-rez screen and sitting 24" away. not for people in front of comparatively low-rez screens and sitting 8 feet away. so I find PC games in the living room unusable.

    Not to mention the weirdness of having the keyboard/mouse set up when sitting on the couch.

    I finally learned the difference between Yuan and Renminbi. RMB is a measure of value, like silver (or sterling), and CNY is a unit of measurement like dollars.

    consoles are superior to desktops because you get the living room "lean back" experience and a console is 10x cheaper than a bleeding edge gaming rig.

    If the kids can also keep their EU citizenship, it is worth it. I don't think there are any tax implications, maybe there are implications if you are a US citizen earning money overseas.

    I am a US citizen by birth. A couple years ago I applied for and was granted irish citizenship cuz they have this program where if your grandparents are from Ireland then you can get citizenship. This way I got an EU passport, and if shit hits the fan in US I can go anywhere in Europe and get a job.

    look at it this way... if the repubs are pushing a bill, then it must be for a nefarious purpose even if it seems logical on its face. once you realize this and start looking at people's motivations, you'll understand. follow the money!

    EPA's work has always been based on publically available rigorous science. the repubs are just raising an issue to squeeze in something else.
