This is rather disturbing I think. But like drug testing and warrentless searches there will be this effect:
"I have nothing to hide, go ahead test me. Or, sure officer, you can look in my trunk. Or, I am not a psycho I don't mind that test."
This is another example of the governments continual assult on our Bill of Rights, in particular, our right to privacy.
Personally I always give a cop a hard time when it comes to searches. I got pulled over for a missing tail-light once and the cop, for some reason, was not content to just write me a ticket. He asked if he could look inside my trunk. I said no. He said he could get a warrent and I said go ahead. he then locked me into his car ( I am not arrested yet ) and about 1 hour later he got his warrent and he opened my trunk. There was the tail-light! It was blinking away in the trunk. It had fallin in. He searched my trunk and the rest of the car and found nothing. ( There WAS NOTHING ) The scolded me for not letting him look earlier and let me go with no ticket or anything.
I do the same when they want to look around my apartment.
I WOULD ALSO DO THE SAME IF YOU ARE FORCED TO TAKE THIS STUPID TEST.
This will NOT go away if only 1 or 2 people refuse the test. A majority of folks have to refuse it.
Most comments on this issue are about how "dumb and stupid" she is. This is an addiction like heroin or crack. She got into trouble and found a way out.
THIS TIME.
Thats all fine and good with me as I don't like online casinos and, for that matter, I don't like monopoly financial organizations.
What she does need to do now, though, is get some psychiatric help for her gambling addiction.
Stop calling her "stupid" because in fact she ( or her lawyer anyway ) is very very smart.
Thats my two cents.

Linux become more competitive -- Perhaps not
on
$200 Linux PCs

My only real worry is that a sub 200 dollar PC running Linux is going to seem like buying a Hyundae in stead of a Toyota...
My point being many people really do feel that you "get what you pay for". I know many people who would feel that spending 900 bucks for a machine with Windows on it is going to be 700 dollars better than the linux box.
It probably won't be true, but that does not stop them from feeling it to be true.
We can't "Sell" Linux to the masses simply because it is free. There has to be some kind of perceived value. I know Linux wins on technical merits but what about the masses?
Microsoft actually gets "perceived value" with their little "Certificates of Athenticity" and Registration cards etc.
My worry is someone is going to walk into a warehouse type computer store, first baited by the 200 dollar PC, then switch to the 500 plus dollar one because it has a CD-ROM and Windows 98 on it.
Considering that the beta of Civilization Call to Power was a tarball, I bet their installer would work on ALL linux distributions. If the installer uses RPM or something then all the Redhat styled ones.
I would hope they would stick to the tarball format. Then they will have a cool installer for other unix flavors as well.
As far as differing file trees go, you could have detection built in much like the Make programs do for Unix detection.
"In order to port IE over to Linux, you will be required to purchase MS-Windows, WinAPI for Linux. IE is free, however the MS WinAPI is a bargain at $59.95"
This is because I really am worried still that microsoft is databasing stuff about me and what is on my server. I would rather just "one way" FTP the stuff I need then install it on my machine much like the Redhat errata site is right now.
At work I have to use NT on my desktop. I ran the task manager and decided to try and kill some tasks. Heh, I could not kill the smss.exe. Gee, I wonder what that is for?
I bet many companies fear the penguin because they will lose the ability to snoop on you, much they way WinozeUpdate probably does as well.
A lot of us really don't like Microsoft and that is the way it is here on Slashdot. If it bothers you sooooo much, plug in "I love Bill Gates" into the msn search engine and enjoy.
Basically we are all broke and the smell of money, even a little, will blind us to these contracts.
A good friend of mine up in Seattle knows Kim Thayil from Soungarten. Kim came by his house and my friend quipped, "Boy, it must be nice to have all that money." Kim answered, "I should have a bunch of money but I am not sure what the hell happened."
Somehow, in America, we simply do not support the arts.
In Germany it was different. Bands got paid enough that a friend of mine after leaving the army to play music full time, he now owns a house and and just lives there.
Anyway most of us play just because we like it. ( Or for girls *wink* )
CORL has been fairly steady at this price too. I am sure the stock would go up upon the distribution release. It probably won't jump like an IPO but I expect 400% rise over time. That is only about 20 bucks a share.
More interesting is what microsofts reaction to all of this will be. Perhaps they will target distributions rather than Linux as a whole with FUD. Or, as I think, what if they bought into a distribution? That way they could play both sides of the fence.
I bet so......
SMP is very much on the forfront of kernel development.
I honestly expect Linux to out perform NUMA within the year 2001.
I am smiling ear to ear.
Linux running the "Worlds Fastest Super Computer".
It seems to me that if it is good enough for the scientists at Los Alamos then ANY THING that Microsoft says about Linux will seem like FUD.
Even if some of what they say it is true.
Cray used to be well established as the super computer company. I remember no MS FUD about Cray. I wonder what they will say about this.

Once tne browser wars are over:
"In order to port IE over to Linux, you will be required to purchase MS-Windows, WinAPI for Linux.
IE is free, however the MS WinAPI is a bargain at $59.95"
I am not too worried.
I am looking forward to Mozilla's new browser. I have used Milestone 9 and I like it. It looks and feels good.
I am also hoping that nekko can be incorporated into Gnome and KDE's file managers.
M$'s browser will only get LESS standards compliant if it is the only one left and that IS something to fear.
David Hasselhof as Mulder, Pamela Anderson Lee as Scully..

Itanium really is a stupid name for a chip. I think Merced was fine.
Now Sledgehammer is a great name. And instead of "Start me Up" by the Stones they could advertise with something by Motorhead! *wink*
I seriously doubt that many MIT students will base their doctorates on projects with Microsoft.
The ones that do are in it for the money alone and I am glad they won't be part of the mainstream scientific world anyway.

This actually exists....
Get ready!
Well, they are going to have to start selling ads somehow I suspect. How are they going to pay off their startup capital?
I really like the way they have side by side comparisons of the same object in Visible Light, X-Ray, Radio Telescope Images etc.
Lets point it at some black hole candidates!
I guess my last post could also be considered flamebait.
I am just a Master-flame-bator I guess..

"Would Linux exists today et al."
Perhaps not. But instead of Hurd we would probably be running BSD. And what is wrong with that?
I agree. It seems to me that NFS would be the way to go here.
Free, fairly easy to implement.
You will have to plan a boot-up sequence for all your machines if you want to automount these file-systems.
A better plan is to run a script by hand after all the machines are started up. Timing is everything!
Make sure you don't have video cameras and microphones in there...
_NSAKEY and Back Orifice and all that stuff would certainly make your lives less private.
I clicked on this article and then wondered why there was nothing about Linux then I realized..
It's not "Linux Oceans on Europa" rather:
LIQIUD Oceans on Europa.
Time for a new monitor.
I know for a fact that if Sony came to us with a contract wew would probably sign our lives away on the spot.
Making music in America simply does not pay very good at all. It is not just the record companies, but the club owners, promoters etc.
Even the NXNW event in Portland, Oregon which is drawing mp3.com's CEO as well as other music and record company people requires the bands to PAY THEM to perform for nothing.
Basically we are all broke and the smell of money, even a little, will blind us to these contracts.

Of course it requires windows! That way for each beta tester they get that is one LESS windows user out there.
It's brilliant!
Now lets see we need about 80 million beta testers......
