There are plenty of decent hardware configurations that the game pukes on. Your implication that people who are having problems with the game have substandard hardware only encourages game companies to release less and less compatable games. You'll change your story when it happens to you.
"The fact that your CD player can't read the CD comes as no surprise since there are, oh, 2000 different CD mechanisms, plus or minus 500, that a software designer has to plan for when releasing a PC title. "
Normally a gaming company doesn't have to plan for 2000 different CD mechanisms. This developer screwed themselves by going with a bad implementation of safedisc. It isn't the architectures fault. They could have used other means of copy protections (that is equally as easily broken as safedisc) that wouldn't interefere with a high percentage of drives.
Hrm...lets think about that for a second.
The PSX certainly came with the same amount of bootsrap code (relatively) that the Dreamcast did.
It also had the psx's os on every game disk, just like the dreamcast games. The only difference was people could develop either to Sega's api, or WinCE.
"The X-Box is traditionally compared to current-generation consoles, such as the PS2 and Dreamcast. These comparisons are invalid, for two reasons. First, considering the release date, the X-Box must be compared to the next generation (NCube etc). "
You are the only one who seems to think so. Most people (console gamers, and console reporters) consider the DC to be in the same generation as the psx. (or at least in an inbetween generation) and the xbox, the ps2, and the GC to be the same generation. Certainly if you were to consider the gc and the xbox to be in the next, one would have expected much more powerful boxes in comparison to the ps2.
"At the moment, there is a lot of stuff that don't exist yet, UMA, frex, which need to be emulated."
If it doesn't exist yet how could they possibly be telling the truth about their planned release date? When did they start producing final hardware? today?
SSX is awesome.
So is sky oddysee.
Gauntlet Dark legends is also cool.
I am also getting a gamecube, but I think you're a troll as far as the ps2 goes.
Derivative works are allowed, provided their source code is freely available. However, these works are discouraged. MAME is a continuously-evolving project. It is in your best interests to submit your contributions to the MAME development team, so they may be integrated into the main distribution.
There are some specific modifications to the source code which go against the spirit of the project. They are NOT considered a derivative work, and distribution of executables containing them is strictly forbidden. Such modifications include, but are not limited to:
enabling games that are disabled
changing the ROM verification commands so that they report missing games
removing the startup information screens
If you make a derivative work, you are not allowed to call it MAME. You must use a different name to make clear that it is a MAME derivative, not an official distribution from the MAME team. Simply calling it MAME followed or preceded by a punctuation mark (e.g. MAME+) is not sufficient. The name must be clearly distinct (e.g. REMAME). The version number must also match the number of the official MAME version from which you derived your version.

I know I'm an old fart, but sometimes I just get more enjoyment out of roguelikes than the latest version of diablo with better graphics and less gameplay.

I wonder if it is time for a simpler game site....

One where you can't get screenshots directly from the site, or movies. They don't have Schnazeriffic graphics. But maybe some colored frames and text. Only link to pictures on the manufacturers web sites, etc.
You would keep your bandwidth relatively low, which in turn would keep cost low.
The only problem I see would be industry contacts.
...most often the people touting the 'Nintendo is kiddie' line are teenagers who are trying to be cool and grown up.
Once you get into the 20-somethings you run into more gamers who realize that a game is fun if it is fun and don't care what age group the game was marketed towards. We play Zelda right alongside Quake, Mario Bros right next to Baldur's Gate.
My views are in no way scientific, just observations over time on various gaming boards.
It has many players. Good ratings, and is considered by the gaming media to be a sucessful online console game.

That and of course to go with IE would be to bed down with their competitor.

Care to provide a link to that information.

Did the PS2 ever crash during public demos?
Did the GC ever...
I'm sure you get my point.
I also think that with their near release date, they should have been showing final hardware.

You wonder if "such things are to be expected" Why the GC didn't crash this year, and why the ps2 didn't crash last year.

This would lead me to believe they should have been showing their final hardware at E3.
Since they weren't, I can only assume there will be a shortage just like ths ps2, and/or their launch date is gonna get moved back.
