You can still end up with employee dissatisfaction. The guy making 34k now makes 70k. The guy making 70k still makes the same. You will end up with employees who hate the job, but will just stay for the money. Hopefully for him the benefits will outweigh the possible negatives.
Or to get the promotion... I am in a situation now where I think I am not taken seriously, it might come down to that paper. Why promote person A with an associates degree when you can promote person B with a masters. If everything else is equal, the degree could tip the scale.
I also find it funny you mention the printing press... textbook prices are insane. I would say if schools really cared about education they would do something about it. Two hundred dollars for a book I can't buy used and can't sell back... what a joke.
Well, much of school is in the lecture format. If you are in a lecture with hundreds or tens it does not really matter. So video tape lectures put them online... I can see how it could be a replacement.
The trailers were still sold off for a fraction of what they cost. So sure, buy one for a tenth of the cost, refurbished it, and it is usable. There probably is not much resale in these tents...
I am not sure how well they work, but I have seen power strips where they will not supply power if the load is too low. They are supposed to not allow vampire draws.
When I was single my power bill was next to nothing. I can't even get people to turn lights off now. It's sad the hoops that need to be jumped through to keep vampire devices from drawing power. It is probably not worth it, but after the dishwasher finishes the leds stay on, I hit cancel to turn them off. I just hate to see waste really.
With no data I think it is true for some things. Newer gas furnaces are more efficient, but far more complex. Growing up I do not remember a single appliance needing replaced. Newer cars are more reliable I am sure, but try to figure out how to repair a prius...
Past performance does not mean it will always get that high of a return. In the long run mutual funds almost never beat the market. Especially once you add in the fees.
For instance I have several e-mail accounts, you need them if you want to sign up or buy anything online. I never use them to correspond though, and might only log in every couple of months. So I could say I don't use e-mail.
My thinking as well. First any system should have multiple failsafes. The copilot failed, now what? Seems there should be a way to always be in contact with ground control even if you are outside the cockpit. Maybe in the rear of the plane? Pilot goes crazy whatever, he probably can not run to the rear disable coms, run back. Give ability for someone, ground control, someone in the back to send an alarm, or be able to override the pilot, which could put the plane in autopilot mode for a period of time. At the very least it seems there could be more ways to contact ground control, send an alarm, record to the black box. Why have everything in one place. At the very least we would have a better idea of what happened if something did go wrong.
What is the average heating bill? 1000 a year? If it is usually cool... wouldn't you just need to vent in air to cool a server farm? They are going to save more than a 1000 a year in cooling by doing this... ?
I wonder how they will circulate the heat as well. I have a wood stove on the lower level, with a door open and a fan, the upstairs still ends up being 20 degrees cooler.
I don't really think the phones themselves are the problem, I mean who really wants to socialize on the public bus etc.? I think the problem is when people do not pay attention to where they are going while on the phone and run into other people, or are up to order their food and don't realize it is their turn, or where they have to check their phone 40 times while at a meal. Just have some manners and it will not seem like such a big problem.
I have seen this even in the 90's on the Internet, I can only imagine it has grown. Much of it is seeking attention whether the people doing the harm realize it or not. You are going to be less likely to do it if nobody is there to notice. With the online world you have all sorts of people in the same mindset, and people to get attention from.
If you want to go one step below a full swat raid, have the raid team deploy, walk up to the house, if they hear screaming, shooting, etc, go in. If not, knock on the door. Hide behind your armored vehicle. Come up with a new strategy.
Tell that to the groundhogs...

put their faith in cryogenics instead of religion, it would make some real progress. You are dead either way, why care if people freeze themselves?
I will not have networked computers on this ship!

I have a garden and cut firewood... I would have chickens if I could. There is nothing wrong with being in control of your needs and expenses.

What gives 15%?
Is this a reply to me? If so I do not get it.

Devils... say terrorists try and take over... pilots try and land fast... doors unlock?

I sure would like to know the specifies. I would hope they thought out the details. Seems like more possible problems than it is worth.
I bet afterward the fema trailers are pretty much trash. I would expect the same from these things. They do not look all that durable.
