A very slow start; they've been around for a few years already, and I don't remember the list being much smaller when they first started up. _Have_ they added any since they started up?
I was able to install it via Windows Update, but for the life of me, I can't figure out where to START it from. It didn't seem to install anything in my Start menu tree. WTF?
execpt, for course, for that stupid single-button mouse
Interestingly enough, OS X supports the functions of multi-button mice; you just can't buy an Apple-made multi-button mouse. Since this thing doesn't come with one by default, just buy a multi-button USB mouse and use it instead - perfect, no over-priced Apple mouse tax.:)
Okay, looking at the little picture of the innards of the Mac Mini, it seems like it's using a 2.5" laptop-class HD. That would explain the 40 & 80 GB sizes. This also means it's almost certainly a 5400rpm drive. Yuck.
Does anyone know if the HD is user-serviceable/replaceable? I'd love to stick one of those 7200rpm jobbers in there for a nice speed upgrade.
I like the idea of the Mac Mini, but I think I'll wait for a G5 version. Hopefully they'll have gigabit ethernet in there by then. They'll need to figure out some way to get 2 memory sticks in there for a dual-channel G5, though.
This is _definitely_ the machine I'll be recommending to non-technical family and friends from now on, no doubt about it. Good work, Apple! Now let's sit back and watch Apple's marketshare rise...
Here's the thing with dual AMDs right now: wait for nVidia nForce4-based systems to come out. The current ones use the AMD chipset, which forces you to use expensive registered memory. Once the nForce4-based dual proc boards are available, you'll be able to use regular memory, yay!
The big thing I've been waiting for was PCIe and nForce4 - PCIe is here, nForce4 is here (though very limited), and nForce4 dual proc should be along in just a few months, at most (I hope).
Stay the course!
I'd wait for the nForce4 dual proc socket 940 boards, then get a cheap (ie: obsolete) pair of Opterons.
If you want a machine that uses non-registered memory, is dual proc AMD, then you can forget AGP - it's gonna be PCIe-only with nForce4, from what I've read.
Depending on what you're doing, you may want to get a modern Opteron - there's an updated core coming along soon that has SSE3.
Instead, their next gen processor is a 2ghz Pentuim M dothan.
Well, the 765 is, I believe, a 2.1gHz part.
I keep seeing people saying that the Pentium M will form the heart of the upcoming multi-core Pentium 4, and everything official or even semi-official that I've seen says this is not the case. Unfortunately.
I'm an AMD fan, but I've gotta admit to being mightily impressed with the Pentium M design. I'd love a desktop version (add SSE3, on-die memory controller with higher FSB & faster memory interface), and hey, dual core while you're at it), but I don't see Intel moving towards this at all. Weird.
I'm also hoping that IBM goes with an on-die memory controller for the PowerPC FX processors; it sure couldn't hurt!
The Amiga philosphy of offloading to other processors is truth
Interestingly, this predated the Amiga. Jay Minor's (father of the Amiga) project prior to the Amiga was the Atari 400/800, which used the same type of hardware design. Certainly the 800 had other design limitations which killed it in the end, but that aspect of it was way ahead of its time. I sure wish Jay was still around today; it'd be fascinating to see what he'd come up with by now.:(
The slim CRTs mentioned should be out by the end of this year. Time will tell in what quantity, and what market (TV, computer display, etc.).
I'm using a 6 year old, deep, non-flat 21" CRT behemoth at home, and I'm still waiting for some type of shallow-depth flat display to come along that doesn't have colour issues or slow response time. Oh, and that's affordable!
I'd _really_ love to reclaim all that deskspace. I'm thinking two 19" flat panel displays, mounted from above (I have a 'Jerker' desk from IKEA that has a shelf mounted above the desktop). More screen real estate, AND more desk real estate by getting them physically off the desktop. But I really need the accurate colour reproduction that I can't get from LCDs.:(
A basic course in Logic should be a first year requirement for every college student, as far as I'm concerned. Actually, it's not that complex a course, and should probably be taught before college.
I think a speed-reading course would be good for students to take in HS or college (I had one in HS). I'm constantly amazed at how slowly most people seem to read. No wonder so many people don't like subtitled movies!
And since we seem to be stuck with it, a course of proper care and maintenance of a Windows-based computer would probably be a great requirement for incoming Freshmen.:(
If it breaks or I lose it I have no functionality.
Yeah...the same as with any other type of phone or technology.
When I'm talking on the phone I cannot look at the screen so it would be a pain in the ass to look up info to relay to the person I'm talking to. Thus, I prefer a separate device
So you use it as a PDA when you're not on the phone. Not everyone has constant phone calls to interrupt their PDAing.
I only take pictures when I'm out somewhere interesting (on vacation, etc) so it seems pointless to have one on a phone that I use all the time.
Okay, so for YOU, that's a good point. But do you think everyone uses their technology the same way you do? Is someone forcing you to buy a 'mega-feature' phone? Diversity in the marketplace is good, not bad.
MP3 player? Seems cool, but again a telephone conversation would interfere with operation.
You seem to constantly be on the phone. I feel sorry for you, but you should realize that not all of us are, and many of us would like one device that does lots of things well enough, rather than carrying around a bunch of specialized devices.
Agreed, but it's not worth the effort to download, that's for sure.
If you want some sci-fi worth downloading, check out the new Battlestar Galactica. It's been playing in the UK for awhile, even though it's not started in the U.S., yet. Good stuff.
I say they're stupid not because of their 'value system,' but because they tend to vote for the people who treat them the worst. Oh, and the unrelenting need they have to force their 'value system' on others doesn't win them any friends in the blue states.
Or you could get your Sonoma-based system and run MenuetOS on it. Boot off a floppy!
Awesome news!
Yes, it'd be great if it were done faster. Volunteering?
If I were a programmer, hell yeah.
Maybe they could free up some moolah to pay someone to take up the Aqua port of OpenOffice, since they're being so generous of late. *sigh*
It's a start.
A very slow start; they've been around for a few years already, and I don't remember the list being much smaller when they first started up. _Have_ they added any since they started up?
Okay, so it only runs once, or does it run every time at reboot, or what?
This is very odd.
I was able to install it via Windows Update, but for the life of me, I can't figure out where to START it from. It didn't seem to install anything in my Start menu tree. WTF?

I just read that PCIe cards should be along by the end of the month. Let's hope that's true.
Uhm, I might be missing something; what other 6800s ARE there besides NV40 and NV45?
Well, I'd wait for the next nVidia rev before buying anything beyond the 6600GT; the 6800 series still has broken hardware video acceleration. :(
My 5900XTV is so overkill for what I need, I'll not bother upgrading until I go PCIe, and only then out of necessity.

Yes, irony is like goldy or bronzy, only made of iron.
Gotta love Blackadder...
Ironic, no. Logical, yes. Inevitable, certainly.
* Logic

you also get a VGA port that produces vivid graphics in 512 colors

Man, now that's kickin' it 01d 5k001!
You may also be interested (or not) in the XgameStation, and the Commodore One. Sorry, too lazy to look up the URLs right now.
Or, if you just wanna do low-level programming, check out menuetos.org.

A popular misconception.
Red staters aren't evil...just stupid.
