Now that IBM have announced they are selling off their OEM storage division to Hitahi this becomes irrelevant. It will not make it to market without funding.
Hmm, have you ever heard of a successful prosecution of an engineer?
I have not. Professional societies exist almost solely for the purpose of sheltering their members from culpability.
That is in all of the world EXCEPT in North America.
Over here the record companies have been choking them because they are recorders, and eveil people might record their own music, even from media that they did not buy.
As usual the problem is not the media or the technology, but American companies (and Sony).
I suggest you talk to Alvarion. They specialize in wireless broadband networking.

OSX on X86 good and bad
on
OS X on x86?
·
· Score: 2
Of course OS/X would be a great opportunity to do doubly duty in the hardware revenge department: Deal Intel a blow and ally with AMD would deliver the message loud and clear to Motorola and Intel.
And also, of course, it would be sheer suicide. Commoditize the Apple interface and there would be nothing unique about a Mac any more.
Ask Corel how well they succeeded on their apps for Linux..
Actually these are going to be API Networks CS20 dual Alpha 21264 machines in 1U cases.
Here is the the API press release:
http://www.apinetworks.com/pressreleases/pr01290 1. shtml
Our local University's Computing & Network Services people became so tired of @HOME they now block all @HOME users accessing the university networks through @HOME Proxy Servers.
Their published policy is pretty harsh on this.
See:
http://ice-atm.ucs.ualberta.ca/htbin/blocknotice ?p x4ar.html
On going to the website I see it says they hold 4 x 36GB disks in 1U.
There is also an "add-on" cabinet that holds another 8 disks, for a total of 12 in 2U.
That works out to 6 disks (216GB) per 1U.
A long shot from the 640GB the headline mentions.
In most countries, the REAL international air courier is DHL.
For example I was in Kenya and Tanzania this summer.
DHL depots on most towns.
Same applies in most places.
DHL is the original and still the best worldwide courier.
UPS outside the USA mainly sucks.
Ever try collecting on an insurance claim for lost or damaged goods with UPS?
I have..It takes months.
The cost of $54,000 per node is not so surprising when you consider they went with Compaq boxes.
Of course as they still have a stranglehold on quad CPU and up Alphas it is less surprising.
A few months ago I noticed/. getting less "controversial" and displaying less editorial "opinion" Now I know it is basically gone. Ther eis no way it can act controversial without VA approval. Also the comments about adverts is likely true. Finally, the content is controlled by those who decide what stories get posted, how much headline and how they are edited. That is content control, and in the hands of the paid employess of VA now. Bye-bye. On to The Register for now I guess..
We sell a line of these, with a quite nice feature set. I will post to slashdot with pictures in the hope it gets published. If they can post pics of stupid penguin cases maybe these too..
Bottom line:
$95
Comes with:
Rackmount case (ATX) with 300W power, ball-bearing temperature controlled fan, 8 drive bays, secondary ball bearing chassis fan, full hardware kit.
I posted a pic of a couple in use at: http://www.harddata.com/images/rackcase.jpg
Here in Canada we have undergone an interesting transformation.
Last year the federal govt. passed the Home Recording Act.
It says ( in simplified words): Copy the CD or whatever as much as you like for personal, non-commercial use. And to provide a return to the musicians they implemented a surcharge on blank media. So, a blank CDR now has a 5.2 cent (Canadian) tax on it. This money is then sent to the musicians organizations to be distributed to the artists.
I am told that the next step is to implement a CDDB that tracks the play usage by song.
Yes, it is NOT perfect. But I think it makes a lot more sense than the old method..
As a user of Quattro Pro (spreadsheet) for years I have been frustrated by the increase in bugs in newer versions, and all I can get is a run-around from your support.
WordPerfect Office2000 is totally full of bugs, even after downloading 2 Service Packs totalling 84MB.
I was finally told by your tech support to uninstall it and install the previous version 8!
In light of this poor quality control why should I buy your Linux product?
Fastest? Not quite Bubba. I am typing this on a commercially released Athlon 700MHz. It has been on the market for a month. And, at the same clockspeeds the Athlon has already demonstrated significantly faster integer performance, and massively better floating point speeds.
Intel will have to hit at least 800MHz to best the Athlon at Integer, and an entirely new design to get back in the floating point game.
Spreading poorly researched rumours like this is dangerous and bordering on slanderous. What ACTUALLY happened is that Cowplands private holding company, which is also publicaly traded, got frozen. NOT Corel.
So why bother porting for Merced when Linux is the biggest selling 64 bit OS already?
And Compaq firmly supports Linux. If you don't believe me go and download the Compaq/Digital Fortran and C compilers for Linux. Known as the best optimized that you can get, they now are fully supported on Linux Alpha.
Actually, let's discard all the conspiracy theories and talk about some facts: 1) There are 5 major fabs making over 90% of the 64 Mbit SDRAM chips. 2) 2 of the 5 closed for about a month to re-tool/install new fabrication equipment. Reason is they are going to a smaller process, and newer equipment. 3) The temporary closures resulted in the supply being reduced by about 20%. 4) The industry tends, when faced with any form of shortage, temporary or otherwise, to panic. 5) The industry likes to feed this panic. Let's say you have an inventory worth $1 Million dollars. Let's say prices go up 50%. Then you make a 50% profit. The new lines go full production by the end of September, then normal market forces of competition will go into effect and prices will drop again. Last note: A 128MB PC100 SDRAM DIMM cost about $260 a year ago. The lowest it got this year was about $90 The price is now where it was at one year ago.
OH well, so flame me: The ONLY reason the consoles and the games exist is because they make money. If everybody rips them off, no new consoles, no new games. If you run emulators and copies of games you are a thief. Get legit, if you like the stuff buy it. Or bugger off and go hang with your crooked buddies in the 'hood.
I live in Canada.
In Edmonton.
All I have to say is I look forward to it.
And yes, Florida may sink..
So?

Mini disks are doing just fine, thank you.
That is in all of the world EXCEPT in North America.

As usual the problem is not the media or the technology, but American companies (and Sony).
For starters "line of sight" is not as far as 45 miles, unless you have some ungodly tall tower!
This will have to be relayed, and some 803.11b repeaters along the way, maybe half a dozen or 10..

If Microsoft still has to run Hotmail on Solaris/Sun boxen and BSD, why would you want to run their email servers?
I think that argument says it all.

I think that the idea of CDROM and MP3 on a portable kind of defeats the purpose.
CDs are too darned big, and not easily erasable.
But a Digital MiniDisc Player with MP3 capability would rock!
Small, runs for hours on a small battery, and each track erasable at will?
I want one!
Alphas have had 64 bit PCI for YEARS now.
And 66MHz PCI this year at 64 bit.
528MB/sec.
