And even command line tools -- old standbys like finger, touch, unzip, mount, and shave -- gave me a permission denied error. What good is a beaver if you can't use it?

OS X has deprecated resource forks in favor of bundles. A bundle is just a folder with a bunch of files in it (one of them is a property list that says what the bundle is). In a sense, it's a resource fork exploded into individual files.
Finder has custom logic to display bundles so they don't look or act like folders (you can still open them as a folder but it takes an extra click);

(And there are people running awk scripts from the 70s, calling me a whippersnapper). With something like rust or go or swift, your code will not compile in 6 months. (which is hilarious in the case of go because it's more 70s than Disco)
