A line in the address that I found confusing (third-to-last paragraph):

  2. That's what eBay *wants* you to think. on E-Bay Going After Offline Deals · · Score: 4
The real purpose of this is to rake in more cash for eBay.

If you've got an item for sale, build your customer base from people who bid on eBay auctions, and sell direct instead of via auction, then guess what? EBay doesn't get any money!

I've heard a few tales recently of sellers who were warned by eBay for listing their websites in their auction listings. They were allowed to link to their own sites, but disallowed from tagging the link with anything that mentioned that merchandise was available for sale on the site. So, "Visit www.junkforsuckers.com for more SUPER-RARE L@@K! trinkets!" at the end of an auction garnered a warning.

It's the same story as a lot of web companies: make things free/cheap/easy at first, to gather a userbase, and then crack down on the rules. Now that eBay is the most popular auction site around, they can afford to do this. I'm not saying that it's wrong either, but it's certainly not about decreasing online fraud -- rather, it's about increasing the bottom line.

Ctrl by the A is nice, but I'll sacrifice that + clicky in a heartbeat if I can have mouse pointer + ergo.

Nope, pointing devices are worsening as well. Windows just keeps them from becoming obsolete.

But nowdays, it seems hard just to find these features in a non-wireless keyboard, especially since Adesso discontinued their NU-Form PC keyboard with mouse button.

I am not at all in favor of censorship; the difference in content between (for your example) the subtitled and dubbed Sailor Moon movies is absolutely shameful.

Dare I say, "no duh!"? That's why I excluded it from the list of anime that are un-bitchworthy.

I'm not a SM fan, but I do enjoy DBZ, and it's pretty shameful that people are *still* bitching and starting petitions to FUNimation about the horrible DBZ dub, when hybrid DVDs are now being released (with rave reviews, I might add).

My point is merely that if the anime is available uncut commercially, it's pretty pathetic to complain about the TV version. Do we do this when mainstream movies get edited for network play? Of course not, we take three steps to Blockbuster.

That being said, however, it is worth noting that it is not necessarily the case that dubbed anime is less faithful to the original text than subtitled anime. [snip whoring]

Well, that's my fault, because I tend to group "subtitled" with "uncut". And I do agree with your essay for the most part; I wouldn't mind watching good dubs for lightweight shows like Ranma or Tenchi (both of which are pretty good dubs). But for something that I truly love, (Shoujo Kakumei Utena, at the moment), I'd be up in arms if it were only available dubbed, no matter how good the dub was.

*sigh*. I'm trying hard to ignore your multiple spelling and grammatical errors. If you don't want to watch censored anime, buy the damn DVDs/subbed VHS!

Tenchi has been out commercially for a while now, so it's not like watching the dub on TV is your only option.

    Gundam W has subbed/uncut DVD.

DBZ is starting to release subbed/uncut DVD.

Sailor Moon...well... I suppose you could bitch about that, but it's not like fansubs are hard to find.

But don't waste your breath on Tenchi.

Heh, the title of this story was to hilarious for me to resist posting. ^_~

I know everyone says, "find an exercise you like!", but really, most exercise bores the hell out of me...I'm not into nature or sports or whatever... but something that did get me doing 30-45 minutes of aerobic exercise every day is Dance Dance Revolution! Heheh, finally, a video game that isn't about sitting on your ass all day! It's totally addictive.

Quick synopsis: you get a 3' x 3' dancing pad, with spots for the 4 directional arrows. A song plays, and little arrows float up the screen, and you have to step on the arrow on the pad in sync with the screen's arrows. Sound easy? It's not. You've got to hit the pad exactly on the beat, and the songs are generally dance songs, so they can be pretty fast. It's extra-challenging if you have no sense of rhythm (like me).

The songs are pretty good too...Konami teamed up with EMI Japan to put real songs on the game. Some familiar ones are Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" and an odd cover/remix of the Village People's "In The Navy".

Anyway, it's out for PSX, and I think Dreamcast now too. It's an import game, with modchip detection, so you'll need a stealth mod, plus the dancing pad of course (waaay cheap, I've seen 'em go for 15 bucks).

Well, good, they should! I see far too many people comporting themselves in a way that they may regret later. Does anyone use Usenet? Ever checked your posting history in Deja? Unless you set your x-noarchive header, everything you've said in a newsgroup is available. I envision data-mining companies forming profile databases just based on usenet posts alone, nevermind all the public messageboards that track your IPs.

It's targets include many younger children and younger consumers who have no idea their online movements are being tracked, and who certainly have the right to pursue individual cultural interests without worring that they're being watched

Ignorance is NO EXCUSE. And I'm sorry, in a perfect world everyone would have the right to do web stuff anonymously, but this just isn't the case. You have to watch your own ass. *snickers* "individual cultural interests", that's rich. "Mom, I'm gonna go steal some CDs from Tower Records, so I can induldge my cultural interests in the latest album, 's ok with you?"

As for whether Metallica has the right to persue users: sure they do! I mean, sure, it's a stupid PR move, but there's nothing patently wrong with persuing people who are ripping you off. They could certainly handle the situation in a more positive way, but that's their choice. To call it an "assault on freedom" is absurd. "Wahhh! I can't distribute pirated music anymore! Metallica is SO MEAN!"

Worship this hard copy! Printers worked day and night, bakkinaday, to make this information available! Um, hello, it's about the information, not the format. I'm sure few authors cared more about the text formatting of their books than about how many people received the author's ideas.

"It is isolating. It is a lonely thing." In contrast, "libraries are places, a community thing."

No, the 'net is a community thing, too. And much more so than a library, IMO. The net certainly provokes more social interaction than scouring for books at a library does.

"behind this ... is an implicit belief [that books] are not going to be replaced, and should not be replaced."

Why not? What is so wrong with downloading a book, and printing a hard copy if you so desire? How is this so different from reading a regular book? Ah, I see. LOC has some political issues with publishers, who are the ones that stand to lose the most if people cease to purchase printed media. Gotcha.

"It is dangerous to promote the illusion that you can get anything you want by sitting in front of a computer screen."

Um, newsflash, it's not an illusion.

  22. I can't be the only female listener! on Mellow Trancey Version · · Score: 4
A few notes on Dragonball Z:

The original show's target audience was in the 12-14 year old male demographic. FUNimation's rape...er, English dub I mean, is what dumbs the show down to 8-year-old level.

It's well worth it to invest in some fansub tapes to see the show in its original form. A few advantages of the fansubbed episodes:

    • Freezer is not an 80-year-old woman with emphysema
    • Kuririn is actually a cool character!
    • Muten Roshi actually is a dirty old man, and cops a feel whenever he can on any of the female characters
    • none of that "the next dimension!" crap; people actually die in the original version
    • Episode 125 (although this will be dubbed soon, Funi will probably screw it up) Chichi forces Son Gokuu and Piccolo to take driving lessons--hysterically funny!
    • Well-written and well-placed background music, none of that idiotic meandering synth music that they put in the dub!

Obviously only a partial list, but if you want to see what you're missing in the dub, check out Chris Psaros' DBZ Uncensored!

Anyway, if you don't feel like waiting for some college kid in Nebraska to get around to mailing you some tapes, you can download episodes at Da Black Goku or at DALnet #dbzleech.
