Anyone who uses any computer (including Mac AND Linux) without anti-virus is asking for what they get..
I have been using Linux without antivirus for more than 13 years now. When looking at risk vs. ROI. It just doesn't make sense to mess with it. A good backup routine is all that one really needs. Then in the extremely rare chance that it does happen, I can always get my data back.
The question now becomes: Can you teach this concept of self discipline to kids or are they born with it? To say that the kid who eats the marshmallow won't be successful is a bit misleading. I know for a fact that I would have eaten the marshmallow at that age. However, I was a 'B' student in school, I have a good career and a loving family. I don't live pay check to pay check. I would say I have succeeded in life.
Many of the old timers here remember when IBM was the monopolistic enemy. Once they started working with the open source community, they turned there image around. Microsoft could do the same... However, I am not holding my breath.
I found selling computers at Best Buy to be great practice.. When someone who has never seen a computer in their life outside of a movie decides they need one (or is told by someone they need one) they come to Best Buy. (and this was '94-'98 when the internet was just coming into its own) Just when you think you've found the bottom of the computer knowledge barrel you find a hole, and a tunnel beneath it leading to the abyss.
That being said: if you're mean to the customer you will not get the sale. Trading off a paycheck vs. teaching monkeys how to throw their feces the *right* way is a good motivator.
TG sales was a temporary job but all of that patience practice was priceless (not to mention the ability to talk to *any* person's level of knowledge).
Living in big cities is pretty much a write off when considering light pollution. However because of urban sprawl, it is a huge problem. Eventually there will be no dark sites left to travel to. I live in a desert town; 40 years ago I could walk out my back door and see the Milky Way quite well. 20 years ago I could see it, but to truly enjoy it required me to drive 20-30 miles out of town. Now, I have to travel to a wilderness location more than 2 hours away. When does it end?
Note to astronomy guys - some pictures of what the milky way looks like with the naked eye would be very appreciated on that wikipedia page.
The panoramic shots are cool, as are the color-enhanced ones. But for all that people talk about the milky way so often, and the fact that I have seen it several times (if faintly) in person, I've always been very vague on whether I was actually seeing it because so few of the common pictures show what it'll actually look like:)
If you look at the section labelled "Age" on the wiki page, you will see a good picture of what the Milky Way looks like to most people not living in a light polluted city.
See the milky way or don't live in the dark. I think 99% of the population would choose one over the other.
The whole point of reducing light pollution doesn't mean living in the dark. Lighting manufactures can create good lights that allow the light to shine down and not up into the sky. Its just getting the 99% of the population to choose these instead.
I take it you've never really taken a good hard look at the crop of politicians currently in office. The 'droids have been running the show for quite some time now....
The sad thing is, this works for either political party!
Like all tools, you need to use it for what its calibration is capible of. For instance, like the i-Phone, my Blackberry has a bubble level app. I would never consider using it as a level in bridge construction, but for haning a picture it works just fine.

At least here in the US, owning a home means you are in the public record. As noted by all the junk mail I receive.
So it's ok to frighten and harass people, as long as they're imbeciles?
Not only is it OK... it should be mandatory!
I for one, welcome our new virtual mice overlords.
I would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids.
World of Wacrarft already uses bitorrent to handle updates. No ISP would block it outright so long as that's the case.
And yet Comcast did exactly that...

Think of the children!
it's = "it is"; its = possessive. E.g., it's flapping its wings.
Otherwise known as "its' grammar."
please, dont SHIT online without knowing enough about what you are going to shit about.
I think you missed the entire point of /.

Exposer to to pseudo-science renders it useless??? Now if we can apply that to Intelligent design?
My dog can understand about 20 words. Nothing new here.
maybe now you bike riding hippy fucks will be easier to see... I mean a few of the bikes missed my grill and all
There fixed that for you...
I stuff my bribes in my underwear.
Like maybe Chernobyl...
This is definitely a candidate... Nothing like a little chlorine in the gene pool.
.. and don't even get me started on some of my high end HTPC cards, thats just talking about my laptop onboard audio.
Linux is still a big fat fail here.
PEBKAC?

You Bastard... Its all your fault!

You are more likely to be bitten by a shark in Oklahoma than you are to be struck by a meteor.
Laugh, its funny!
