  2. JWPce on Useful English-Japanese Handheld Dictionaries? · · Score: 1

I have been studying japanese for about 5 years. I first bought an old Canon Wordtank(IDX-9600) in Den Den Mura (osaka's version of akihabara), and it served me well for my first year or two of study. Then it simply couldnt keep up. Word and Meaning only dictionaries arent great if you want to really learn a language. Some of the recently new dictionaries ($350+) range have awesome dictionaries, various word lookups methods, and great explanations/examples (in japanese/english), a thesaurus, and more, which are all extremely helpful. The 9600 has some explanations, but its poor in comparison to the newer models, like the IDF-4600 , at 45,000yen.

Another alternative is JWPce. I've been using it for about 4-5 years now and its a great quick desktop japanese dictionary. Its real basis is the word processor, which i rarely use, but the dictionary is quick and easy. It runs on a PocketPC as well. I got in the habit of using it before translation sites on the web became popular, so they might be of good use as well. WWWJDIC is very good.

There is a big catch to comparing the 9600 with some of the newer models (most available only in japan), that for a beginner, good luck using it. They are not meant for an int'l user, and are mostly in japanese. Menu's, explanations, etc are mostly in japanese. Once you get to 3rd year or so, you would probably do fine.

But the question of paper vs. electronic dictionary? I dont think you realize how time consuming large paper kanji dictionaries are. And wait til you are translating a 20,000 character essay. There will be kanji you dont know, and it will take hours and hours. Electronic lookup is your best hope.

Suggested Solution: Start off with a cheap Wordtank 9600 (or the like) and JWPce and websites. If you are always in front of a computer somewhere, you dont need to pocket dictionary. If you are travelling through japan, or are not often able to access the internet when you need to lookup something, its worth it. But for your first couple years, basic kanji lookup and word definitions is all you need to know. If you are still studying japanese in 3+ years, you will want/need an upgrade... especially if you travel there. By then, the IDF-4600 will be old and outdated, and you'll want whatever is the newest model.

Good luck learning japanese. If you are in the US, and you want to "touch-and-feel" good japanese dictionaries and cant get to japan, check if you live near a mitsuwa store, which is a huge japanese grocery store. There is usually a japanese only bookstore adjacent to it, which will have some dictionaries to look at. Expect high prices though.

  3. Japanese Carriers fixed this problem on Declaring War on Mobile Phone Spam · · Score: 3, Interesting

Japan has always been a bit ahead of us in the cellphone business, and they have fixed this problem. No longer does your cellphone have ##########@att-mobile.net, but instead its a 20 character random string (ex: d3f65f2ks8iure0kh8b7@docomo.ne.jp), with the option of setting your own alias as well.

This doesnt entirely alievate the problem, but it does increase the time needed for a while loop to hit the entire user base. Supposedly this has helped.

The number of characters might be variable as well (not sure about this), which would increase the time needed even more.

Or maybe this will light a fire for other producers to relook at their designs.

GSM is the globally dominant wireless standard, which offers a strong competitive advantage in the speed at which VoiceStream can bring wireless internet and data services in the marketplace. VoiceStream will expand these services over the next 12 months, adding e-commerce functionality to the personal portal and deploying high-speed packet network data using GPRS.

You can set it all up on their website.

Also, VoiceStream just got bought by Deutsche Telecom (according to a Cust. Srv. Rep i spoke to), hence the little Tmobile icon everywhere..

Maybe (hopefully) this means we'll see some of the much better services in Europe and Japan.

That way, he doesnt get paid in cash, but in credits. You'd write some evaluation to give to a prof, and everyone is happy. Since students arent full time translators, these projects may take a while (for 100 pages of documentation), but the job would get done.

Student translations will never be perfect, but technical documentation is much easier than poetry!

  13. Docomo is doing things right.. almost. on AT&T Could Soon Offer GSM To U.S. Customers · · Score: 1

Being a student studying here in Japan, (and buying a Docomo phone while here) I've quickly learned how Docomo is doing well. They have about 56% of a market that is massive, being that the mobile market, in # of users, in larger than the land line market (consumer side). This may be due to NTT's true monopoly of the land line market (did I mention NTT owns Docomo?) and their use of expensive connection charges that makes using a cell usually cheaper per call. Also, Japan is a culture of fads (Tamaguchi, Piricula aka those tiny little pictures, etc.) which makes the desire for every person to carry a phone, from age twelve to age 70.

As for i-mode, it is currently a "closed garden" but its potential is massive. Its very quick and their micro-payment system is intelligent. For example, the i-mode service is only a few dollars/month, access to CNN daily, is a flat charge of about $4/month, for unlimited usage, but further access are just incrementally put on your bill. The adoption of 3G here (note, in Japan a year before Europe, and some say up to 3 years before the US), will make i-mode usage increase. Also, any company can get an i-mode site since there are little i-mode design firms popping up. But even though Japan's technology is always cutting edge, that is because of a few very large companies design and promote them.

The traditional Japanese company is much slower to accept new technology.

What bothers me the most, is I cant take this kick butt phone home with me! Email messaging (128 char max) for only 1 cent, .898 to be exact, which I use on a daily basis, much more than I ever dial a number! i-mode is also an "always-connected interface... I hated to have to logon/connect to services back home. Just wasted time.
